A virtual machine or the template with the same name is already registered. Server error: the specified key name or identifier already exists.

Hi all

I have a 5.5 esxi server just the a virtual machine running at the moment. I try to clone this as shown below:

http://nchrissos.WordPress.com/2013/04/22/cloning-a-VM-without-vCenter-in-ESXi-5-1-free-edition/

However, I get the error:

A virtual machine or the template with the same name is already registered. Server error: the specified key name or identifier already exists.

I have no vcenter (yet), and it's just the 1 vm. The virtual machine is turned off. I get this error regardless of the name, I said that when I choose "add to the inventory.

All advice appreciated.

Thank you

Oh dear...
you read bad advice on the internet and then you get also the stupid advice here.

Ignore both!

If you want to clone a virtual machine by copying - do it like this:

Create new virtual machine with the wizard.
Skip creating a disk for new customers.

In Datastorebrowser copy the original vmdk to the new dir, which has been created by the wizard.
Reopen the new VM and edit - assign the vmdk that you just copied.

The procedure of the blog is not supposed to work.
Sissine trick doesn't make sense either

  • Delete the virtual machine to the specified date

    I'm trying to write a script to remove a virtual computer on a certain date.  Currently, I want people to add this in the name of the virtual machine "VMname_Delete-/ 1/1/14", I then search for the virtual computer with:

    Get - VM | where {$_.name - cmatch "Delete-\d\/\d\/\d"}

    With that, I'm sure that the correct VM is selected, and I tested it with virtual machines to make sure.  Now comes the hardest part (at least for me), I want to take the date to which belongs the VM name, convert it to a DateTime and then compare it to the current date.  If they match, I want to remove the virtual machine.  I tried something in the sense of:

    Get - VM | where {$_.name - cmatch "Delete-\d\/\d\/\d"} | foreach {$_ .name-split "-"}

    Which of course divide the table edge, and on tests, I had an output similar to:

    VM_Delete

    01/01/14

    Of course, now I don't know how to finish the rest.  I thought that the script would be something like:

    Get - VM | where {$_.name - cmatch "Delete-\d\/\d\/\d"} | {foreach}

    If (($_.name-split «-»)-[DateTime] - game (get-date-format ' MM/dd/yy'))

    {Remove-VM - VM $_ - DeletePermanently}

    }

    I don't see the logic in my head, but of course, I just can't write they way I think it should go.  Any help is appreciated.

    Perhaps you could do something in this direction

    $now = get-Date

    Get - VM | where {$_.name - cmatch "Delete-\d\/\d\/\d"} | {foreach}

    $dt = [datetime]($_.) Name.Split('-') [1])

    If ($dt - lt $now) {}

    Remove-VM - VM $_ - DeletePermanently

    }

    }

    With the use of the index ([1]), we select the date part of the name of the virtual computer.

    Then we have "cast" the string into a DateTime object.

    Note that typeface could cause problems, depending on the culture settings you use.

    Worse, divide you the date on the character string ' / ' and then generate the DateTime object as follows

    $now = get-Date

    Get - VM | where {$_.name - cmatch "Delete-\d\/\d\/\d"} | {foreach}

    $dummy, $year $day, $month = $_. Name.Split('-') [1]. Split('/')

    $dt = get-Date-day $day - month $month-year $year

    If ($dt - lt $now) {}

    Remove-VM - VM $_ - DeletePermanently

    }

    }

  • New virtual machine for the model with the specific name

    Hello

    I'm trying to add some model VM to VAPP using recomposeVApp (...). And it works well except that I can not change the name of the virtual machine while recomposing. It takes the name of the model. But how to add VMS to model with the specific name? I use the v1.0 API.

    This is my code:

    ReferenceType vmTemplateRef = new ReferenceType();
    vmTemplateRef.setName ("MyNewVM"); This name is ignored. The name of the model is taken!
    vmTemplateRef.setHref (vmRef.getHref ()); reference to the model

    CompositionItemParamType vmItem = new CompositionItemParamType();
    vmItem.setSource (vmTemplateRef);

    create the type params VAPP recompose.
    RecomposeVAppParamsType recomposeVAppParamsType = new RecomposeVAppParamsType();
    recomposeVAppParamsType.setName (vAppRef.getName ()); The name of vApp. It is ok.

    added the element of the virtual machine.
    The newItems < CompositionItemParamType > recomposeVAppParamsType = list
    . getItem().
    newItems.add (vmItem);

    Task task = vapp.recomposeVapp (recomposeVAppParamsType);

    Thank you

    Hello

    For after this code fragment:

    vmTemplateRef.setName ("MyNewVM"); This name is ignored. The name of the model is taken!

