Additional disk on Dell R710 with PERC 6i controller

I want to add an additional drive to an existing 5 RAID.  Can I do this without destroying the data?  If so, what is the procedure.

Thank you

You must CLEAR the foreign configuration on the first disc (storage, PERC, Information/Configuration, foreign/Clear in list dropdown controller). After compensation, it will show as a LOAN.

Hi all, I'm new and I have a question / an interesting situation.

I work at a place that has a side job and other corresponding testing of all 100% server hardware.  No not the internet key equipment and we can not use Dell openmanage, I know: (.)  Sometimes our side test was "played" with so that it becomes a bit different and we need to match the side work again.  So to make them the same as we want to be able to shoot one of the servers work drives RAID 1 it pop in the test part and rebuild tests disks RAID 1 hard sides.

I tried this and it's not well.  I'm looking for the best way to do it?  You cannot use either of imaging software.  :(

When I tried this, I pulled on all sides of tests of hard drives and fallen into one of the RAID1s on the side work.  Then I said yes to "import foreign disks" then I booted into the operating system and fell in one of the tests sides other readers thinking he would rebuild it, but it didn't.  I guess it's because it was still part of the former RAID1 VDs?  in any case, I then rebooted the testing server, deleted the old disks hard foreign config thinking the controller THEN let me rebuild on it, but still NOT!  I'll have to 'replace' the hard drive.  What I am doing wrong?  Is there a good way to do it?

    Thank you!!!

    -Thomas

Disks using as as a replacement for a "backup" was never part of its design, but the process of moving the disks to a new controller is fully supported:

    1. CTRL-R start
    2. Remove the VD
    3. Power off
    4. Remove the old disks
    5. Insert the new drive
    6. Power on
    7. IMPORT the foreign configuration
    8. Insert the drive to rebuild... HOT!
    9. CTRL-R start
    10. CLEAR foreign config
    11. Assign the drive as a hot spare to begin to rebuild

Curious to know your limits - no OMSA, no imaging software?

  • Server Dell r610 with PERC 6 / i controller

    Hello

M using dell r610, which is configured with PERC6 / i controller, problem is I want to know when I configured the RAID-0 and remove my disk only, fails to get the boot, how to solve this problem?

Once again, I want to know:

    1. with the raid configuration are we able to expand the size of the disk (from 2 TB to 3 TB) without lossing data

2 are we able to use this server with No.-raid because raid will be risky in the case of a disk failure and won't lose data...?

((1-Yes, you can, but ONLY if 1) your system is currently in UEFI boot mode and 2) you are not currently using a RAID 10 (or have several bays on the disks).

2 n ° on PERC 6 does not support the RAID/JBOD. RAID is ONLY risky if the USER chooses a risky RAID level (RAID 0 should be used for specific reasons by experienced professionals).

RAID 0 has NO fault tolerance.

  • Failed to create full-size VMFS Datastore on large virtual disk on Dell R710 5 2 t + 1, Raid 5 PERC6i controller

ESXi4, I installed it on my Dell R710. She has 6 1 TB on PERC6i SAS drives, 5 discs do Raid 5 with hot spare disk 1. And I created 3 VD, 1 is from 40 GB to install the OS, 2 is 1 TB to contain the model ISO and VM and 3 is 2.6 TB to contain the VM.

After installing ESXi4, I found only 2 created Datastore: 2. 39 GB 1 Datastore and 1 TB data store no data store has been created on the VD 2.6 TB.

I tried to create it manually, but I found that only 635 GB in size can be created on this 2.6 t. Why? As I remembered ESXi4 can support up to 64 TB VMFS Datastore.

    The BIOS is 1.0.4.

    Someone had the idea?

Take a look at this "vSphere and 2 TB LUN has changed VI3.x.

    http://virtualgeek.typepad.com/virtual_geek/2009/06/vSphere-and-2TB-LUNs-changes-from-vi3x.html

Oh, a data store to 64 would consist of 32 degrees to ~ 2 TB. The limit on the size of the LUN behind the data store is 512 b less than 2 TB

  • maximum number of cores on esxi dell r710 with Xeon E5520 HT

    I intend to buy a dell r710.

