10.8.5 to El Capitan experience?

I use an iMac late 2009 with 4 MB of Ram.

I need to upgrade in order to use certain programs.

What has been your experience, good or bad, upgrade to El Capitan directly from Mt Lion?

Thank you.

Well, if you need it, then you'll have to, but you may lose use of other older applications.

Depending on exactly which model the end of 2009 you it will take 16 to 32 GB of RAM, I would add a minimum of 4 GB one another if I were you... If I were me I would add another GB!

  • Someone had experience with MS Office 2016 and El Capitan?

I was wondering if anyone has used Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac with OS 10.11.5 for awhile, especially Word?

I just finished setting up a new of the retina end 2015 13 "Macbook Pro.  I used Office 2004 and 2008 on my old Macbook (early 2006, OS 10.6.8).)  I'm a writer, so I use especially Word and Entourage for email. (I kept 2004 because I had a lot of trouble with the Word 2008 .docx files in Snow Leopard and 2004 .doc files compatibility seem to crash less often, although the MS told me that 2004 theoretically will not work with Snow Leopard).

Have been planning to shell out for 2016 Office for Mac, I am dreading out of it because I know from experience that things are never perfectly with any part of the office and there is always a learning curve.  So today I discovered that the resolution of a problem with Apple Care that Word 2008, who immigrated in my new computer with all the rest, can always open old Word files.  So even though I'm assuming that I couldn't go back to work until I installed Office 2016, it seems I can, which is good because I have a date limit.

However, I am uncomfortable to work in Word 2008.  I need to decide whether to risk losing data (I have no reason to believe that Word suddenly remembered how to do automatic recovery or figure out how not to crash OS 10.11.5; probably the contrary) or install Office 2016 and spend a week learning to work in it. Questions:

    1. those who have Office 2008 for Mac tried using Word 2008 for Mac OS 10.11.5? It crash a lot?  Forget all about Auto Recovery etc. ? Or has it been pretty smooth sailing?

2 anyone used Word in OS 10.11.5 a few months, and how it you please?  I know that 2016 Office for Mac had a lot of glitches when it first came out in 2015 for use in El Capitan, although I read that those who have been fixed.  If you use Word a lot, do you think that it works as it is supposed to?

3 how easy or problematic has find you the transition from Word 2008 for Mac-2016 of the word?

Thank you very much in advance for any advice about all this - much appreciated!

I use Office for Mac 2016 and have found no problem - but I'm not a heavy user and did not use from 2008. My main reason for the assignment is to say that you can also get feedback from the Community for Office for Mac forum: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac

  • Sierra of off wreck left by El Capitan OS bug?

El Capitan is buggy as a swamp in this thing (mid-2011 Mac Mini). Got it works just agree with 10.11.6. Are there beta experience with Sierra that suggests that it will be better? If so, should I uninstall first OS - X?

If they do they can not answer you due to the NDA, they signed to join the beta team.

Since I saw no problem with El Capitan, I suggest that you download and install EtreCheck from http://etrecheck.com/

Run it and post the report here. Maybe after reviewing the report of EtreCheck we can help you to fix your Mac.

It is always a good thing to fix a computer before the operating system upgrade.

  • Installation 10.11.6 El Capitan with 10.6.8 Snow Leopard on old Mac Pro 4.2 multiboot?

Looking for savvy here advice...  I have an old Mac Pro 4.2 (cheese grater) that runs Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  It is a wonderful workhorse machine, who served me tirelessly for many years.  It is obviously older and slower, but works very well.  I love 10.6.8.  If Apple ever updated the Mac Pro line (I know, probably not... sigh...), I'll buy one and replace this machine.  Until then, I keep doing this work.

This machine is a beast, has been upgraded with internal hard drives 1 TB three (he also got a couple internal HDs inherited from 750 and 500 MB used for storage).  I have also several external 1-4 to, hip, FW800 drives too.  A host of storage, of course, and should be a lot of options to start on several systems.

I am generally satisfied with 10.6.8 on this machine, although there are obvious limits to that.  I would get one or two operating systems newer on it, pick-and-choose between them according to the needs, but I absolutely want to/need to preserve the ability to initiate and run 10.6.8 systematically as my operating system on the day the day, at least for now.  Maybe I'll warm to one of the others on this machine eventually, but 10.6.8 must remain usable, install a newer OS on other readers may not nerve there.

On a year-and-a-half ago, I took a race to install 10.10.3 Yosemite on one of the internal disks.  This doesn't quite work.  I moved, sniffed Yosemite everywhere, don't really like it a lot and went to restart and him switch back to 10.6.8 for a bit.  Initially, it was impossible (from less than I expected, would be the same old process, I have always used, via system preferences > startup disk).  You can read the details of this experience here and more here if you are interested.  This latest attempt to get Yosemite on this machine was a very negative experience.  Yosemite is still there on an internal HD, but I tried not to boot on it since then.

