Access denied when you try to edit BOOT. INI.

I was using Norton Ghost to clone a drive for one of my clients.  The clone has failed for some reason any.  After powered my system down to remove the two discs I was working with my system turns on no longer.  I get the NTOSKRNL. EXE missing error.  I decided to take my hard drive to another computer to check the boot.ini file.  The other system is Windows 7.  I get ACCESS DENIED when I United Arab Emirates, the attrib command to reset the attributes S & H.  I have to take ownership of the file.  Can someone help me?

Why don't put you your XP drive afflicted and fix it using the XP Recovery Console?

The situation is usually very simple to solve without moving from your HARD drive to another computer - and how you can fix this if you didn't have another computer to move to-reinstall XP from scratch or 'try' a repair installation?   If you had any XP installation CD?  (The Uuless Ghost FUBAR had somehow your Windows installation)

You don't have a Recovery Console CD?  Make one following the instructions on this link:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic276527.html

If the NTOSKRNL. EXE is really missing, or even suspect, that's just replace it by using the Recovery Console.  It is in many other places on your HARD drive - just copy in a replacement and be on your way.

If you have doubts about your boot.ini, just rename or delete (rename boot.ini.bak boot.ini).  XP doesn't have a boot.ini file to start in a general single partition configuration.  It will complain, but still boot without one if all the other pieces are in place.  Your question of the NTOSKRNL. EXE missing error is unlikely to have anything to do with the boot.ini anyway, but you can try things if you wish.

If you want to take the right of a folder/file on a drive that has been moved to another computer, to implement this article:

http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/308421

I know not if attrib works the same in Windows 7, but XP, you type a command as the start, run or from a command prompt:

attrib - shr c:\boot.ini

It would be 'less' (remove) the attributes system, hidden and read-only.

Here's a boot.ini file General who can help as an example, or after the content of yours, and we can take a look.

    Hi JlaHills,

Make sure that you are logged as administrator and check if you are faced with the question.

Try to take possession of a disc and check whether the problem is resolved.

To take ownership of a drive:

    1. click on the drive that you want to take control and then click Properties.
    2. click on the Security tab, click Advanced, and then click the owner tab.
    3. click on modify.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    4. click on the name of the person you want to give to the property.
    5. If you want this person to be the owner of the files and subfolders in this folder, select the Replace owner of subcontainers and objects to check.
    6. click on OK.

If this does not work, I suggest you to activate the administrator account built in and check if it works.

An administrator account is a user account which allows you to make changes that will affect other users. Administrators can change security settings, install software and hardware, and access all files on the computer. Administrators can also make changes to other user accounts.

If you are logged in as administrator, then I suggest you turn on the built in user account and check if it works.

In Windows Vista, the built-in Administrator account is disabled by default. In previous versions of Windows, an administrator account was created automatically during Out-of-Box-Experience (OOBE) with a blank password.

An account administrator with a blank password is a security risk. To better protect the system, the built-in Administrator account is disabled by default in all new installations and upgrades of Windows Vista.

I get "access denied" when you try to add the 4543BD to my diagram. This component has been added since a previous version. I use Multisim version 12.0.0 student edition.

    Hi Diarra,

I checked my database and the 4543 isn't in the student edition. If you open a drawing that was created in a version more recent as the education edition and copied the part to your database, when you place this part, you will get the access denied message.

Attached is a diagram with the part, you can open it and build you circuit around it.

  • Photoshop cs4 access denied when you try to install from disk in Windows 7 64 bit.

Photoshop cs4 access denied when you try to install from disk in Windows 7 64 bit. I tried in

safe mode and it starts to install, but get an error there as well.

    What should I do?

So when you put the disk in it does not work properly? When the disc is inserted, you should have a window pop up with 2 options. 1. install and another to see what is on the disk. Choose to open the disc or explore. Navigate to the folder where is the photoshop CS4 .exe file (which runs the Setup program), right-click on the .exe file and choose Run as administrator and it should start. See if it will install. If this isn't the case, then read below.

I don't know how long you got in the installation until so chances are, you will need to run the CS4 Cleanup utility. 2 levels to run but do not use 1 or 2 just type number 3.

    http://www.Adobe.com/support/contact/cs4clean.html

You may need to run the utility windows install cleanup too

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/290301

Before you try to reinstall the software make sure that adobe reader is not installed. If it is delete. It has caused problems in the past with vista and CS4 installs.

You can also disable windows Defender and all antivirus software. You can keep UAC Windows 7.

When installing CS4 to 90 percent, it stops almost and may take 5 to 10 minutes at the end. It's normal. What a pain huh...

After the installation is complete, restart

After restarting, go to the icon of CS4 64-bit or 32-bit (depends on 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7) in the starting area, right-click on CS4 64-bit (if you have windows 7 64 bit), and then choose Properties, Compatibility tab, and then check run as administrator at the lower part. Hit apply, ok to finish.

Now, run CS4 and run the update.

  • Windows 7: error 5 (access denied) when you try to start the Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) service

System: Win 7 Ultimate x 64 on a HP Pavilion DV6. My account is the user account only suitable on the laptop and an administrator account.

When you try to do a system restore, it came with an error that the Volume Shadow Copy Service did not work, even if this error code is not relevant for the purposes of this question later, I managed to run the system restore in SafeMode to an old restore point...

