A mechanical hard drive of switching to a solid state HD

Members of the Forum,

I have no experience in doing this, but I am considering upgrading the hard drive in my X220s (7465 model) to an SSD, hoping the upgrade will increase the speed of the system.

I ask advice and opinions:

1. I have several Windows 7 programs and data using about 50% of the current unit.  How I would transfer current programs and data from the HARD drive for the future SSD?  The complexity is the transfer?

2. the laptop is stored on a Windows Home Server.  Restore on WHS will install the operating system and programs on the SSD?

2. the effort would be useful I would realize a really noticeable change in performance that is worth the effort and expenditure.  The low-voltage 2.26 GHz processor used in the X200s is not the fastest on the block.

I don't know how easy it'll be to clone your the one existing for the new SSD.  There is a software that does - I think Newegg gives you something for free if you buy one of the Intel SSD.

Otherwise, you can do like I did when I upgraded to an SSD. New Windows 7 install and reinstall all my existing software disc, either via download.

The speed bump is worth it in my opinion – it seems that the readers of Intel (X 25 line) are still at the very top of the list of quality and performance by a long shot (and not much more expensive than the other options out there).  AnandTech and Tomshardware have good primers on the SSD market and what to keep in mind if you prepare the switch.

My good experience with putting a small SSD in my office made me out here, I'll only buy machines configured with SSDS.

  • Satellite M30-604 - mechanical hard drive failure

My satellite M30 604 is guaranteed (bought 10 months ago) and my Hitachi travelstar hard drive crashed unexpectedly. The accident is probably mechanical, so I can't use data recovery software (makes things worse). The only way to get my data is to give the HD a specialist who will open in a 'white room' for something like 300-600 Euros (!) and try to recover as much as possible. Now:

-> Toshiba said that if I do that, the guarantee is void and I will also have to pay for a new disk (100 euros)

-> If I want to replace the disk (warranty) then toshiba Gets the old drive and I lose my data forever!

    WAIT A MINUTE GUYS!

    (a) it's my data, my work and you CAN'T make me blackmailing you with such things 'warranty void. I want my old crushed drive back! I want to try to recover as much as I can! my 10 hour work - someday is here!

    (b) Moreover even if the heads of the drive crashed, my PERSONAL, PRIVATE data are always in the disk and CAN be read with special techniques. How toshiba (or any other company for that matter) asking me to give it to them?

    What should I do?
    What would you do?

    Hello
I sympathize with your problem and can suggest only the following reflections:

    1. the recovery of your data seems the most important factor here. I suggest you to remove the HARD drive so that it can be sent to a specialist to retrieve data are possible.

    2. Since the removal of the disc HARD not not usually involves a broad dismantling of Notepad it should not invalidate the remaining warranty (other than on the HARD drive itself).

3 replacement HARD drive can generally be obtained quite a beneficial one of internet sellers price (check using GOOGLE to a suitable replacement). You can then reinstall your OS recovery CD.

    4. I suggest investing in a bunch of backup software (such as Norton Ghost) to avoid this problem in the future. (I had four replacement hard drives on my Satellite A30 in the past 12 months).

  • I had to do a system restore on my PC, which reformats the hard drive and he returned to factory State, and I lost all of my emails from OE and contacts. No way to get them back?

My computer crashed and the system recovery was the only option.  I know this reformats the hard drive and actually returned the PC to factory State, but I cannot now access all of my old emails and contacts on OE.  I managed to configure OE once again, so I can receive messages via my site, but really need to come back to the 'old'.  Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Two points:

Suggestions 1. see Bruce Hagen, but it is highly unlikely that you can get everything back. When you perform a system recovery, you lose everything that was on the disc.

    2. it is late to tell you this, but like you apparenly had no backup on external media, you're playing with fire. For the future, you can read this article I wrote: "how to return your computer regularly upward and reliable" to http://www.computorcompanion.com/LPMArticle.asp?ID=314

  • R51 new HARD drive will not restore factory correctly state with discs

I caught a HDD of 80 GB on old computer my gf, and I thought I would use it to replace the 40 GB hard drive in my ThinkPad R51.  There is not really important info on my old hdd, so I just created a factory recovery disks, put on the new hard drive (both are PATA) and ran from Rescue and Recovery.  After completing restore to factory state all the new hard drive will do is Rescue and new Recovery charge.  It does not load Windows.  Is there anything else I need to do?

