Access denied to my "Documents and Settings" folder

I am running Vista Home Premium w/SP 1 is installed on a 64-bit system.

I tried everyting to correct the line 'access denied' when never try to open the D & S folder.  Regardless of what happened, how do I do?  I checked my profile and have all THE permissions granted.

"Documents and Settings" is a junction Point; no access.

  • Access denied on a "documents and settings" folder in windows 7 with administrator rights

I get access denied on the ' c: \documents and settings "in windows 7 with administrator rights.  The icon shows a small lock on the (very cute) folder. Permissions indicate full control to the folder. I can only access the contents of the folder by adding it to the library folder. The computer is fairly recent and is very near of the original factory. Unlike my precious computers I left it mostly original except for the odd new program. I never really noticed when it pops up as I was getting used to format windows 7 and thought that it must be "the new way" to 7 " The disk has been partitioned by Asus, which significantly added to the confusion. Now I think that it why documents and settings would be in the same folder anyway?  What is a level administrator uber folder? Any ideas greatly appreciated.

"Documents and Settings" are not a folder - it's a junction Point.

It is there to allow legacy applications using the latest Windows 7 folder structure.

There is nothing in what you can use.

  • Why is the 'Documents and Settings' folder hidden and inaccessible?

I used PC backup for backing up my XP files.  When I restore the files on my Windows 7 computer, I tried to bring it back to the "C:\Users\name\Desktop\test".  There is now a "Documents and Settings" folder hidden and inaccessible in my "C:\Users\name\Desktop\test".  How can I view/delete this folder?

Short answer:  Because there isn't actually.  Please do not try to access it, you will help break your operating system if you try, and you will lose the ability to run several programs or worse.

    Why?  The tale:
The Documents and Settings folder does not really exist in Windows 7.  This is only to fool the bad programs by redirecting to the right place (the Users folder).  Apparently he also deceived you.  It is not a real issue, do not try to access it.

Or if you prefer, here's the long Version:
First of all, the Documents and Settings folder came into existence in Windows 2000.  In order to shorten the path name (there is a limit to how many long letters we) as well as to create other languages of the operating system for use throughout the world, this folder has been renamed a few users in 2006 with the release of Windows Server and Windows Vista.
Programs built the right way, that is not the real name or spelling (or language) of the book by fine user path, because they use the variable %UserProfile%.  However, many programs have been built the wrong way.  They are absolutely dependent on the existence of a folder called "Documents and Settings", spelled in English.  This program will crash if they do not find the file they want.  So to keep these plant program, Microsoft has created a record of false (called a junction Point) that redirects these programs on the folder of the user.  So if a program think he saved a file in c:\documents and settings\joe\desktop- the file will actually be saved to c:\users\joe\desktop.  The program never knows that he cheated.
What you need to do:  Go to your Folder Options, tell him to Hide protected operating system files, and then use your computer normally.
  • Username in Documents and Settings folder

I would like to change the user name that appears in the Documents and settings folder so that I can give the computer without leaving behind my ID.  I used Microsoft web support to change the registered user name, but it has not changed the name of the folder of the subject.  Is there a way to do this?

Go in Panel > user accounts and create a new account with computer administrator privileges.  Then restart the computer, log into the new account, go to Panel > user accounts and delete your old account.

There is no real record, is a junction point.

Install Link Shell Extension and select the C:\Users folder as source and create a junction Point and give him the Documents and Settings name.

In reality, there is no such folder, it is only there as a "hard link" (redirect) as a way to "trick" the bad programs that would otherwise break.  Please don't try to mess with this file (it must be well hidden), if you change, applications that are programmed to search for a "Documents and Settings" folder will fail.

    In Windows Vista user profiles

In Windows XP, 2000, 2003, user profiles are stored in c:\Documents and Settings. In Windows Vista, the profiles are now stored in c:\Users. You will see a folder c:\Documents and Settings in Windows Explorer in Vista, but you will also notice the shortcut icon on the folder, and you will not be able to access this folder. c:\Documents and Settings is now a junction Point. You can use the random dir command to see where c:\Documents and Settings point to or use the table below.

The following table lists the old profile path and the new path under Windows Vista.

  • All Windows XP Documents and Settings folder names caps

We use XP in a business environment. Recently, we have noticed that some user in "Documents and Settings" folders on a particular machine have changed randomly to be appointed with all caps. This causes problems with their profiles. What could have caused this?

In addition, some files have changed to say the username followed by a point and our domain name. Do not know what is happening. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Windows keeps cases in the names of files and folders, but when you access to files and folders, it is case-insensitive (i.e. upper/lower case is not serious).

Records of the changing profile of user name directly to a username followed by a point and a domain name, on the other hand, comes following a corrupt user profile.  Corrupted user profiles usually occur as a result of (or comes from) the corruption of the file system.  Corruption of system files may result in the capitalization of the problems that you notice.  To recover a corrupted user profile, choose your method of the following:

"How to recover damaged Windows XP user profile"

"Windows XP problems if your profile is corrupted"

"How to copy data from a corrupted to a new profile in Windows XP user profile"

As file system corruption is very marked, you must also perform a check disk (chkdsk) operation with the "/ R" or "Repair" option to ensure that your file system is in good shape:

Because windows is so smart and "documents and settings is not a folder more", it won't let me access my old Vista documents and settings folder that is bloody well a real folder. Hello Qtermile14.

In Windows Vista, the Documents and Settings folder is not a real file.  It's just a junction for compatibility, that is why its hidden.  Your files are now living in the users folder. Hello

Since Windows XP, in the last several versions of Windows, there are many changes for the names and locations of some Windows system folders .

To ensure compatibility with older programs, these older cases have been replaced by The junction Points. A junction Point is designed to redirect programs more alumni who are hard coded to look for the former name of folder for the new file name and the location in Windows.

An example is the C:\Documents and Settings folder. The new name and the location of this folder is C:\Users. In Windows 8, you will see a folder C:\Documents and Settings , but it should be noted that this record contains a shortcut arrow on the folder icon. He identifies it as a junction.

Junction points all than its guarantee of value everyone = access denied.

Note: Do not attempt to modify the security settings on a junction. This can cause programs to stop work and possibly corrupt the file system.

Let us know if you have any other questions.
