They are all under the same Apple ID, so at this point, I'm simply redownloading all of my new purchases on the ol' MacBook ' so I can add it to the iPod... but how long this will be a viable solution? (I realize using products Apple since 2008 is an affront, but you've got to do what you do I do, and I don't currently have pocket for 32 GB change.)

  So the question. Is there an incompatibility of software between my 1st generation iPod touch (3.1.3) and my iMac (El Capitan with iTunes 12.3.2.35 10.11.3)? Is there really a degree of corruption here than Snow Leopard with iTunes 10.6.8 11.4 (18) does not recognize?

  Not sure what you mean by "display port"...  The dock connector of the original iPod (2001) is a FireWire port.  You really have an original 1st gen iPod, with a (not key or click) scroll wheel that physically turns a circle?  Looks like this