Shot in the hip here, but ISTR that some versions of R & R restore the image of 'restoration' in HD, then you restart to R & R and run a restore it to complete the restore of the rest of the car.

As I said, just something I've seen elsewhere.  Worth, perhaps,

  • Z1 HP workstation: C: drive system image backup internal solid state

My professional job to Z1 HP with Windows 7 has 370 GB used space on the C: drive and 146 GB free.

I want to copy / clone a 'System Image backup"from my internal C: drive to an external hard drive.

I heard that the combination "backup system image" in Windows and target disk Western Digital "WD My Passport Ultra' may be problematic.

Does anyone have experience with this and y at - there a better alternative?

An external hard drive with 1 TB of storage space will be "worthy" my 463 GB solid state internal hard drive C:?

    Hello

Thanks for posting in the Forum from HP Support.

Personally, I have not heard of specific issues with this WD HARD drive. I Googled it and found some non-specific stuff.

However, to answer your question: in my view, there is no problem with the 1 TB external harddrive to adapt the SSD from below 500 GB. Therefore larger than GB 463, less than 500 GB, 1 TB, it should fit without problems. There is no problem for cloning SSD and HARD drive imaging (the only problem is that it might be a bit slower, but no problem to do so).

  • Too big for the hard drive from the photo library

My iMac has two internal drives - a hard drive of 250 in the solid state and a disk of 1 TB of data.  I am trying to import about 80 GB of photos. To be able to access on my other devices Apple iCloud, I know, they must be on the HARD DISK, but I don't have enough room due to the large number of iTunes files already there. Is there a solution to this? I wish I could share all my photos between the office, the iPhone and the iPad. Thank you.

Launch of iPhoto, Aperture, or Photos with down option, create a library on the external hard drive, and if you use pictures, set it as the system library. The volume used to store the must be in Mac OS Extended format.

  • The old hard drive SATA SSD upgrade

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I have another question which may be useful for other people doing the same type of recovery.

I ordered the recovery CD for my laptop HP 2000 only today.

To improve performance, I also think to replace the installed at factory 320 hard drive (HDD) with a 240GB solid state drive (SSD).

QUESTION: Should the OS recovery CD/DVD drive must be the same size - 320? Of course, WIndows will adapt very well to a 240 GB drive. Is the recovery process re-create the recovery partition and part of the restoration process?

Thanks for your time and advice.

It is advisable not to go smaller on the replacement drive. SSD are pretty inexpensive for 500G at the moment. You don't want to go smaller. It doesn't have to be the same size, but it must always be greater anything smaller. Resumption of the factory will create AS since the configuration partition and recovery of factory if you use the factory recovery media.

  • No access to an external hard drive

So I plugged my external hard drive in my macbook to move some files on it but it says "the disk you inserted is not readable by this computer." I clicked on initialize and he said: the hard drive is uninitalised and Mont and partition are grayed out. I ran the option of first aid, but he only said: the operation completed successfully. I am aware of that my external hard drive works because it is blue is lit and I used it a few days ago and it worked fine. I also plugged into another usb key I have and it works perfectly.

Is there anyway for me to access my files on the external hard drive? I really don't want to lose my photos and files!

The external hard drive is a tough drive 320 freecom.

the light means power can get to the case, not the drive past any integrity checking. If the drive is older it may break or it could have been failure, or requires 3rd party software to allow full access, if it is NTFS formatted for windows and you use it on a mac.

If you do not backup your data may be missing. If you start the boot disk process, you have already started to remove the files and more you try using that drive less whatever it is (if any) can be recovered.

Freecom offers guarantees of 3 years on their mechanical hard drives but offers no guarantee with recovery of lost data (no company only)

    http://www.Freecom.com/warranty

If your player is longer than 3 years its not rare that its failure and should be replaced with a new unit.

In the meantime, you can try a 3rd party solution such as Disk Warrior or rescue for Mac to see if something can be saved, but still no service company forensic or data will always claim that they can do it with any degree of certainty to recover your data.

  • Remove and turn hard drive

    Hello

I have a 2 TB drive Fusion on my iMac 5 k end of 2015.

