Adding adapter HBA

I added an HBA LSI9280 adapter that is installed to a server RD 530. I already had a Raid of LSI9240 card on the system for integrated readers. I also used the LSI Mega RAID management software. I wasn't sure if it I'm missing something or do I see the new map 9280 on the server? I enclose the 9280 a new SA120, which I also do not see at this stage. Would it be possible that the new configuration is not connected correctly?

Or is it a plugin go type installation?

It seems that riser was the question. I changed my 4 ports NICcard and my hba... and my HBA worked perfectly... While my NETWORK card was not after slot machines. I have a new riser card on the way.

  • Added a HBA & LUN to one node of a cluster;   HBA LUN, but is LUN unavailable for a new VMFS datastore

We have two servers ESXi V4 in a HA/DRS cluster, with each of them having a FC HBA and access to the same database unique.  The cluster is managed by vCenter 5.5.0

I added a second FC HBA to one of these servers, and after reboot the HBA sees the LUN very well.  But when I go to add the new storage, there is none is available.

    I'm trying this via: vCenter-> select host-> configuration-> storage-> storage-> add StorageType = disk/Lun

My plan was to have a virtual machine on a server, which would have access to the new data store for a backup repository.   I had the intention to have the virtual machine locked to this server and I didn't expect any HA migration etc.

Now, I get the feeling that this asymmetry of storage in a cluster is not supported.  Any ideas?

    Thank you... Lyle

    > I added a second FC HBA to one of these servers...

I guess you meant that you added another logic unit number! This LUN did not previously contain other data, i.e. a partition table for another system of file/partition type? In some cases, you may need to disable this 'old' front of partition tables to create a GUI data store. In other cases it can work when you use the vSphere Client and connect to the host directly to create the data store.

  • The fact to unplug cable adapter HBA on the ESXI host causing VI Client to hang

We use HP DL380 G5 with the embedded HP version (ESX 3.5i U3 + latest patch)

This server has all of the available features available (HA, DRS etc..) The server has 2 EMC QLogic 2340 HBA with the latest EMC firmware in it.

If I look in the VCenter in a disk storage properties it shows me 4 available for SP on our SAN paths. (all MRU settings. we have SAN active/passive)

Now, here's the problem we have:

As soon as I unplug the fibrecable, the Vcenter must use another active path. It looks like this, the VM Machines are continue to operate, but only after a new analysis of the hba it also shows that the 2 paths are broken

But when I close the VI Client and run it then the problems begin:

    • Machines of VM loses connections (rattling irregular and after awhile not available)

    • Customer VI freezes and does not

In the end, I have reconnected the fibrecable (because each time I start the VI Client it crashes) all problems disappeared and everything works again.

If I then take a look at the Machines-VM BSOD some are, some have the writeback failed

Disconnect a fibrecable shall not give any disruption, that's why we have redundant HBA. But it does!

    Anyone have any suggestions?

HBA QLogic VMkernel pilots understand firmware which (actually) hot-loaded on the HBA driver support.

    See http://communities.vmware.com/message/325181#325181

So, don't bother with the HBA firmware level.

See the latest "Fibre Channel SAN Configuration Guide.

page 99: setting the time-out HBA to failover (value qlport_down_retry)

    Good luck.

  • Number of targets for a storage HBA adapter?

I'm setting up the connections of storage host as below is to say each HBA host with 2 connected to FC switch, which in turn connects to the storage as below: -.

    Storage connection.png

Now if I select the host & go to Configuration-> storage adapters-> select an HBA.

I can understand the number of paths, it is double since via adapter HBA selected, I have two paths for each data store.

    Storage.JPG

But why target number is 4, even if via this selected HBA adapter there are only 2 paths by the data store and not 4 paths?

Don't forget that we select one of THEM, so logically it would the target number according to the targets available via this HBA adapter only

If you have two storage arrays with both SPS on each storage array, then you will have 4 targets:

Target 1 - Bay storage 1-1 storage processor

Target 2 - Bay storage 1-2 storage processor

Target 3 - Bay storage 2-1 storage processor

    Goal 4 - Bay storage 2 - storage processor 2

  • With the help of ESXi 5.5 with storage controller HP DL120 Gen9 (HP H240 FIO active host Bus Adapter)

Hi guys, I'm new to virtualization, but I couldn't find a solution for this. Feel free to correct my text because I'm not very experienced with this sort of thing.