    The model name is ignored because vmTemplateRef is the only reference to the object that will be used for the operation of recomposition. If changing the name it will be always ignored.

    I think that changing the name of the virtual machine template for recompose cannot be done as follows:

    (1) operation recomposeVApp().

    (2) get the recomposed VAPP

    (3) download the children-> VM you want to change.

    (4) change the name of the virtual computer.

    I hope this helps!

    I have a cluster of three ESX servers.  They are IBM 3650 and they are the exact same material bought at the same time.  They even the same exact versions of the firmware (bios, bmc, nic firmware, HBAs, raid, HDD firmware, rsa, etc.).  I started their reclassification of ESX 3.5u3 to ESX4 with all the latest patches.  Then I updated one moved some top vm and upgraded vmware tools and virtual materials without problem.  So, I went and upgraded the following ESX Server and has started moving the machines on that one and upgraded vmware tools and virtual hardware.  I tested the functionality of the ESX servers and they seem to work fine.  I vmotioned machine version 4 hardware virtual machine between the two developed level ESX host very well so I me with the upgrade process.  Then I had to vmotion, one of the virtual machines updated (version 7 of material) between the two ESX hosts newly improved and they won't vmotion.  It gives me the error CPU host is not compatible with the requirements of the judgment of the VM to CPUID level register 0 x 1 'ecx '.  The full error message is in the attachment.

    Apparently, the virtual machine hardware upgrade exposed a few additional things virtual machine that prevents vmotion to work.  I don't know what and I'm quite surprised because these machines are identical identical hardware and firmware.

    As I set up my computer with Windows 7 Professional and XP virtual machine, I could see all the readers, W7 and the virtual machine on the same screen. I can't do now for some reason any. All I can understand what is is past is that I got a page long list of automatic updates of W7 and some XP updates and as far as I know, the current page of readers has disappeared since then.  I need this feature if I can transfer files between W7 and XP because some of my programs are in one program of windows. I have nothing special when I installed XP to achieve this functionality, so I really don't understand what it controls.  How can I get that back?

    I have solved my problem by trying everything that moves. Here are my steps:

  • Put virtual machines inside the VMkernel port group

    Hello

    Network for administrators of VMware SIAS layout:

    "You can not put VMs within that group of port because it is made especially for a VMkernel port."

    However, I use ESXi 5.5 and is able to put normal interface of VM inside the vmk port group. (I only created 1 vmk port group so all virtual machines in the same group with the vmkernel interface)

    May I know if this is a new feature, or something is wrong?

    Thank you!

    This may be possible with distributed switches not with standard switches.

  • Hang a new virtual machine to the Internet

    All virtual machines that I downloaded connect to internet automatically when I their fire upwards. I downloaded a new machine virtual de VulnHub, specifically BrainPan2. It does not connect to the internet automatically even if it is supposed to. It's a vulnerable VM installation for security penetration testing. Now, I start my VM Kali, do a scan of the network and see all my computers. I'll start a VM unrelated, rerun the scan and check the other appears. Now I launch BrainPan, run the scan and nothing. I don't see on the scan.

    I read several guides associated with the virtual BrainPan2 of the internet machine, and everyone seems to be able to plug in and go. On the site of the BrainPan: 'import brainpan2.ova into your privileged hypervisor and configure the settings of the network to your needs. It will get an IP via DHCP, but it is recommended that run you to the breast of a NAT or visible by the host only operating system because it is vulnerable to attack."

    So, I put the virtual machine to run on NAT, connected by a bridge and also host. I can't detect the virtual machine by any means, it just is not auto-connect. And I can not connect and plug it as he did to hack.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Hi John,.

    I'm using the regular VMware Fusion, not Fusion Pro. Fusion Pro is a virtual network editor that could help; I do not know. Just for fun, I downloaded BrainPan2 VM, and it worked only. Here are the steps I took:

    • Go to Brainpan: 2 ~ VulnHub
    • Click Download, which exposes the download link.
    • Download the file brainpan2.zip and unzip it.
    • Check the integrity of the downloaded file brainpan2.ova. In terminal, type 'openssl sha1', and then drag the file brainpan2.ova to the Terminal to fill in the full path of the brainpan2.ova file. Press return. Compare the sha1 hash in the terminal with one on the web page of the BrainPan. If they do not match, try again download.
    • Open VMware Fusion 8 and choose file-> import. Drag the file brainpan2.ova to the window. Click on the button continue and save the converted virtual machine. VMware Fusion will display a progress bar as it converts the file .ova. It took a few minutes on my Mac. Once the conversion is completed, you will see a window Finished.
    • Click Customize settings.
    • As part of the network card, select private to my Mac.
    • Start the virtual machine of BrainPan2. I don't bother to upgrade the hardware. You will see a login prompt, which I ignored. The BrainPan2 virtual machine will get an IP address from the DHCP server on VMware virtual network.