When you try to turn on VSS, I checked services.msc (which I ran as administrator) and VSS was off and on the manual. I tried clicking on start, the following error message came:

"Windows didn't start the Volume shadow copy on the Local computer service."
Error 5: access is denied. »

I then switched to automatic and tried again, same error. I tried since everything I can possibly think (including the definition of back and forth between manual & auto then trying the solutions below) to get the service starts, nothing helps. The solutions tried so far:

-net start vss high cmd - returns the same error (error 5 access is denied)
    -high vssvc.exe cmd - same
-changed the full control permissions for me, the group admin and NETWORK SERVICE (that I had to add) to the System32 folder and vssvc.exe but no change
-changed the permissions to full control for myself, admin and NETWORK SERVICE group (who even once, I must add) for VSS in regedit (open as administrator) still nothing
-even tried to restart explorer.exe a high cmd and a task manager high and again made the permissions - still nothing.

The only thing I haven't done is run a sfc scan, but tbh, I doubt that will fix anything. It also seems that VSS has been turned off for a while, as my last restore point was about 3 months ago and I installed things since.

Any suggestions/ideas would be appreciated, because I'm going nuts with that now! Thank you!

The Volume Shadow Copy Service must not be on auto-start.

According to the site TechNet Microsoft VSS THAT was introduced with Windows XP SP1 and since that time it has always installed as manual start since he does not need to be started automatically and it works day and night to do nothing.  Some places say different times when VSS has been introduced, but be sure that it was a long time ago.

A popular site to see how Windows Services should / could be put in place is here:

    http://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/

If you've read about VSS on Microsoft TechNet, it says:

    https://TechNet.Microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh125927 (v = ws.10) .aspx

So do you think the MS TechNet site is fake and that each installation of Windows since XP has a badly installed VSS Service?  If that were the case all Windows systems in the world would be in trouble.

On an unafflicted system if you open the services applet and observe the VSS Service, it should look like this:

So if you start a backup operation or even create a Restore Point, go back to the Service applet and press F5 to refresh you'll see that the VSS Service changed its status to start:

Once the operation is complete the VSS Service will stop itself (it may take a while).

That's how it is supposed to work.

We should certainly be able to affect the automatic VSS Service and you should be able to start, but you shouldn't need to.  People who say that "solved their problem" forgets to mention the days/weeks to try things that lead to get their system of work.  There is no way of knowing which of the dozens of things that they could have tried really solved the problem.

You say that the system restore worked in Mode safe (but not a normal startup) and if it is true that means usually something to load in a normal trunk causing a problem and that something is usually an antivirus/antimalware application that is 'protect' your system against the changes.  When you start mode safe these things are usually not loaded this is why sometimes your system restore mode without failure.

Contributors known for these programs are Norton, McAfee, Avast, Avira, Kaspersky and probably others.

So what antivirus/antimalware programs you are running and have checked their support pages for known problems with backup/restore system restore?

Norton has even a page about these issues:

    https://support.Norton.com/SP/en/us/home/current/solutions/v51118464_EndUserProfile_en_us

Even McAfee told their product to uninstall completely before doing a system restore:

"Intel Security recommends that you remove McAfee security products before to proceed with an upgrade of the operating system or the Microsoft System Restore and then re-install your McAfee product when the update/restore is complete. "

So I assumed that whatever your AV program happens to be could be part of the issue here - but we don't know what it is.

We know error 5 is a permissions/access denied error type, but you shouldn't make adjustments to get VSS to start if something is wrong.  If as you have tried adjustments have been necessary every Windows system in the world should also make these adjustments and coming is not past.

Of course, now, your system might be more affected since you've been changing permissions on the things trying to VSS to start when there is probably not a problem with VSS in the first place, so who knows what condition are in now.

You could start by uninstalling what your AV software (most manufacturers have a special program for that) and by eliminating third-party applications that are known to interfere.  You can always reinstall them again later, no?

    Hi David,

I suggest you scan the computer antivirus using the Microsoft Safety Scanner.

Microsoft safety scanner will help us to get rid of software viruses, spyware and other malicious software.

The Microsoft Security Scanner is a downloadable security tool for free which allows analysis at the application and helps remove viruses, spyware and other malware. It works with your current antivirus software.

    http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

    Note:

    1) the Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To restart a scan with the latest definitions of anti-malware, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

    2) if you run the virus scan of the program which is infected with the virus will be deleted. Therefore, reinstall the program. Also, if files and folders are affected by the virus, while they might even get deleted.

Hope this information helps. Answer the post with an up-to-date issue report to help you further.

  • Built in Administrator - "access denied" when you try to install the drivers

I have a problem with the built in Administrator account. I connect as administrator and try to install a device and the driver and get failure because of "access denied." It's probably NEVER supposed to happen because the administrator is supposed to have TOTAL control over everything. To be clear, I am NOT as a user with administrative privileges.

The installed operating system is Windows 7 Enterprise edition and was part of a domain, but is now independent. I hope that all field controls have been removed, but these should not affect the functioning of the administrator in terms of right at all?

Relocation is not really an option because we cannot save data - because the device driver for the external hard drive can not be installed - Access denied.

Someone should be able to help! I'm desperate!

    Hello

I have a thin client HP 5740e and for some reason any local user account requires a password change.  Yet, when I try to change the password it says access denied.  And yet, I can't it to allow me to move to another counts as administrator to open a session.  I held down the SHIFT key during startup, but it always goes straight to this local user account & the expired password prompt. I'm stuck in an infinite loop and do not know how to cope.  Safe mode puts me in the same situation.  And I can't update the BIOS because I can't have everything.

OS = Windows Embedded Standard 7

I also tried to reinstall the last image of the HP Web site using a USB key, but it fails every time. I tried 2 different USB drives with the same exact error no each.

Image, try to install = SP56020

    Does anyone have a suggestion?

I finally could get as an administrator using RDP to my office.  I didn't know the name of thin client lacked a figure, that's why I've been unsuccessful before that.

Once I got away, I could watch the local user account permissions.  Now I see what was wrong.