Now I take another look at this.  What is the engine now, is that I want to update my iPad Mini 3 iOS 10.  But that (update of an iDevice iOS 10) requires iTunes 12.5.1.  And iTunes 12.5.1 requires Mac OS X 10.9.5 or newer - it won't work with 10.6.8.  I'm looking for my options.

Right now, I have three large internal HDs: HD #1, 2 # HD and HD #3, each 1 TB.

HD #1 has 10.10.3 Yosemite on this.  I started from this time and have not resumed since.

HD #2 has 10.6.8 Snow Leopard top.  This is my main operating system and startup of daily drive.

HD #3 is nothing special about it.

Although HD #1's Yosemite about that, I have only started from this disc once and hesitate to go back, at least until I can get a way easy and reliable to restart off HD #2.

I understand that I can also get 10.11.6 El Capitan.  I thought that installing on HD #3.  That sounds like a reasonable to add option, but again, I want to make sure it won't cause problems to switch back to start off HD #2 in Snow Leopard (such as installation of Yosemite on HD #1).

What is the best way for me to go about safely - preserve the option to start easily in 10.6.8 on HD #2?

    Thanks for the help!

If you start or restart now Option (Alt) key and calls the Startup Manager, you should be given the choice at the start of any boot disk OS X on any of the readers.

    Hello Kluggerjo,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community Support from Apple. I know how important it must be able to count on your devices work as expected, and I have a few steps that should help resolve the behaviors you see.

I would recommend to go by resetting your management system (SCM) controller. MSC helps control and regulate different material on your Mac, including Bluetooth systems.  This article will guide you in this process: reset the management system (SCM) controller on your Mac.

If you still experience the issue after the test, you can test the behavior to a test user. This will help us to determine if the problem is systemic or isolated to your user account. This article will guide you in this process: How to test a question in another account on your Mac user

If the behavior is duplicated to the test user, I'd recommend reinstalling El Capitan. This will not delete your data. To reinstall using the recovery mode, take a look at this article: How to reinstall OS X

  • Major Outlook and timing of the problems after the upgrade of the El Capitan

On the advice of the Apple support (phone call) I recently upgraded from Yosemite to El Capitan 10.11.6.

I have many problems. The two largest are (1) stands (2016) Outlook and frequently "must be closed; (2) calendars quickly goes to "not responding" after the launch and shows multiple entries for a single event. Example: I have a class to repeat each week (when I was in Yosemite). Before the upgrade, he showed the event once a week. After the upgrade, it it shows 13452 times the same day. I followed the advice on these topics, but nothing has worked. Similarly the calendars on my iPhone5 freezes as well.

    Hello Steve,.

Thank you for using communities Support from Apple. I have a problem with your MacBook Air use after update is not what you expect. Based on what you said, it seems you can experience some software related issues, and here's how I recommend refine you and resolve these issues:

    1. first of all, try to run a quick with the disk utility tool test, as this can correct simple problems that you encounter. Then restart normally and retest your problems.

Disk utility (El Capitan): a disc repair

    2. use Mode without fail to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, remove files from the system cache, check your startup disk and trying to fix problems if necessary directory. Test mode safe questions, then restart normally and test again.

Try safe mode if your Mac does not end commissioning
Graphics performance limited in recovery of OS X or in safe mode

    3. you can find out if unexpected behavior is related to the user file or a parameter in trying to reproduce the problem to a different user account. This process includes creating a new user account, connect to it and test for the issue.

How to test a question in another account on your Mac.

    See you soon!

  • El Capitan equip Kindle app incompatible software folder

Ten days ago, I updated from a MacBook Pro (Yosemite) 5.5 to a MacBook Pro with El Capitan 10.11.6 9.2. Today, I got the hang of the judgment where the dock is still visible for too long. One application I just used was Kindle for Mac 1.16.0 so I looked in the Applications folder. It seems that El Capitan has moved the Kindle app to an incompatible software folder. I'm still capable of running the Kindle. I can't find any information online with Apple, Amazon, or 3rd - party sites on such popular application why put in this folder, or what it means for the application to be in this folder or how to solve the problem. Anyone had a similar experience?

You must update the application to the latest version. Simply re-download from here where you initially.

  • El Capitan Upgrade - not enough of space for the upgrade to Photos

HI guys.  I just upgraded my MB of 2013 at El Capitan Air, and I'm having an issue update to iPhoto to Photos.  We have the iPhoto on an external hard drive library.  When I try to update library it tells me that there is not enough space.  Of course, the obvious answer, and one that I've read here, is to get a bigger external drive.  But before I spend the $$ to do this, I want to make sure that you understand how the upgrade.  The hard drive on my Mac itself is fairly complete, so if he tries to use somehow * that * as space time to do the upgrade, it won't work even with the biggest external drive.  However, if she only cares about the space on the disk where the iPhoto library sits, a new external drive is the fix.

