Accidentally updated my copy of Windows XP from SP2 to SP3. Is this legal?

original title: upgrade WIndows XP error!

I had windows xp edition SP2 family and my friend decided to upgrade using an illegal copy of windows xp service pack 3, is there anyway I can return to my legal version or be able to activate the one I have.

Thank you

Well, it's not really illegal to install windows on windows.

in other words, let's say your computer preinstalled with windows sp2 came.

then you went to the store and bought windows sp3 and sp2 installed.

the scenario would not be illegal, but it would be a waste of money.

Therefore, if the sp3 of windows that is installed on your system has not been activated on another computer 'or' it was turned off from the other computer, which is uninstalled, then use it on another computer is not illegal.

personally, I have not seen the above scenario so my entry is somewhat limited.   but the good side of things is that if your sp3 windows is activated and can update microsoft servers, then you're ok.

on the good side of things, now you have a bootable xp sp3 cd which can be handy for repairing the operating system if necessary in the future.

in the meantime, don't make any more changes to your system or try to undo what you have now.

First, confirm or not if windows sp3 is still active on another computer or has it been uninstalled from him.

In addition, you may be able to simply replace the new product key with your first.

Take a look at this Web page and look under the tab for xp:

Support for WinXP will end in April 2014, but existing support is for only XP SP3.

I just had to reload windows and my installation disc contains only Win XP SP2. It has a link to SP 3 to www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24 , but it says that the update of the single computer use the Auto updates. This creates a problem t when you have only SP2 you cannot use auto update for SP3 because SP2 is no longer supported!  When I use the automatic update it does not download anything at the programmed time.  If I try to manually connect to update, it is said that SP2 is trying to connect to the page is not found.

  • Disable a copy of windows 8 from a computer now broken

Hello world. I have a biggest HTPC computer that serves me very well for the last 4 years. Unfortunately, some liquid cooling filter to one of the radiators in the case and destroyed the motherboard and processor. I've since replaced these components by modern coins (the upgrade was quite important). I wiped windows 8 a number of times and installed again wiping the hard drive, windows installation 7, the upgrade to windows 8 and finally to 8.1 (Yes, very round point). In this case, I also had to remove the partition completely from hard drive using diskpart to get the windows installation cd install correctly, so I guess it has something to do with it. Is it possible to disable the key entirely so that it can be reused?

There is no real deactivation procedure, just reactivate by phone:

    1. press the Windows key + X , and then clickrun, and then type: slui.exe 4

    2. then press the ENTER"" key.

    3. Select your "country" in the list.

    4. choose the option "activate phone".

    5. stay on the phone (do not select/press all options) and wait for a person to help you with the activation.

    6. explain your problem clearly to the support person.

Consequetly, I decided to upgrade to the full system with a new hard drive. The point is xp will activate on the new system? If this is not the case, then what I have to do? Did microsoft give me new key? I have all the invoice documents, product key, the original cd

original title: xp will activate on the new system?

If everything you change is the hard drive, you should have no problem of reactivation of the new facility.

If your 'upgrade' includes a new motherboard, and then it depends if the XP you bought is a detail, an or an OEM one – if the retail trade, you may simply need to activate by phone.

If the XP license you purchased is OEM, you cannot transfer it to a new motherboard except under the conditions of warranty replacement.

This is a rare error message (I remember only see him once before), and it may take some time to solve problems.

The best is to start with probably a base chkdsdsk and sfc...

Wait for that analysis at the end - make a note of any error messages - and then restart.

I have a laptop that I upgraded to MS Windows 8. Now that I decided to sell my laptop I want to use this copy of Windows 8 on my desk. Is this possible. Can I uninstall it from the laptop and then install it on my desktop using the same product ID.

Also, on the laptop can I downgrade it to Windows 7.

You can transfer the license to another computer as long as remove you it from the current computer, on which it is installed. You can do this by reinstalling the original supplied with your laptop license. If the laptop is originally shipped with Windows 7, then you can reinstall it. If this isn't the case, decommissioning options are only available to the delivered computers pre-loaded with Windows 8 Pro OEM factory, no upgrade of retail licenses.

Once you have reinstalled the original license, you can proceed with the upgrade of the desktop computer and reactivate it by phone.

    1. press the Windows key + X , and then clickrun, and then type: slui.exe 4

    4. choose the option "activate phone".

  • An illegal copy of Windows XP can be upgraded to Windows 7?

First of all, some context to information.

About six months ago, I bought a Samsung netbook for the brother of my friend who lives in Thailand. The machine came with a genuine copy of Windows 7 Home Premium. In fact, I paid extra for having him on level compared to the Starter edition to Home Premium.

Unfortunately, it is a perfect beginner and despite my insistence that he executed regularly AV scan, the computer has been infected with malicious software and became unusable.

Since he had not made a backup he could restore the OS from, he took the machine to a local repair shop. Instead of tackling the problem, store deleted the installation of Win 7 (without contact with the user) and replaced by what I suspect to be an illegal copy of Windows XP Edition family. I say this because it does not display the Windows logo on startup, but rather a nice picture showing a number of ads.

As the original operating system can no longer be recovered even if the machine is still under warranty, I am looking to upgrade to Windows 7 Starter. I'm not going to waste money on Home Premium this time well that as a lesson to the user to take over maintenance of the machine in the future.

However, given that the current installation is probably an illegal copy of Windows XP, my question is, he will still qualify an upgrade?

Samsung will quite happily sell you a set of reocvery for the original operating system disks - and you should have the means of the provider to be able to upgrade the system again (it's an Express upgrade, probably) - you can call if you are unsure. There should be the key in the paperwork that accompanies the machine (if it includes also a bunch of disk)

You can borrow an external DVD drive? (or buy one - they should be available for less than $30-40).

Samsung may have recovery located on a Flash drive - ask them.
