I have a HP dv7-4296nr, partition recovery and recovery disks. Now, I want to change the current HARD drive to the new HARD drive. But I wonderring after I change the HARD drive, can I use the restore disc I burned before reinstalling windows?

Hello

Yes you can. Your existing set of recovery disks will not only install the operating system on the new hard drive, but will also reinstall all of the original software that came with your laptop as well as re - create the Partition D of recovery on the new drive.

• I'm trying to run a program back to 7. I know it is not possible, but anyone who has used dosbox? And if I load xp on an external hard drive can I have essentially two separate computers?

How can I run a program back through windows 7? DOSbox? zinstall? Or loading of a xp via external hard drive? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

DOSbox or BACK (or XP or another 32-bit version of WIndows) on a virtual machine.

An external hard drive can be used only if it is connected by SATA (not USB). In this case, it seems to be an internal drive.

If you have Windows 7 Professional, you can use XP Mode. Otherwise, use VMWare Player http://www.vmware.com/products/player/, Virtualbox http://www.virtualbox.org/ or Windows Virtual PC http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx to host your virtual machine.

In the back of the System Image, I find that the system only allow to use external hard disc.

May I know after I created the image of the system, should I completely stop the use for other purposes?

If I save files inside, it causes the system recovery process in the future to failure?

Yes, external hard drives can be used to make files backup and store. Backups are stored in separate locations and files user does not, unless the save area is changed manually.

• I have a WD external hard drive that I used for a while and all of a sudden I can't.

The device is a USB connected external hard drive. I used it on a regular basis until today. When I connect it it seems to connect (it lights up), and when he did it before she would open a window that would ask if I wanted to open and examine its contents. It does not now. When I go to Start computer it is no longer present upward with the other HD etc. I took it on another computer and it worked fine. I wonder if a driver does not work?

Restore points should be back fairly in time, if you have enabled the restoration of the system.

Read the information contained in the links I provided. about how to use system restore.

You do not accept the available Restore Point.

• Do I need an external hard drive if I use iCloud?

Do I need an external hard drive if I use iCloud? I had used a Western Digital My Book Essential Edition, 500 GB, for the past 7 years. It kept blinking and blinks so I unplugged probably too old.

Now, I'm wondering if I should get another external hard drive or if iCloud does automatic backups. I'm not too knowledgeable on these things and would appreciate help.

I use a Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite.

Thank you!

Yes, you need an external hard drive to back up your Mac. iCloud or iCloud library reader are not a backup of your data and documents. Are the copy job. Get a new external drive with enough storage - Lear three times the size of the internal drive of your Mac and then set up Time Machine.

• Can I get my favorites on an external hard drive that I use as support? I have Windows 7 Edition Home Premium.

I've been backing up my computer with Windows 7 Home Premium on an external hard drive. I've been using manual backup when I plug the external hard drive. I tried looking for the folder of Firefox but can't seem to find it. He recorded with all of the other files and folders, and if so how do I enter it?

Your Firefox profile would have the data. You can find it at:

• C:\Users\ < Windows user/login name > \AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ < profile folder >

• The file you want is called places.sqlite

You can copy this file if you want to restore your bookmarks to your current Firefox back to C:\Users\ < Windows user/login name > \AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ < profile folder > and overwrite the current file. Keep in mind, this will delete your current bookmarks.

• Since I downloaded El Capitan I think I can't paste it into my external hard drive. I use to download my card reader, copy it, and then download to a new folder on the external drive. It will not work now and nor can I create new folders on the hard dr

I used to download pictures from a card reader, copy them, and then stick it on my external hard drive. Since El Capitan of download, it does not work - I can download and copy, but can not stick to the external hard drive. I can't set up the files on the external hard drive either. However, I can download what is already on the external hard drive without any problem.

How the external drive is formatted?

• Formatting an external hard drive to FAT32 using vista

Hello

I own an Xbox 360 and a Windows Vista-based computer. I wanted to store music and movies on an external hard drive and connect it to my Xbox 360 so I can make use for more then just a game. I first tried this using a 2 GB USB key and it worked better then I could have hoped. However, given that 2 GB does not go very far, I went out and bought a FreeAgent 1.5 TB drive external hard. I can use it in Vista and works very well, but it does not recognize the Xbox 360. I read in a forum that the 360 requires the external hard drive to FAT32, but Vista cannot format the disc in all except exFAT and NTFS. How can I get the external drive in a format that can recognize the Xbox?

Thanks in advance.

Hello, Durandal95

Please use the Forum for answers.

You can format a drive using the FAT, FAT32, exFAT and NTFS filesystems using the format command-line tool.

WARNING: Formatting your drive will completely erase it, exercise caution when you use the format features.

To do this, go to start, all programs, accessories, click with the right button on command prompt and choose Run as administrator. In the command prompt window, type the following command and press ENTER: format X: / FS: FAT32 / q
Note: Replace X: the good reader.

You can find help on the XBOX on both, the help and the community pages:

I hope this helps.