Anyone know how it works?  Someone got experience with success the upgrade for the Photos on an external drive when you are main internal drive is full?

    Thanks for your help!

  • Nervous about the upgrade to El Capitan!

Need input, OS X 10.9.5, computer works fine most of the time. Should I upgrade or leave it alone. Don't want to screw up my computer. Read the "reviews" on the App Store and I hesitate. Ned first hand experience.

  • Installation of El Capitan on new hard drive using the option createinstallmedia

I'm not able to restore the operating system on a newly installed hard drive.  I replaced my hard drive on a Macbook Pro 2009 or 2010 version.  I created a recovery file on a USB for El Capitan using the createinstallmedia of the Terminal command.  The specific command was: sudo/Applications/Install\ OS\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia--volume/Volumes/Untitled--applicationpath/Applications/Install\ OS\ El\ Capitan.app X\ X\

start the computer holding down the Option button, but do not see anything that runs the options to select a disc of installation or installation of the OS.

    Hello!

"Createinstallmedia" erases and writes on whole thumb drive. So, wipe your drive thumb whole and make sure that it is in a form "Mac OS extended (journaled) map of Partition GUID and named"Untitled"by default. No two partitions, won't work.  I highly recommend a 8 or 16 GB USB key that you can devote especially for this purpose. • MacBook Pro 2009 with slow SSD on El Capitan

    Hi all

I recently put on the upgrade to El Capitan of Mountain Lion, that my Macbook Pro 2009, updated with a crucial v4 SSD and 8 GB ram, was very happy.

Had a very difficult installation that hung a few times, but finally got it set up after resetting the PRAM.

Since he has been very, very slow - beachball right turns and towers - opening an application are a 5 minute job. Printing takes 10. The SATAII connection shows as being to 3 GB, so it should be good. Any other El Capitan on a 2009 MBP running seem happy with it. I activated the trim, it made no difference.

I was not able to find someone else in line with the same config or problem, so grateful if someone has experience - I was wondering if it is worth getting an SSD different, or even the original HDD back in?

    Thank you!

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is particularly bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These must be run as administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Run the Console application in one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first letters of his name in a Spotlight search. Select from the results (it should be at the top).

☞ In the Finder, select go utilities ▹ of menu bar or press the combination of keys shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be all Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ all Messages

in the list of logs on the left. If you don't see this list, select

List of newspapers seen ▹ display

in the menu at the top of the screen bar.

Each message in the journal begins with the date and time when it was entered. Highlight date back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered since then until the end of the episode, or until they begin to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy messages to the Clipboard by pressing Control-C key combination. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command + V.

The journal contains a large amount of information, almost all this is useless to solve any particular problem. When you post a journal excerpt, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't dump blindly thousands of lines in the journal in this discussion.

Please do not post screenshots of log messages - text poster.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the journal excerpt, an error message may appear on the web page: "you include content in your post that is not allowed", or "the message contains invalid characters." It's a bug in the forum software. Thanks for posting the text on Pastebin, then post here a link to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please do not select private in exposure menu to paste on the page, because no one else that you will be able to see it.

  • On my Mac mailbox missing from El Capitan after transfer

I have a lot of mailboxes on my Mac on an old Mac and I want to transfer the entire batch to a new Mac.  Basically I want the Mail app on the new Mac to look identical to the former.

    Both performed El Capitan.

    I tried this:

-a transferred the "Mail" and "Mail Downloads" folder of the old user library folder Mac to the equivalent location on the new Mac.

But when I open the Mail, there is no "on my Mac" section on the left.  I can create one by creating a new mailbox, but only the new mailbox is displayed - no sign of my other. I can see all mailboxes on the blue/white inside the Library/Mail/V3/mailboxes. So they're all visible in there, but I can't as they appear inside the Mail.

    I have already tried:

-Remove parameter files "envelope" in the folder Library/Mail/V3/Maildata - this just rebuilt the box of received/sent-my mailbox on my Mac do not appear.

    Any thought-thanks!

    Hello Simon,

Congratulations on your new Mac! Thank you for reaching out to the Community Support from Apple. There are a few ways you might be able to get these mailboxes moved more by using the Migration Wizard, or by using a backup time Machine.

  • Unable to receive mail after installation of El Capitan

I run a Mac Pro 2012 model and since the passage of Lion in El Capitan, I am unable to receive emails. I can send emails OK. I checked all the preferences of mail several times and they are correct. Internet connection is fine and everything else seems to be OK. Any advice would be appreciated. Bryan

If the e-mail doesn't arrive as soon as you expect

Incoming or outgoing email could take longer to arrive than you expect, or it could happen on a device before arriving on another device.

Email delivery is scheduled by your email provider, and delivery time could also be affected by your Internet provider. If you often experience delays in important e-mail, contact your e-mail provider or your Internet service provider. If delays occur only when communicating with a particular person, that person may need to contact their email provider or your Internet service provider.

Have you installed latest software update.
