  Provided the specifications of the computer meets Windows XP you can switch from 2000 to XP. If it does not meet the specifications, you may upgrade the computer first or get a new one which is more cheaper today.

  You are allowed to have two facilities enabled, so you can keep the original as a backup if installation you orefer.  If this isn't the case, then the minimum you need to do the old installation is to disable this feature by opening one of the applications and by selecting help-> Deactivate.

  Maybe something else is using setup.exe (maybe a Windows Update or an updated definition AV or who knows what).  I recommend that you restart and try again - the process that should erase everything that has been using setup.exe.  If this does not work, after return and we will try to find out what else is using setup.exe and arrest him or let him finish - as appropriate.