Background: I have a couple of servers and the end of the game will be left to create a San and run other systems within this SAN (providing network-level RAID). While in one data center I could decides to make a RAID at the level of the material in addition to RAID level network, now I want to save money on storage for this test so I want to do simple split disks (RAID/JBOD) at the hardware level. Because of the OS, we will virtualize later we use ESXi 5.5, 6.0 not.

In fact, I had a small server supermicro I already installed ESXi 5.5 on that doesn't have lots of storage which will be the 3rd Member voting left.

So I put the 2 servers (HP ProLiant DL120 Gen9 E5-2630v3 8 GB-R H240 8SFF 550W PS entry Server (777425-B21)) and I went into the BIOS/CMOS settings mode AHCI Mode smart-table (I don't remember the wording of it, I'm not in front of the machine). Then I went in the smart supply and went to the intelligent storage administrator part and I had to select "disable the RAID", or something like that. After the reboot, I went back and now my two drives appear as "Unassigned" which seemed reasonable to me. I tried to see if I could 'assign' but in mode no RAID, there is no means to assign what whatsoever because the paintings exist not primarily in mode non-RAID. I was not sure if there is a way to "initialize" them or something like that, but I couldn't find the parameters like this. My hope was that a BONE would now see these drives natively as a simple readers without the layer of abstraction to a storage controller.

This does not work and when I run ESXi 5.5 from a USB it will boot, but when it gets to the part where you are supposed to select the ESXi installation disc on it only shows the USB itself and none of my SSD.

Does anyone know how to configure the adapter HBA H240 with ESXi 5.5? I could really use some help from someone who has done this before.

    Thanks for any help!

I thought her guy after a few hours of playing with it. I had to pull on the site of HP storage controller driver and group with the ISO (I used experience before VMware: ESXi-Customizer). After having done that, I am sure that AHCI (instead of HP Dynamic Smart Array RAID) has been activated (in the configuration of the BIOS) and disabled by RAID in the HPSSA (intelligent storage administrator). Then, I could see the SSD in the ESXi 5.5.

Jürgen Vervoort, ESXi 5.5 does not recognize the SSD when I had the active RAID and configured 1 table for each disk (make an effective JBOD). I also tried a single RAID 0 array with two SSDS inside and ESXi does not always detect them. I think that the underlying issue is that the driver is not supported natively by 5.5 ESXi. Right now I'm sure that if I went and configured RAID this would work because the storage controller driver is loaded in ESXi.

In any case, I hope this will help others with the same issues.

  • Which model # HBA Qlogic card for my ESX 3.5 environment

Is - this true only Qlogic are supported and if so what model should I look for in buying?

I want to add this adapter HBA to a HP DL380 G5.

    Hello

No, this is not true. VMware ESX supports many different HBA providers.

Something like this http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/pciehbaql/index.html, I have used it before on the DL380 G5.

You can visit this link and do a search on the different supported HBA http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?q=VMware%20ESX%203.5%20HBA%20compatibility&btnG=Google%20Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=

  • 3 TB internal hard drives

    Hello

Currently, I have a HP Pavilion Elite HPE - 480 t custom Desktop PC, bought in November 2010, with the Intel Core i7 - 960 image [3.2 GHz, 1 MB L2 + 8 MB memory cache shared N3], 12 GB of SDRAM DDR3 at 1 066 MHz [6 DIMMs], with two 1.5 to 7200 tr / min SATA 3 Gb/s hard drives, running Windows 7. The main drive hosting the operating system and all software. The secondary drive is strictly used for storage.

I want to replace the secondary 1.5 TB drive with the WD Caviar Green 3 TB used strictly drive as a storage device.

With my setup, this possible since the WD Caviar Green 3 TB hard drive comes with a 'Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) - compatible adapter (HBA) Host Bus, in the form of a PCI Express add - card'? My computer will recognize the larger capacity disk, and it will recognize with a full load of storage?

I tried the Seagate 3TO and it did not work at all. But with the addition of WD card, which will make the difference? Or should I abandon the idea altogether and get another external drive, I really don't want to do? And I don't want to spend the money if it does not work.

    Hello

Thissectionof Western Digital review on large capacity HDDs.

Update the Intel storage controller drivers from Intel web site before installing the new hard drive.  Version 10.6 seems to be later.