This system will have 2 system physics quad core and HT technology.

It will have 8 cores with two Hyperthreaded by heart.

The free esxi version is limited to 6 cores per socket.

A hyperthreading is considered as a physical core for this limit under license?

After this discussion, it seems that a HT is handled by the same esx 3 licenses and esx2, which is HT does not count against the limit of 6 basic license.

    Hello

It is my understanding as well. HT is not considered part of the license that you can always turn it off. Not necessarily, you cannot disable a Core.

  • Expanding RAID 10 on Dell R730 with Perc h730P

    Hi all

We try to develop an array of RAID 10 on a server rack with a h730P Perc controller Dell R730. We currently have 6, 600 GB SAS drives in RAID 10 Bay. When he clicks on the controls to perform an action it really gives us only to assign Global Hot Spare. There is no option for "Task Reconfigure" on the virtual drive to increase the table to include 2 new readers. I'm not sure how to proceed. It is a server recently bought last year. We use OpenManage Server Administrator to try to achieve this. Reading some forums it seems that we will see a "reconfigure tasks" on the drop of virtual drive, but we do not have.

    Thank you

You cannot reconfigure a nested table of RAID (RAID 10, 50 and 60).

You must save, create table, restore.

    Firmware version

    12.0.1 - 0091

    Driver version

    4.31.01.64

    Version of the Storport driver

    6.0.6002.18005

Do you know why this phenomenon occurs? Do we need to do a Firmware Update for the PERC controller? If so, this will delete RAID 1, OS disks?

Thank you in advance for your help!

    See you soon.

If you change to UEFI, you will need to reinstall the operating system. UEFI completely changes the way the operating system reads the system hardware, so there is not a way to avoid a reinstallation.

The firmware update will not affect the RAID array.

  • Memory upgrade - Dell R710 with 1 GB DIMM

    Hello

My server before in the memory modules Ram 1 GB

    A1 A2 A3 B1 B2 B3 B6 B5 B4 A6 A5 A4

I'm looking to fill all of the empty boxes with modules of 1 GB but when I did it an error of memory and does not start. I looked in the BIOS and the memory configuration is set to optimized (it does allow me to change that). It has also two CPU - FYI

    Thank you

    Matt

    Matthew.Ryan,

Unfortunately with UDIMM installed on the server, it is currently overexploited. This is due to the restriction of this population of DIMMs for UDIMM memory and quad-rows DIMM is two by way. So the 3rd dimm per channel will not be supported when you use the UNIQUE access.

Let me know if this helps answer the question.

  • How many berries is compatible with PERC H730P controller?

    The H730P controller supports RAID 10 dies in car 4 x 4?

    Hello

    sandy98g

    The H730P controller supports RAID 10 dies in car 4 x 4?

    Yes

The limits on the H730 exceed most of the hardware configurations. The H730 supports up to 64 virtual disks, you could theoretically have 64 x 4 disk RAID 10 s.

There are length of scope and limits of disk to consider as well, but this configuration is not near any limitation of the controller.

    Thank you

  • Using disks SAS for R710 PERC 6 / i controller

I have a server R710 with PERC 6 / i controller, which originally had two 136 GB SATA disks and I want to replace it with two drives of 500 GB SAS (Dell Constellation SED). I put the SAS disks in slots 0 and 1, turn on the server and the BIOS OF THE controller reports both as having failed. the top lit flashes yellow two disks. The firmware of the controller is v6.3.1 - 0003, A14, such as reported by the BIOS, set up the screen. While these drives are not new, I wonder if they didn't in fact or there is something else I have to do on the server to allow these disks to use. Can anyone give me any suggestions?

    Thank you, Daniel

    daniel_wu
I even try to replace old disks together rather than "grow" one at a time. I don't think I can anyway because they are of different types of readers - SATA vs SAS.

