adding the 2nd Time Machine disk backup capability

I have a Mac pro OS X 10.11.5 with two discs devoted to the backup. When I wanted the first filled to the top, then add the second to continue archiving backup files.

I don't want to lose my older archived data in backups on disk 1.

What happens when I add a second drive to add capacity to the Time Machine backups?  Once the first drive is hard full TM then will use the second drive until it is full?

When you add the second drive, I get a warning that the TM will take turns using the disc 1 and disc 2. But 1 disk is full. TM will not delete old information on Drive 1 to make room? If Yes is not good because I want to keep the old data. I just want to keep incremental backups to Drive 2.

Please specify the feature.

Yes, TM will continue to save on disk 1 and delete older backups and take turns with disk 2. If you want to keep 1 as it is by car, then you must remove it from the list of backup. Start a new backup on disk 2, and continue. In both cases, the disc 2 will make a new full backup of your computer.

I backup my MacBook Pro and MacBook Air to Time Machine but show just 'preparation' constantly.  Tried rebooting the Machine and the time of the Macbook, and they are all connected via Airport utility.  Don't know what other troubleshooting I could undertake?  Any help gratefully received.

Sierra is having issues and never use Time machine on top of an existing backup anyway.

    The steps are to.

    1. archiving of current backups.

Plug a USB key that is equal to the size of the disk of the CT (you mix the terms Time Machine... software backup on the computer... and Time Capsule... material target for backups within a router).

Archive is on the airport utility disk tab.

    2. once the backup is complete. It may take a day or two for 2 TB which is full drive.

Erase the disc from TC... a quick erase is fine.

It takes only a few minutes.

3 factory reset the TC and reconfigure airport under Sierra on one of your Mac utility.

Reset Time Machine preferences and it should start and run very well.

But also, you should read some of the other threads here on the problem.

For example... preparation is supposed to spend a lot of time when you try to use the existing backup... more wireless with two computers together... It will take days to complete.

You can also use .bz (or something else) instead of .bk to this effort. The important

  • Time Machine: deleted backups of the status "pending".

    Hello world

I manually deleted some old backups Time Machine interface, by clicking on the gear button in the backup Finder and selecting Remove backup.

Now deleted backups are no more hard disk or in the trash, but they are always present in the Time Machine interface in a "pending" status and it is not possible any action on them.

How can I remove them completely from Time Machine?

Thanks in advance for any suggestion,

    Good bye

    Gabriele

Manual removal of the old backups is not a good thing to do. Let Time Machine take care of itself.

I suggest you use Spotlight to reindex your hard disk and backup disk, then run a backup Time Machine and see what clears the problem. If this isn't the case, you might be better off erase your backup disk and start a new Time Machine backup.

  • Copy the old Time Machine files to the new disk TM

Sorry people, I have to ask two (related) questions:

    (1) I have a WD My Passport for Mac drive connected to an Airport Extreme and 2 Macs use for backup via Time Machine. Now, the disk is full. I bought a WD My Book for Mac drive with a capacity of 4 TB and am ready to go.

Question: can I copy the old files of Time Machine on my new book?

    (2) until now 2 different Macs used the My Passport as a Time Machine drive with no problems.

Question: Should I partition the new drive (My Book) and every Mac uses its own partition as Time Machine or can proceed us as is?

Thank you very much for your help!

Question: can I copy the old files of Time Machine on my new book?

Yes you can, but there is a lot of work, a little complicated, time consuming and not worth the effort for most users.  The main reasons for this are...

    (1) the older backups will take a good amount of space on the new drive, limiting the space on the disk again.

    (2) Time Machine backups for the old files will continue... it will make a new copy of every Mac and then go forward again with incremental backups.

A better plan would be to keep the old drive on hand for a few months, in which case you need to go back and look for a file. After a few months, you will have a beautiful story from backup to the new hard drive and no need of older backups so you can remove the old disk and keep around as a spare part or use it for other purposes.

Question: Should I partition the new drive (My Book) and every Mac uses its own partition as Time Machine or can proceed us as is?

While you can partition the drive and save each Mac to a separate partition if you wish, there is really no need to do this since Time Machine will automatically create separate for each Mac backup files.

  • Time Machine - keep backups on a disk-without having a full backup?

After that I moved all my old backup data on a new player and liked that I expected Time Machine (TM) just continue where we left it when the smaller drive has been marked as complete. On the contrary, it seems that TM took a full backup take a lot of space for backups that already existed between the data leave the smaller drive?