The Seagate hard drive should have worked unless it was defective.  Check with Seagate to get advice on the use of the solution of DiscWizard .

Some of the latest technology of format (AF) drives hard advanced use may cause some files in particular situations.  Contact the manufacturer to see if any of the conditions apply to your situation before installing the hard drive.

  • Xserve RAID - easy to use stand-alone unit

Is it possible to use a unit of Xserve RAID just by himself plugged into a mac (e.g. Mac Pro) via ethernet or require a Xserve in fact as an interface between the table and the Mac?

    Thank you.

It will not work as long as a unit of storage/registration to access the data via a ethernet cable. You use the cable for using RAID admin administration. An XServe RAID to work its intended such as data storage and first-time buyers, will require a compatible Fibre Channel host bus adapter (HBA) or Fibre Channel switch. You don't need a server hardware dedicated as an XServe or any other thing that would be considered a server such as a Windows Server. Any Mac or PC with an installed compatible Fibre Channel card will do.

The XServe RAID unit is a class of units RAID, called also directly Attached Storage or DAS. It is not a network (NAS) RAID storage unit.

  • Topology of Nexus 5 k / FCoE extending between 2 campus

    Hello

I need help to answer the following questions related to the interconnection of 2 campuses (top and bottom in the attached diagram) using the ports of FCoE Nexus 5 K:

    Please check the attached topology.

    QUESTIONS RELATING TO THE:

    Multi-hop FCoE:

    ·         The link (10G, SFP +) between pairs of N5k, interconnecting 2 campuses, carry FCoE traffic (Ethernet and FC on the same link):

    ·         Can servers with the adapters of the ANC in the lower Campus, store access the CF in the upper Campus?

    ·         Can the server with HBA FC adapters in the lower Campus, store access the CF in the upper Campus?

    ·         Can expand us the tissue 2fc between the 2 sites using this link of FCoE?

    ·         This link can carry the traffic of Ethernet between 2 LANs (between Upper and Lower campus)

    Thank you.

It is therefore 3km for FCoE traffic. "but in the case of traffic FC (via FCoE)(, ce que je veux dire si nous avons deles de serveurs avec deles de adaptateurs HBA FC dans le Campus inférieur, accès àle stockage FC dans le Campus supérieur) binding, is it always 3 km limitation? or less?

-> 3 km, independent how the initiators and targets are connected. (Limitation is for a single jump of FCoe)

About using the native CF option to extend this link (of course withouth ethernet), to go for an MDS switch? or module of the simple use of the CF to the Nexus 5 k 2?

-> You can do it directly using CF Module if you run the N5K in switching mode (not in NPV Mode)

do you have a referral link, mentioning these distances?

-> Sorry I also had this information via Cisco SE

  • VSAN, MDS, areas... and many doubs

    Hello

After reading lots of documentation, I'm very confuse and it is very difficult for me to do a picture in my head of how this work.

For example. I have a table of storage, 2 MDS 9148 and 3 servings (independent, no blades) with 2 HBAS each. Each HBA has 2fc ports of 8G each.

So on the final configuration, each server will have own OS ESX and virtual machines, all within the storage Bay (serves him didn't have HDs).

Topology of connection: I have 2 MDS for redundancy. So I guess that's Connect ports FC 2 (combination mode) from the server to each MDS switch. But what I need to connect 2 MDS using an ISL trunk?

Design VSAN. VSAN is as VLAN but what are the criteria that I should follow to assign VSAN? A VSAN by ESX and the other by virtual machines. Or a VSAN by MDS switch, server...

Area, pwwn and nwwn: if I understand correctly. nwwn is the address of my adapter HBA and the MDS and the pwwn is an address of each port on the HBA and SDM.  But dissing the areas, what are the criteria?

And finally. The Vswitch on the sphere and on the storage array logical unit number. they have their own pwwn? Can I assign them to areas?

    Thank you very much.

    Best regards

    Check figure 4 of the

    http://www.Cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/interfaces-modules/Stor...

you do not have a core - edge, but only the kernel.

All devices, storage and ESXi hosts have two hosted this 9148 2.

NO ISL links between the 2 MDS. The CF philosophy is double fabric, A and B.

You create 2 separate VSANS, for example 10 to fabric and 20 for fabric B.

    Zoning is directed by VSAN.