    Optional:

    • Open the BrainPan2.vmwarevm file in the Finder. Right-click to display the contents of the package. Open the vmware.log with a text editor like BBEdit or TextWrangler or even TextEdit. Search for "192.168" and you will find two entries to the VMware virtual networks. On my system, the private sector in my Mac network was vmnet1 to 192.168.166. * (I guess that the other network is the "share with my Mac" NAT.) He was appointed vmnet8.)
    • Close the log file.

    Instead of Kali Linux, I used one of my virtual machines in OS X, because it was very convenient. (My Kali Linux virtual machine are saved on an external drive). The virtual machine of OS X I used runs El Capitan, but any version of Mac OS X.

    • Take a snapshot of the OS X machine for two reasons: (1) to maintain its normal parameters and (2) because I don't trust the BrainPan2 virtual machine to not attack the OS X machine on the VLAN.
    • After the snapshot set network configuration of the virtual machine of the OS X private to my Mac, so that it is on the same virtual network as the virtual machine of BrainPan2.
    • Start Mac virtual machine. In the terminal, type "ifconfig en0" to see its IP address on the local network deprived of VMware. There are other ways to find the IP address, of course. My virtual machine to OS X has been awarded 192.168.166.129, so I figured though the virtual machine of BrainPan2 has been assigned to 192.168.166.128, which proved to be just.
    • If it is not already installed, download nmap or Zenmap or tools of everything that you need. A Kali Linux preinstalled.
    • Run a scan of the LAN ping. Example: ' nmap - sn 192.168.166. * "you should see the virtual switch to 192.168.x.1, your virtual Kali Linux or OS X machine and the virtual machine of BrainPan2 (mine was 192.168.166.128 as I suspected). The virtual machine BrainPan2 responds to the pings.
    • At this point, I ran a scan of port of the virtual machine of BrainPan2. Not wishing to spoil your fun, I will only say that I found the open ports on the BrainPan2 virtual machine.

    Don't forget to restore your virtual machine OS X (or Kali Linux) to the previous snapshot once you are done with BrainPan2, if nothing else, but to restore access to the Internet by moving out of virtual private LAN.

    I hope this helps. Please let us know if you are able to make it work. I hate to write solutions and then never discover what happens then.

  • List of virtual machines in the data store that is not in stock

    Hi guys

    PowerCLI rookie here, sorry for the stupid questions.

    I'm trying to clean up a bunch of singehost with local data warehouses. So I need a script that can display a list of files of virtual machine on a data store that is not used by VMs in the inventory. One of the problems is that the files on the data store, isn't every means, named exactly the same as the virtual machine in the inventory.

    Summer watching this, but I think the term "orphan" is "sent, in my view, it is:

    https://communities.VMware.com/thread/266913

    Also it is - this one, I think that I should be able to change it to do what I want:

    http://www.wooditwork.com/2011/08/11/adding-VMX-files-to-vCenter-inventory-with-PowerCLI-gets-even-easier/

    Any tips or hints to push me in the right direction would be appreciated.

    Please try:

    $AllFilesLocalDatastore = get-data store 'localdatastorename ' | Get-fileindatastore

    $FilesIdentifiedAsAssociatedToAllVMs = get-FilesIdentifiedAsAssociatedToAllVMs

    #The two functions above are available here http://thecrazyconsultant.com/find-orphaned-vmdk-files-workflow/

    Check the contents of the two variables for example with VGO or export-csv

    $AllFilesInESX01LocalDatastore | OGV

    Try:

    $FilesNotIdentifiedAsAssociatedToAnyVM = $AllFilesLocalDatastore | {foreach-object

    $FullPath = $_. FullPath

    If ($FilesIdentifiedAsAssociatedToAllVMs.FileName - notcontains $FullPath) {}

    Return $_

    }

    }

    $FilesNotIdentifiedAsAssociatedToAnyVM | OGV

    #The over a will contain all the files that are not identified as associated with any virtual computer

    $ProbablyOrphanedFiles = $FilesNotIdentifiedAsAssociatedToAnyVM | where {$_.} FileTypeFullName-match "VMware.Vim.Vm *"-GOLD ($_.) FileTypeFullName - eq "VMware.Vim.FileInfo" - AND ($_.)   • Models of virtual machine in the library of content focus type = unknown

    Hello

    I created a test with vsphere environment 6 and I created a content library for my VM models.