This kind of destroyed the concept of TM "incremental forever" which I assumed could survive a movement of backup of data from a smaller to a larger drive?

  • can I remove the old time machine backups

can I delete older backups time machine in car

You can, but it is not recommended... and will be a long and tedious process with a very real risk that your entire backup file may be damaged. Is not worth the time and the risk in my opinion.

Really, you have three options viable, listed in the order of most expensive on toward the bottom.

    (1) add a new time Capsule and begin to go upside backups... you keep your backups downside... you have to buy a new time Capsule

    (2) add a USB drive to your existing Time Capsule and start backups to go.   Upside down... you keep your old backups.  Downside... the USB will be slow compared to time in car Capsule.

    (3) clear your Time Capsule drive and start over with backups upside... no extra charge. Downside... you lose your backups.

I was given this information by a Support person above Adobe technique by CAT yesterday.  The technical support I received was well below the Adobe standards.

I don't know what your question, but it may (or may not) be useful:

system restore time-machine and windows both seem to cause a lot of problems with adobe products.

Once this happens, the only solution is (AFAIK) to uninstall all the programs of issues (i.e., full suite/version), specific to the use of the Adobe Creative Cloud cleaning tool to solve installation problems , then reinstall.

to reinstall the product cc, install the application of cc, Download Adobe Creative Cloud apps desktop | CC free trial Adobe and use the desktop application to install your programs of cc.

  • Time Machine failed backup. What are alternative backup software?

A MBP with 1 TB HD could not continue the Time Machine backup, after update OS X to El Capitan 10.11.6. Old backups TM are automatically removed because of the error checking. The MBP also failed to make a new backup TM.

I guess I maybe need a reinstallation of the OS X. How is it safe to reinstall OS X 10.11.6 without a backup?  Any suggestion of a software disk cloning? (e.g. copy of carbon can make a clone of disc? How do I?)

You should check the drive you used for Time Machine backups with disk utility > first aid to make sure that the disc is not serious. If you mean Carbon Copy clone, yes it can create clones. Instructions to create a clone are provided with the program.

  • Cannot open encrypted on Time Machine disk image

I have an encrypted file protected by password in my Macbook Pro.  The folder name is "Enc.dmg" and is kept in the main Applications folder. If I remove the Time Machine backup before a dmg file, it seems theoretically to save.  But when I later enter Time Machine go to Applications and click on the Enc.dmg file, it opens; It is not mount the disk image and invite me to enter the password.  Instead, a non-functional information is displayed.  The box contains unnecessary information. He tells me it's a dmg file.

If ever, my computer crashes or is lost or stolen and I can't access my file encrypted on Time Machine, I'll be in big trouble.  Is it possible to actually make a dmg properly function in mode Time Machine?

You restore the file before trying to open it? It should not open in Time Machine.

Time Machine is to back up files on a local disk. If your gmail emails are in local hard disk, they are ongoing. But if they are on a Gmail server, this isn't a function of time Machine.

  • time machine/capsule backup lost

    Hello

When wanting to access the saved data of time capsule via the time machine, time machine shows zero backup history while there would be more than a year with a value of more than 900 GB.  I get this in time machine preferences:

When you click on the available data disk, time capsule/machine displays no backup history and appears empty; the above data disk it is not accessible and cannot be removed.  Yet one of these disks is indicated as an accountant 963 GB of data, and I suspect that it is the only inaccessible.  How the hell could this happen?  Anyone has an idea, and advises?  I do not tinker with the application and airport utility shows no connectivity issues.  Please, let me know as soon as possible - thanks!

    Frank M.

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for Time Machine discovered a corruption of backup... it will then proceed to delete the backup and start over. The sparsebundle is not deleted... He still occupies the space that it used to before deleting the content took place.

The only way to know if that is really what happened is to open the sparsebundle in the finder. See if it's contained in there... If there is... the question is different. TM has lost its connection to its own protection is also not rare. Any change in the network, you have done for this cause. It is possible to reconnect to the existing backups.

    My recommendations...

    1. read some of Pondini howto in order to understand what is happening.

    http://pondini.org/TM/troubleshooting.html

A4 and A5 are the most useful... TM to reset and verify backups.

    2. open the sparsebundle in the Finder and see if there is indeed always glad... If so, check in the TC. To do this through the disk tab in the airport utility. Plug in a USB key in the TC...

Once you check the disk...... delete it and start a new backup.

You can still access the old backup by plugging the USB directly to the computer... Right-click on the icon of TM in the dock. And select Browse... According to the screenshot below.

The TM and TC combo turns out to be less reliable over time (pun intended).
