A product key, but no disc?

I have a desktop HP Pavilion a1740n with Vista Home Premium. Unfortunately, the motherboard is out and now I have it replaced I can't re - install Vista using recovery system provided by HP, disks, even if I have a valid product key. Is there a way I could get a disc from Microsoft without having to buy new Vista?

Hello

you came preinstalled Vista is an OEM license and any card mother change/upgrade must be done in collaboration with the computer manufacturer, in your case HP

the HP recovery disks contains the drivers for the motherboard of origin

and an OEM license is bound to the original equipment installed on

That's why you had to contact HP about changing motherboards, if they would

and Microsoft does not record the OEM brand computers

It is the responsibilitiy on the computer manufacturer

had to refomat laptop computer after a virus, have lost everything. Reinstalled windows xp recovery disc. There is a 7 product key of windows on the underside of the laptop.

Is it possible to reinstall without buying another copy of Windows 7?

    Hi idlavelle,

The product key on the underside belongs to the preinstalled version of Windows 7 and can not be used with a normal installation disc for Windows 7.

In addition if your laptop comes with Windows 7 preinstalled you must create a recovery disc yourself with pre-installed recovery disc creator. All this is mentioned in the user manual, but it seems you didn t he read why? :(

Now it s too late and if you want the original off back of settings box you will need to order a recovery disc here:

    Hello

There is no Windows Vista downloads available from Microsoft.

You can contact your computer manufacturer and ask them to send you a set of recovery disks.

They should do this for a small fee.

Some manufacturers have more available Vista recovery disks.

If this happens, you may need to try this instead:

You can also borrow and use a Microsoft Vista DVD, which contains the files for the different editions of Vista (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) must be installed. The product key on your computer / Laptop box determines what Edition is installed.

Other manufacturers recovery DVDs are should not be used for this purpose.

And you need to know the version of 'bit' for Vista, as 32-bit and 64-bit editions come on different DVDs

And once the operating system is installed, go to your computer manufacturer's website and get the latest drivers for your particular model or laptop computer.

  • Reinstall windows on the larger hard drive with the product key, but not drive. PC was custom and retailer out of business.

It is my mother's computer.  She is 90 and is unwilling to learn a new OS.  I want to reinstall XP on a hard disk that has 300 GB and is already installed in the E drive.  His original hard drive is 40 GB and 35 are in use.  I have the original Windows product key but not the windows CD.  the retailer who has built and sold this pc is out of business.  What is the best way to achieve this?

You can borrow a retail XP CD from a friend of yours and activate it using your product key.

Just make sure that if your key is for home then get XP Home etc.

Sorry, but I can't understand your question.

You have a Windows XP installation CD?

You have your product key? If so, what type of Windows installation has been this - OEM (for example, if it is preinstalled on the computer) or retail?

There is nothing on the CD that binds to a particular product key, but the CD that you use must match the CD in regard to OEM edition compared to the retail and upgrade vs. full,.

If you buy a CD without a product key, it is not authentic; It is hacked, and you would look in trouble.

And in regards to the used CDs, note that a copy retail may be moved from one computer to another, but an OEM one cannot.