• Windows 7 asks Me to format the Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive I've used for more than a month

I used Seagate FreeAgent as my external hard drive for more than a month now, but recently I am unable to access Windows 7 asks me to format it to use it. Somehow I can format the HDD without losing my data? Or does perform a work around?

Hi NuVille,

Before perform us any of the steps, first of all I suggest you to create a backup of the data stored in your external hard drive on another computer.

To save the data, you can connect your external hard drive on another computer and copy all the files and folders on the other computer. Later, you can connect the external drive to the Windows 7 computer and try to run the disk error checking and check if that helps you solve the problem.

Access the link below and follow the steps to check the drive for errors and fix it.
http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/check-a-drive-for-errors

After completing the disc you error checking, try to check if you can access the drive.

If the steps above do not I suggest you try to format the hard drive. Access the link below and follow the steps to format the hard drive.
http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/create-and-format-a-hard-disk-partition

Note: there is no way to format without losing any data on the disk. Formatting the drive will erase all data. This is why you must back up the data before formatting the hard drive.

I hope this helps. Let us know the results.

• Can I install Windows 7 on an external hard drive and then put it back in the computer as a hard drive internal?

Here's the situation, I reinstall Windows 7 on my laptop when it all of a sudden to stop. Now he cannot start Windows and only shows the Startup Repair tool. IM thinking if I can get my hard drive and put it in a hard drive enclosure and install windows in it as a hard drive external. And after installation, I will put the normal back on my laptop as a hard drive. Will this work?

Furthermore, I can't boot any disk installation because the built-in DVD player does not work, also I can not change startup option because I can't access the BIOS, there the password and I do not know. Please someone help! :( Thank you!

As a general rule, Microsoft allows not 'officially' most versions of Windows (9 x--> 7) to boot from an external hard drive. However, there could be an exception to this rule. eSATA pregnant use signals to 'SATA' HDD on an "external" port

• Cannot delete files from the external hard drive after copying using Robocopy

Original title:! VERY DIFFICULT QUESTION! Files that cannot be deleted!

I did a robocopy and he left during the night and when I came back it was in some kind of loop and my external hard drive was full. The files are not visible in Explorer and if I try to delete them in the command line that fails because some are too long. Urgent I need to redo the space on this external and copy the files to my parents and charity before fly me soon. Please can someone help me.

* Looks like that I have multiple instances of the same files

I don't know if you will be able to do this before your flight, but the drive must be partitioned and formatted, reformatted, or scanned for errors of NTFS file allocation table with repairs enabled. Depending on the size of the disk, this could take some time. You can also check statistics of SMARTDRIVE with a utility like Crystal Info disc to see if it is a failure.

If you do not drive Professional recovery tools available, the native CHKDSK will do in a pinch.

C:\Windows\System32>chkdsk /?
Checks a disk and displays a status report.

[CHKDSK [volume [[path] filename]]] [/ f] [/ v] [/ r] [/ x] [/ I] [/ c] [/ l [: size]] [/ b]

volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon),
mount point or volume name.
filename FAT/FAT32 only: Specifies the files to check for fragmentation.
/F fixes errors on the disk.
/V FAT/FAT32: displays the full path and the name of each file
on the disk.
On NTFS: Displays the eventual cleanup messages.
/R Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information
(implies / f).
L:size NTFS only: changes the size of the logfile to the specified number
of kilobytes. If the size is not specified, displays currently
size.
/X force the volume to unmount it first if necessary.
All open handles to the volume would then be invalid
(implies / f).
/I NTFS only: performs a less vigorous check of index entries.
/C NTFS only: skips, checking of cycles within the folder
structure.
/B NTFS only: Re-evaluates bad clusters on the volume
(implies / r)

The /I or /C switch reduces the amount of time required to run Chkdsk by
skip certain checks of the volume.

Any routine review and car repair will take time. CHKDSK is no exception.

• Backup to external hard drive on iCloud > > used internal hard disk space

Is there a way to backup disks external hard on iCloud without iCloud with disk space hard internal iMac?

I tried an external hard drive to backup to iCloud and although it does not copy in iCloud. It also eliminates the same amount of available space on the hard drive of my iMac.

Does this mean that iCloud only backs up files on an internal drive so it copies them from external drives to the internal main? Is this a problem external disk hard/iCloud? Is it possible to set this up properly?

The files are logical X. This could be a logic X / question iCloud? I know the hype for iCloud said any file, but no logic X icon in the system preferences iCloud box. Set to true any file ?

Thanks for any information you have.

Data in iCloud cannot synchronize from an external hard drive.

iCloud does not synchronize data from logic X.

• Homegroups: an external hard drive can be shared in a homegroup in win 7?

Have established a network of homegroup, sharing of libraries, but I wish I could share an external drive for backups with moving them the reader from one place to another

Hi abratton. Here's a topic that should help you. Find the section "Include a folder on an external hard drive in a library."

http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/include-folders-in-a-library

Once you have included the files in a library, then make sure you share this library with your homegroup:

http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/access-files-and-printers-on-other-HomeGroup-computers (see the section "including a shared folder in a library").

Hope that helps.
