• How to migrate to Cluster SQL in SQL virtual server or Virtual Cluster SQL

  Currently we will attempt to migrate a SQL (2 systems) cluster in virtual environment.  We followed the requirements with the Consolidation of Vmware tool and IO meter to ensure that our guests have enough resources to accomidate this.  All the coming of metrics return looks like it will work very well virtulized that the cluster was just for purposes of failover in any case and not for purproses performance.  That said, a few questions have concocted.

  (1.) that is - that the best way to virtulize or convert (P2V)

  -Should we just create a new Virtual Machine and install the same version of SQL and do a manual migration to the new SQL Server and leave as 1 SQL server with the HA

  - Or is there a way to P2V this kind of a Setup? If so what are the steps?

  2.) If a P2V is possible, I was under the impression you will need to use a mapping of RAW for hard drives otherwise that the cluster does not work?  Can someone talk about this? as I'm sure I've clustered windows Server2008 without mapping RAW before, but not with SQL

  I had to convert several clusters of SQL in VMs. Unfortunately, it is not possible to do a P2V on a cluster node. At least is not that I have ever found. It ends up being a new generation. This can be a major problem; However, it can be a blessing because it could allow a fresh server.

  Looking to take a physical cluster and a new VM cluster? In our environment, we used clustering to protect against the failure of the server. With HA, the problem goes away. So we actually converted all of our non-clustered VMS clusters. Your host dies, it has automatically restarted on another host. It does not protect against comments software problems, but this is not what we were clustering. Do you really need to come together in a virtual machine? Something to consider.

  Does anyone have advice for locating vCenter in a cluster, when his services are not running?

  I am trying to create a script for the release of all the virtual machines that fall within a range of IP addresses and exit the VM name, IP address and the Virtual Cluster of machine is hosted in. I've got so far as to the release of the name of VM and IP, but can't seem to get the cluster to work. I can't find an expression for an attribute of Cluster in Get-View. Does anyone know how to complete it? Or maybe another way to go about this?

  Two windows 2008 R2 SQL virtual cluster nodes with RDM is supported only for the IPC or Cluster In a Box that is to say if the two virtual machines reside on the same host ESXi. The same configuration is not supported for the cabin or Cluster across boxes (virtual machines running on different hosts ESXi).

• Physical/virtual MSCS & vMotion

  So, I've spent the last few days search and document clustering options in vSphere 5.  I came to understand the warnings and limits with each type of save this:

  Are the vMotion & DRS valid limits in a MSCS physical-virtual 2008 r2 cluster?  All documents and forums I read set out clearly the purely virtual cluster cannot be vMotioned manually (although it doesn't seem to work if a host goes down), but I don't see anything that indicates the same when a physical host is the mixture.

  Can someone clarify the situation?  Of course, I'll be testing in a lab environment but wanted further clarification before submitting this project from design to management.

  The virtual SCSI adapter must still be in the bus, sharing mode, which prevents from vMotion.

  I'm trying to filter for alerts from the Virtual Machine to the user interface in the emailFilter.xml.

  Ideally I would like to filter by other measures such as the ready % CPU or the CPU usage or some other metrics, but in the meantime just try to isolate the Virtual Machine.

  We run ESXi 5.0 U1, and I am having a strange problem with virtual machines in our ERP/SAP environment.  I went to expand one of the virtual disks, and after you enter the new value and press OK, close the virtual machine.  It was not a graceful shut down, there was no warning.  I got was the following error message:

  An error occurred by restarting the virtual machine after taking a snapshot. The virtual machine will be turned off.

  We do not use snapshots of VMware on this machine, or others like him.  The virtual machine itself is a Windows 2008 R2 system, running Microsoft Cluster.  We have several RDM attached phys compatibility mode, and they are shared with one other, configured identicially, VM.  Here are some details more details of the task:

  Is it possible to create a virtual "san"? reason why I ask is that I want to replicate our environment but don't want to have any impact on the existing san. Am not bothered about how much space is available on this virtual san that I only need a relatively small amount for the test I need to do. Is this possible? I also want to set up a virtual cluster too and use shared then records it would be useful to know how to do it also in a virtual environment. I tried just setting up a disk full and then try to use that as a shared drive, but was getting "unable to lock" messages file so guessing about this, I'm going the wrong way...

  Configuration should be the same as the documentation does not watch any related configuration of microsoft, only the configuration of the VM. I'm sure that there is no official documentation on HR clustering configuration, but if you need a shared storage, you can go with this one.
