2 updates do not keep install

I have 2 updates that continue to show up to be installed and which continue to not settle (Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and the .net Framework 3.5 Family Update) (cumulative update for ActiveX Killbits for Windows Vista). I installed other updates during this period and they installed fine. But every time I install these two, I get a "Code 8007371 B Windows Update encountered an unknown error." They seem to download OK and the installation, but somewhere along the line they are likely to fail. I can't find this error on the Knowledge Base or anywhere else and don't know what to do about this.

In addition, duing this time, I have a continuous choice to "stop computer and install updates. When I choose the it, it starts to shut down the computer, claims to install update 1 and then turns off the computer. When I turn it back on, the computer always claims that I have to stop and install an update.

I have a laptop Dell Inspiron 1525 with Windows Vista.

Hi Isa40 & frazzld,

Please see the following link for the Microsoft KB article to download The Windows Installer CleanUp utility. When you go to download it follow these steps:

1 Select this option to Save and put it on your desktop

2. click right msicuu2.exe (for Windows Installer CleanUp Utility) and select run as administrator.

3. follow the wizard to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility

Now, click Start>all programs>Windows Installer CleanUp utility (provide administrator rights if prompted). Now, try to locate and remove the .net Framework 3.5 software, after doing so, restart your computer.

Now download and install the NET Framework 3.5 and the update:

1. Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5

2. Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1

3 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for Windows Vista x 86, and Windows Server 2008 x 86

Note: If sure you have .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0 with all updates appropriate before attempting to get a successful install 3.5

We hope this resolves the issue and look forward to hearing back from you on your results.

I finally got fed up with the constant reminders to install the updates so I uninstalled Office 2003, rebooted and reinstalled.

  • Some updates could not be installed: failure on the following security updates - KB974811 KB974556

Please help me solve this problem.  I have automatic updates set to say "updates are ready for your computer.  Click here to see these updates'; Here is the little yellow icon in the system tray low to the right of my screen.  What happens when I click on this icon is usually I then click 'express install' (and non-personalized) and then press "install".

My computer sometimes slows down a bit that it downloads / installs these updates and which can be quite a pain in the thigh because it effects everything that I'm working at the moment, and of course because you have to restart the computer.  I have external hard drives 4 or 5 so I to sequentially turn them off one at a time by ejecting them, turn off the computer and then start it back up and restart the hard drives.

In any case - I can never remember to "SOME UPDATES COULD NOT BE INSTALLED the SCREEN" so I'm at a loss to know what to do.  My computer is perpetually slow because the small yellow Update icon sits in the systray continually trying to draw attention to me and when I do the same thing continues to be time and again - failure!   I tried closing down my antivirus and windows firewall, but nothing helped.

your help would be much appreciated, either tell me how these updates to get the update of my systray icon, or to get updates of pit.
