Adding hard drives for servers

We have two HP ProLiant DL380 G6 servers, each in a RAID 5 with ESX 4 configuration.  We use vSphere on these two servers, and the controller of vSphere is 4.1.

This is a test environment, so it is not necessary to have the installation faster and more reliable.  More space most of the time is the key.

We would like to add more hard drives:

1. can you just connect the hard drives in the existing bays and let the RAID controller (restriping, etc.)?

2 if not, is our only option (if we want to keep the current VM) to back up the existing configuration of vSphere, add hard drives and rebuild the RAID array and then retrieve the data from the backup?

3. If the backup is the way forward, what recommendations do you have for vSphere backup?  Less expensive would be the way to go here (what software and what external hard drive?).

4. can you create a single Bay RAID5 on two servers instead of two RAID5 arrays separated? (I don't like this option because it only will give us 300 GB more space with less reliability, but is requested)

I searched a bit on this site and did not see much on this particular confuguration, so any help would be highly appreciated.

Thank you!

1. you can add additional disks to a RAID set, you can even change the level of RAID (if necessary) using the Configuration utility of the table (on the SmartStart CD) However, these functions are generally available on the RAID controller with BBWC (battery buffer cache).

2. you should always have a backup!

3. you can take a look at ghettoVCB

4. No, you can not extend the RAID on two physical servers.

  • Adding hard drive for poweredge 2900

I need to add a hard drive for storage on a server poweredge 2900.  There are 4 HARD drives in a RAID 5 array, but I don't want to add the new hard drive in the array.  I installed the HDD but impossible to initialize the disc and do it online.  Is there something that needs to be done first?  I do not have the options to reconfigure, only blink and add spare of the OSMA.

    Thank you

Assuming you have a PERC 5/6, it is important to know that the PERC does NOT support non-RAID.  So, if you want to use a disk like a stand-alone drive, you must first configure it in a RAID array.  The only RAID level that accepts a single drive is RAID 0.  You can do since within the OMSA inside the BONE (storage, PERC, Information/Configuration, create/New in list dropdown controller), or you can do it from the CTRL-R during POST utility (brightness, control F2, Create/New - be sure to check the advanced options and initialize boxes).

(Reconfigure is the option that you choose to add it to your existing 5 RAID to increase its size.)

anyway... I want to add the hard drive of my laptop...

    Thank you

Are you eager to replace your SSD 128 GB with a larger SSD?   Replace your CD/DVD-ROM drive or add a second SSD/hard drive instead?

If you are talking about a second hard drive, I bought this for my G2 450 ProBook and installed a 500 GB SSD in this basket where was my CD-Rom drive.    Of course I don't have a CD inside the laptop now, but I never use it anyway.  Can I use a USB CD-Rom if I need one.

  • Adding 3rd hard drive for HP Pavilion Elite m9250f

I have a Pavilion Elite m9250f running Windows Vista Home 64 bit. The computer currently has two 500 GB hard drives for a total capacity of 1 TB. I would like to add a third drive to increase storage capacity.  I have a SATA to 2 to and cables. When I tried to install the new drive above the two existing disks, he did not slide smoothly. When I removed the already highest reader, I could slide the new drive into but the screws are not line up properly with the new drive. This leads me to believe that I can not install a third drive in the Bay. Is this a correct assumption?

I have an available expansion Bay below the optical drive but am not sure that it is usable for a hard drive. If the use of the expansion Bay is possible, do I have to buy a hook or how to mount the drive in this space?

If necessary, I can copy the data from the secondary drive on an external drive and replace it with the new drive. However, I need confirmation that the secondary is the player in the foreground of both in the hard disc enclosure.

    Thank you for your help.

If the task under the existing optical Bay is open, just use an adapter to fill the space and to mount the drive in there.  Make sure of course that there is a power cord and a SATA port.

    Hello Martin

Unfortunately I was found no specific information. If I'm right, this unit needs 1.9 HDD and I think it can be much more expensive as 2.5 standard.

Check it please this page http://www.laptopbits.co.uk/Database_files/Toshiba_Portege_2000_and_2010_series_spares.htm
You will find a few pieces of upgrade for your device.

  • Compatible hard drives for Portege 3480CT

    Hello

I have a Portege 3480CT and I need to replace its 12 GB (IBM & reg Travelstar) drive hard internal since the former on a developed bad blocks. Now, I assumed that it would be relatively simple, but I was wrong.

