8.1 Windows update does not work

I got a new Dell XPS 13 accompanying Windows 8.1.  When I switch on, I get a notification that windows updates are ready to be installed.  When I go into settings/update and recovery/Windows Update I don't see is the symbol of waiting turns little (during business hours).  I recently picked up the subscription to McAfee antivirus that is pre installed on the computer.  When I try and open McAfee Central the same thing happens.  These problems also occur when my McAfee firewall is disabled.  I don't know if these problems are linked

I'm afraid that because updates work not I won't be able to get my Windows 10 upgrade, I booked it some time ago, but as of today I have not received my notification.

How can I fix these problems?

Thanks, I solved the problem myself - the simple solution may be useful to others who have encountered the same failure

First of all, I have disabled the firewall and the fact that it has not been set to turn back when I rebooted.
I restarted and went to settings/windows update/choose how to install the updates.
It has been set to download and install automatically, but of course the downloads were not automatically - installing I've changed that to "download updates, but choose to install" and apply the change. Then I went to "view details" and was able to select all downloads uninstalled, which I did and they have installed.
I then rebooted WARNING none; more updates not installed and began to gain 10 download and install.

You must be at Service Pack 3 level before you can use Windows updates.

To determine which service pack is currently installed on your computer, follow these steps:

    1. Click Startand then click run.
    2. Copy and paste, or type the following command, and then click OK:

    winver

A dialog box displays the version of Windows and the service pack that is currently installed on your computer.

If you haven't already done so, you will need to install the SP2 and SP3 (SP1 note no longer exists).

After the reconstruction the new disk, user account control does not recognize Windows programs.

It seems that user account control does not recognize the Windows programs that had found the new HD, but acknowledges those who is downloaded from the internet.
I guess there is a problem with the license, Windows was preinstalled on the Toshiba and replace the hard drive could have caused a few conflicts of licensing.

Corruption of the profiles can be caused by several things: malware infection, bad drivers, corruption of file system of Windows due to stops unsuitable, due to lack of material (RAM and disk hard first "suspects"). You need to know what caused the corruption.

A copy of Lenovo OEM of Windows 7 Ultimate has been installed on a computer with a card mother MSI previous to the introduction of Windows 7... Copies of Lenovo OEM windows are approved by Microsoft for use only with a new Lenovo computer.

The copy installed Windows 7 is a counterfeit. You must purchase a new copy of Windows or to revert to the original copy installed on the computer when it was bought new.

You have Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 is approved for use by large companies, which is not normally found on a computer at home. The permit holder must validate the license. Until it is validated, you will not be able to update to Microsoft Office. If the holder of the license is your employer, you should seek their help, otherwise the software must be removed from your computer.

  • Windows 7 reports as "Not true" after replacement drive. Windows Update does not work. Any idea?

I got a report that my drive was in imminent danger of failure.   Bought and made a direct disc-copy of the old disk cloning.    Everything seems to work fine, but now I'm getting the pop up that says Windows is "not true."    Windows shows as active, and nothing I've tried will stop the pop-up.  Worse, Windows Update does NOT work, and without running a few updates, I'm dead in the water for the use of new devices.

I ran MGADiag.   Here is that content.   Any help is greatly apprectiated!

  • Windows Update does not work after restoring Windows.

I have a HP Mini 210-2080NR netbook with Windows 7 starter (31-bit). My hard drive failed and I replaced it. I ordered a USB HP recovery and then reloaded Windows 7 on new hard drive using the USB recovery drive.

After reloading Windows 7, Windows Update does not work.

This is the error I get:

Windows Update cannot currently check the updates, because the service is not running. You may have to restart your computer.

    My connection is OK.

I restarted my netbook and the error is the same.

I reloaded Windows 7 and the error is the same.

    Any suggestions?

Despite linking all the troubleshooting tips web that I can find my Windows Update will not work and did not work because I replaced my hard drive about a year or two ago. No error message appears.

I don't know what software / driver download for this problem. Can you help me?  Peter.

    Hi Peter

I did some research and found out there are a few prerequisite updates that may be required for installation of Internet Explorer 11. This Microsoft Support link has the list and downloads for the required updates.

  • After clean reinstall XP 2, IE6 continues to break down, Windows Update does not work, so I am unable to download 3 XP and IE8!

Need help to diagnose why, after a clean reinstall of original CD XP2, IE6 continues to break down, and Windows Update is not working correctly,

which means that I am unable to download XP 3 service pack or IE8.

Download sp3 from HERE. Save the file to your desktop. Double-click the file to install sp3 manually.

    Edit: Link fixed.

  • Is anyway to download updates for XP sp1 if Windows Update does not work?

Today I installed Windows XP Home Edition and Windows Update will not work. I need sp2 for at least a few programs for school (office, Kaspersky Anti-virus) is anyway to download sp2 or transfer updates from my other computer that has sp3?

    Install SP3 - http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=24

Operating systems supported: Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional edition, Windows XP Service Pack 1, Windows XP Service Pack 2

You can use this download to PC unique also.

  • Windows Update does not work in Windows 7

Computer desktop running W7 Home Premium 64-bit.  A month ago, realized that Windows Update was not working, hangs on "download updates".  System checked for viruses, etc., and it is clean.  No other changes have been made to this machine.  Tried many suggestions offered here, no joy.  My system is set up to notify me when updates are available, so I can install them.  Lately, he has been erratic, showing different amounts of updates from one day to the other, but I'm not one of them to download.

Here's hoping that someone out there has a magic bullet, or at least a procedure that I can follow as a non-tech user, to get back on the right track.

The updated client is outdated. The value of the automatic updates to "never check for updates" and then restart. Download and install KB3161608

    https://support.Microsoft.com/en-us/KB/3161608

    and try again.