I would check how noisy is my hard drive. To do this, I have reinstalled OSX on my SSD external drive and restart her iMac. After that I freely disassembled Fusion of the system drive.

Question is: the unmount command does in practice on the mechanical hard drive?

The drive disappears from the system, but what else? Is it still mechanically spinning / running and generating sounds while?

Disassembly of a mechanical drive can not off power to the drive, but the reader can stop spinning after a period of time depending on the firmware of the player. If the Player stops turning then after a minute or two if you mount the drive then there usually a few seconds before the reader appears due to the rotation upward of late.

  • You can use an external hard drive with the Mac Mini?

I've seen videos that say that we cannot increase the ram on a min of Mac, but I'm curious if this works like an ordinary computer, if we can attach an external hard drive to store some of the memory to free up space. Sorry if this is something stupid just need to know what I can do with it.

You can use an external hard drive to boot and run with any Mac. Its not going to improve or replace your ram. If you use a mechanical hard drive in any Mac then help and boot from an external drive, especially if it's a SSD will be significantly faster.

  • HP Pavilion p6280t PC: Western Digital hard drive Compatible for HP Pavilion p6280t desktop PC

I need to replace the internal hard disk for this old model of PC.  It came with a hard drive from 750 GB 7200 RPM SATA 3 Gb/s (Seagate).  What drive Western Digital hard (750 GB or 1 TB) is compatible with this computer?

The limitation of SATA is more like a heading of speed that allows the bus. (6 Gb/s) SATAIII allows real world speeds of up to 600 MB/s while SATAII (3 Gbps) allows speeds of up to Bot 300 Mbps connections. allowing speeds of over the current maximum capacity of any mechanical hard drive. Best performing discs can go up to 200 MB/s, so it wouldn't really matter if you use SATAII or SATAIII. You should be fine using either for the WD Black and you shouldn't see any difference in transfer speeds.

  • Re: Satellite A300/U01 - failure of HARD drive?

I tried to start my A300/U01 this morning and nothing happened after the noise/power/keyboard illuminated lights.

I tried again and this time, the BIOS screen is appeared, but nothing later. The HD light never informed. I hear the ticking of the light in the machine, but nothing as if the HD was running fine.

    (1) that indicate a mechanical failure of the hard drive?
    (2) if so I lost all data on this drive?

I have only a single folder, I care; Unfortunately, I've been lax in my backup.

    > 1) is - that this Signals a mechanical hard drive failure?
N ° access to the BIOS (press F2) and check if the HARD drive is listed in the BIOS. If it s are not not in the BIOS, this means that the HARD disk is dead.

(> 2) if so I lose all the data on this drive?
Well, if the HARD drive was dying then you would lose data also, but first it of necessary to know if the HARD drive is really dead. For this check point 1.

  • HP dv6 envy: want to know on the best internal hard drive to replace it with

Hi friends... I return my hp dv6 want 3 years and it has worked well for me so far, but since last month, everytime I turn on my laptop, a message is popping indicating that YOUR HARD DISK has FOUND YEAR IMMINENT FAILURE AND there NEED TO BE REPLACED and I studied a lot of posts here regarding this problem and everyone was asked to replace it with a new one. I don't know what drive should I replace it with. Could someone please help me in this regard. I need the following details:

    1. where can I find new internal hard drive HP ENVY DV6 1 to buy?

    2. can we replace this hard drive with the hard drive to other companies? (such as seaggate)... If so, so, please let me know

    3. can I replace the hard drive with a hard drive of 1 to solid state?

    4. links to vendors who sell internal hard drive?

    Please help me friends...

The answer is Yes in all areas. The laptop will accept any 2.5 inch wide disk SATA 9.5 or 7 mm thick and which includes mechanical hard drives and Solid State drives. Where are you located (one country)? Hard drives and SSDS for laptops are a part of the goods. You can pick them up at a Best Buy or Frys if you live where there are no Frys or you can use amazon.com or newegg.com or similar online service. The prices vary a lot, so it is useful to get a good deal. A 1 to SSD can run more than $300, you know. Need instructions for installing and/or migrating software? We are a bit like McDonalds here in the Forum... served billion regarding replace drive hard/updates to level. One of the specialties of the House, so to speak.