In any case, I got a replacement 2.5 "HD (this time a Hitachi Travelstar, 20 GB drive), but I couldn't make it work. I ran the program from IBM/Hitachi diagnosis and while the old 12 GB HDD is detected and removed ok, the 20 GB does not even get detected (i.e., seems that nothing is on the line of the IDE).

It was suggested to me by IBM and Hitachi that there is a list of compatibility to their hard drives, and may not be supported (http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/compatibility.htm), but I could not find my disc on their list (model is HTS424020M9AT00). Basically, what I want to know is what drives * are * compatible or what my problem with the laptop is otherwise.

For more info, when I try to install Win2k, I get an ArcRead failure, probably because he thinks that the drive does not exist.

    Thank you.

    Hello

I guess that there is problem with drive HARD and false parameter who decide if the HARD drive is the master or slave.

In my opinion you should contact the Service partner to ask them which HDD is suitable for your device. You can also check on the net and picking up some information because there are a lot of different suppliers where you can buy the HARD drive. I also found information that it is possible to use the 40 GB HARD drive for your unit, but it must be built in by seller.

  • Satellite A105-S4074 - which HARD drive for upgrade?

I want to replace the Toshiba MK1234GSX (120 GB, 5400 RPM, SATA-150, 8 MB cache) hard drive on my A105-S4074 laptop with a bigger. My question is whether it is good to buy a Toshiba HDD no.

Available on direct to my computer Toshiba laptop is only the following HARD disk:
    HDDR320I02X
Toshiba 320 GB 2.5 "5400 RPM internal notebook hard drive - SATA"
    Capacity: 320 GB
    Interface: Serial ATA 150
    Speed: 5400 RPM
    Buffer size: 8 MB

I wonder if such a 320 GB or 500 GB WD HARD or Momentus drive will work very well, for example
-Western Digital 320 GB / 500 GB Scorpio blue SATAII 5400 RPM 2.5 IN. 8 MB in bulk / OEM hard drive (WD3200BEVT/WD5000BEVT
    -Seagate Momentus 5400.6 320/500 GB 5400 RPM / MIN SATA 3 GB/s 8 MB Cache 2.5 inch internal NB Hard Drive (ST9320325AS/ST9320325AS)

Also, is it wise purchase a 7200 RPM HARD drive for this laptop? Would this work?

    Thank you

    Hello

First on interface SATA there is no capacity limit. This means that you can buy each HARD drive with SATA interface and it should work fine.

It is also irrelevant if you buy a Toshiba, Western Digital, etc. There is not much difference between the models. It of your choice what you buy! ;)

Theoretically, 7200 RPM HARD drive should work but don t forget that they produce more heat and need more battery power. 5400 RPM should be sufficient for most applications.

  • new hard drive for laptop

I have a laptop dv7-3140el and HD samsung HM641JI 640GB 2.5 "SATA 5400 RPM (to replace car failure). To buy a new hard drive I have to take the same or I can take 7200 RPM instead of 5400? What technical specifications should I look for when buying a hard drive for computer laptop dv7-3140el? I wouldn't make a bad purchase!

    Sorry for my bad English

    Hello

Here are a few points to note when replacing your HARD drive:

You are not limited to any particular drive manufacturer.

The speed of rotation of the disc can be 5400 RPM or 7200 RPM

The new drive HARD should be at least the same capacity (or slightly more is okay) as the original drive - mounting a drive smaller than the original often causes risks with recovery media.

The player at the link below is an example of one that would be perfect for your laptop.

750 GB hard drive for laptop.

If necessary, the procedure to replace the hard drive begins on Page 47 of your maintenance & Service Guide.

    Kind regards

  • How to partition a hard drive for a B50-70 for Linux? No problem with that?

    Hello

How to partition a hard drive for a B50-70?

I want to install Linux and keep Windows 8.1 also.

This will affect the software factory example: back up hard drive function, OKR?

Problems partitioning B50 of the 1970s?

Is it acquisitions have 8.1 Windows on a laptop Lenovo-B50-7?

What will happen if I got rid of Windows 8.1 operating system?

    Thanks in advance.

    Information on the machine:

    B50-70

    Model name: 20384

    Windows 8.1

I've not seen / heard of successful use of the flash drive for recovery purposes. The default software using optical disk, when I used it on my G580.

If your laptop does not have a CD / DVD burner, you may need to contact them directly to discuss this option.

As to where he is? It is a hidden partition on the hard drive, is usually not accessible.

Cloning the hard drive can not return to that partition hidden - it would be a little bit the clone of the drive to work.

I recommend to download your manual of maintenance on the Support site and learn more about the 100% specific for your laptop recovery process.