Single initiator - single target areas: port hba - storage controller port pwwn pwwn.

Your ESXi will then discover the FC LUNs.

VM can't see CF, they see peripheral scsi (RDM is an exception).

CF Multipathing driver may be installed on the host allowing failover and load balancing.

    See, for example.

  • What is zoing LUNs and lun masking

can someone explain ziinsog lun and masking how it's work and about multipathing.

Zoning - if you want to specify that some hosts to access a device of storage, then you would want to the zoning of the installation.

This configuration is done on the Fibre Channel switch.  iSCSI and NFS FCoE can also be segmented, but they would use typical methods of segmentation TCPIP as the implementation of a VIRTUAL LAN.

There are two types of techniques of zoning: zoning Hard and Soft zoning.

Soft zoning filter one device to another device.  However, if the ports are manually setup, the switch will not stop communication devices.  By comparison, hard zoning prevents a port to send the traffic to the other port and is safer.

Zoning can also be setup based on the port or the name WWN (World Wide).    Port zoning grants access to a port on a switch to a different port on a switch.  This would require physical security be installed around the Fiber Switch, because the areas could be changed around simply by moving the cable in the switch.  This also makes more of a struggle for management if the switches should be moved or re-cable.  WWN zoning is configured to allow access between two WWN that makes management a little easier, but is also sensitive to the WWN spoofing that could allow access to the storage device.

    Masking-

Masking of LUN is a process that makes a LUN available to some hosts and unavailable to other hosts.

LUN masking is implemented mainly at the level of the host bus adapter (HBA). Security benefits of LUN masking implemented at HBA are limited, because with multiple host bus adapters, it is possible to forge source addresses (WWNS/Mac/IPs) and compromising access. Many storage controllers also support LUN masking. LUN masking is implemented at the level of the storage controller, the controller applies access policies to the device and so it is safer. However, it is applied primarily not as a measure of safety in itself, but rather as a protection against faulty servers which can corrupt and disks belonging to other servers. For example, Windows servers connected to a San, under certain conditions, will damage the volumes non-Windows (Unix, Linux, and NetWare) on the SAN by attempting to write Windows volume labels. By hiding the other LUNS in Windows Server, this can be avoided, because the Windows Server does not realize that the other LUNS exist.

  • ESXi 5.5 can't find the local hard drive

    Hello

I ty to install ESXi 5.5 on SuperMirco X9SCL-F with adapter HBA LSI SAS 9211-4i, but installation can not find the disc hard space... can someone help me?

After bios update of MB... the problem is solved

  • Unable to assign the IP of network profiles.

    Hello

I want to activate the user select network based on the network available, chosen in PG when you set a reservation. I use XML to list outside these exchanges but facing problems with it. I use vCAC 5.2 with vSphere 5.5

The model is configured with a network adapter, keeping in mind that what ever network selected by the user would add to the provisioned VM.

    1. I am able to get the Port Group reflected in vcenter under the network section, but the setting of the virtual machine does not added adapter list. I could see Mac address associated to the Portgroup and allocated IP network profile, but I do not see these values in the VM.

2 - I custom configured VM from vCAC and added additional NIC with different portgroup who also has associated the different subnet network profile. This time I could see port group reflected in vCenter under network and also the adapter is also added to the VM, but still could not see IP address other APIPA address then. However a single IP address again responsibility network profiles that does not matter where in the VM.

have I missed something? is there an agent that must be installed on a virtual computer to enable this feature (just a wild guess! )

    Help, please!

    BR,

    MG

Yes this actually solved the problem, but it's still strange that we need to care about customization in vCenter and reference should be placed in the strategic plan, how construction profile Important in this scenario?

However, custom, property of "CloneSpec" is not required to mention under properties if you use the field 'customization Specs"of Blueprint.

This requires no installation of the Agent. It is agentless.

    Thank you

  • Vcenter VUM downgrade new drivers on the host update?

Hello, I know that the deployment of patch 1 or 2 update, etc. via the command line with VIB installs, you can control whether Update 1 will demote or keep the newer drivers, such as network cards, adapter HBA, etc..

I wonder what is the default behavior when say 5.1 to U1 by VUM? If I have a new driver from a vendor in U1 - would he kept--or demoted to what's in U1? Thank you!

I test this. And U1 will overwrite all the seller provided pilots listed as extensions of the host.