    That worked well for the last few months, but today I have connected the web client and wanted to deploy a new virtual machine from the content library.

    First thing I noticed was the selection after "deploy vm from library" - the library is empty...

    When I look directly in the content library, models are still there, but the type is unknown and not possible to export the s model or deploy...

    Any ideas what I can do?

    I already rebooted the server vcenter...

    I found a work around...

    I was able to clone the model with type = unknown, and the watch type = clone model vm and the guest OS is displayed correctly, too...

  • Tagged management VLAN and the virtual machines on the same VLAN

    I'm faced with a problem related to our Brocade switches newly acquired and get the private VLAN to work on trunk connections to our ESX servers.  Every time I try something different, he creates a new problem.

    In our configuration, our management of VLAN is not tag and we have a VLAN for this management network that is placed on our switches VLAN no marked native.  We also have virtual machines hosted on those same ESX servers that are on the same VLAN and everything works fine.  However, when I change the ESX management to carry a label on this VLAN and change the switchports accordingly (IE no untagged VLAN native), management work, but hosted on the ESX Server machines that are on the same VLAN can get no network connectivity.

    Is it possible to have a management network labeled and also the host of virtual machines on the same VLAN or is it totally impossible?  I'm not very familiar with networking behind ESX, so I apologize if this is a dumb question with an obvious answer.

    Thank you

    Mark J.

    Is it possible to have a management network labeled and also the host of virtual machines on the same VLAN or is it totally impossible?

    Yes, it is possible... why it doesn't work for you I don't know, but try the following:

    1. set up the Group of ports of VMS to use VLAN;

    2 configure the interface of management VMkernel port group use VLAN;

    3 configure the physical switch port to allow to this VLAN and put the default VLAN natively for these interfaces.

  • Create new virtual machine of the model that have two hard drives in the different data store

    We do VM deploy automation with PowerCLI.

    There is already a model created with at least two hard drives to one side and each hard drive belong to difference datastore,

    In the model's operating system is Windows server 2008 R2 already installed VMware Tools and other software in the second (other than C: driver) driver

    We can successfully deploy a new virtual machine with this manually with vSphere client model.

    But when we try to make the deployment with PowerCLI, can not find examples of similar scripts in the document of reference,

    and we also google this question, still no similar question was found.

    Is this possible with PowerCLI? If it's possible could you give me some advice or an example of script, thank you!

    Best regards.

    I already found the solution.

  • Virtual machine in the DMZ

    Hello

    We have 8 guests ESXi 5.0 in our internal network, network cards connected to 2 internal switches of the kernel.

    Can I do below;

    (1) create a new virtual switch "vSwitchDMZ" on one of the host, with "DMZ_VLANid".

    (2) assign a NIC to this vSwitchDMZ

    (3) connect this adapter to the physical switch DMZ port (this port will be access VLAN for this id VLAN individual)

    (4) create a new virtual machine with 1 NIC and assign it DMZ_VLANid

    Question:

    (A) I need to create 2 virtual machines in the DMZ. I can do it, or there is risk involved?

    (B) If no, then how the maintenance of the 2 mV in DMZ can be achieved? We have no license Cisco Nexus 1000v.

    Hope that I am able to explain my concern.

    Thank you

    Mihir

    A.) Yes it is possible. As long as the virtual machines connect only to the DMZ vSwitch, and DMZ vSwitch has only an uplink to the physical DMZ pass it's ok form a networking perspective.

    You can even create a DMZ switch on each of the hosts to use HA and vMotion for VM in case it is needed.

  • Orchestrator 5.1 REPORT-all the virtual machines in the data center and create a CSV file

    Hello

    What I basically want to do is create a report CSV of all virtual machines in the data center with various information (VMname, domain name FULL, IPaddress, status, data warehouses, tools etc...).  The export list in the client feature is insufficient (especially for any KPI report).

    Problem: (workflow is still under construction so real email send does not not and need to clean the code)

    I am stuck at the part of the creation of a table that can be parsed correctly in the CSV file.  2 ways I've tried will produce a report of single object or combine all of the table into a single string (where I am now).  I think the main problem I have is that I have to create a 2D within my service to push toward the final table that is written to the CSV format.  Basically, I do not understand how to push my variables in a loop of a table.

    Any help or assistance?

    Thank you

    BOOM!

    Added some comments, removed the hardcoded in the csv temp file, deleted path the hardcoded port 25 for SMTP - mail settings should come from the configuration of the MAIL plug-in. And fixed / confirmed that the workflow now includes the attachment for e-mail and ends with success!
