I get a consistent 80240043 error message when you try to run Windows Update on Vista x 64 device. Thoughts?

According to your Windows Vista architecture you can download then install and run the tool update system - CheckSur you can download the tool from links below depending on your system type and check if you can install the update-
Download the tool update system (64-bit)
Download (32-bit) system update readiness tool

If you are not able to boot from your DVD player, then it sounds as if you may have a hardware problem that is causing problems. You need to try to start with the OEM restore disc or a disc of Windows Vista. If you do not have access to them, and you need to get information on the reader, then I suggest either out the drive and connect it to another PC to try to recover the data. If you are not able to do so a local computer repair shop must provide data recovery services. If you are able to get a Vista DVD and are able to boot from it so you can extract data and save it to an external drive before you perform a repair or reinstall.