    No, you can't... that's why I asked.

    daniel_wu
How can I disable encryption on the drive? I want to just use it as a "regular" readers I don't think I've seen all the options on the PD MGMT screen. The drive came as failed and most of the options are grayed out.

You can not turn it off.  PERC 6 can't stand NOT of SED - he has no knowledge of this feature, so it is impossible to turn off or manage otherwise.  There is no real 'options' on the PD MGMT screen... If they are displayed as foreign, then you must first clear the foreign configuration on the screen, VD MGMT (control of brightness, F2, foreign, Clear).

If you do not have these options - no way to clear the foreign configuration or configure the drives in a RAID array, you probably cannot use these only disks on PERC 6 in all.  The H700 is supported on your server and supports the SED discs, although I don't know what are the requirements exist for them.

  • The Dell R710 server upgrade to R2 2012 Windows

    Question for the forum:

I have a Dell R710 server.  There a PERC 6 / i RAID card in there.  There are discs 5 x 2 TB on the PERC 6 / I configured in RAID-5 right now with the 6th disc as a 480 GB SSD.   I currently own WINDOWS 2012 R2 installed.   Windows 2012 sees the TB 5 x 2 as a 7.27 TB HDD and the 480 GB SSD as a second hard drive.

I heard the Windows 2012 R2 storage solution is best.  I want to convert the TB 5 x 2 hard drives just so R2 2012 Windows can control it.  I have the following questions:

    1. What do I have to go in PERC 6 / I controller and remove the RAID 5 and create a virtual disk for each 2 TB as a RAID-0 disk drive so that Windows can see each as separate hard drive?

    2. each of the 2 TB is a SATA II drive.  PERC 6 / I can only support up to 2 TB to 3 Gbps.  What is the best way to do it?  Can I upgrade to SATA III drives or 6 Gbps?  This server which will support at all?  I have

    3. If I install a SATA III controller in the PCIe slot, how can I plug SATA III drives to the card.  All drives are connected to the server to forward now.

4 If a disk fails, Dell R710 will still flash light orange on the forehead to show what defective hard drives?  People still hot to swap the drive?

    5. Windows 2012 R2 will be able to tell what defective hard drives?  With 5 x 2 to for the storage and 480 GB put in place in the SSD for tiered storage, which is the best way to configure it for performance?  Simple volume or mirror?  How many drives can fail until Windows cannot recover from the failure?

Please advise on the best way to convert more software raid WINDOWS 2012 R2.  Thanks for the help in advance!

    1. This is the only way to make available to Windows as separate disks, as the PERC 6 does not support the RAID/JBOD.

    2. the PERC 6 supports a maximum drive size of 2 TB. The material is limited to 3 Gbps. You can use 6 GB/s drives, but they will operate as discs 3 Gbps.

    3. you will need to connect a cable from the backplane to the new controller, instead of the 6 PERC. Backplane may not support 6 GB/s speed, if you plug a controller 6Gbps 6Gbps drives and they bind upward to 3 Gbps, that is why.

    4. Yes.

    5. Yes. How can fail depends on how you have set it up and how much data is there.

  • PowerEdge R710 and perc h700, disc not visible in OS

    Hey,.

We have PowerEdge R710 with perc h700 raid 5 controller physical drives under raid6 running. We have recently added a sixth of the road which is much smaller (512 against 4 TBS) we want to just format and use it as a normal drive in the OS (Ubuntu 12.04.5).

However, the drive is not visible in the operating system. When you enter the settings of the RAID controller that it says that the drive is READY but not configured and all the options to the title of operations are grayed out. How can we make this hard drive is visible in the operating system?

    See you soon

The H700 does NOT support non RAID, so all records first must be configured on the controller, before its presentation to the BONE. You must configure (initialize) as a single drive RAID 0.

  • Dell R710 and ESXi 4.1 NIC issue.

Please bare with me, I'm a newbe with vMware.

    My question is this:

Got a new Dell R710 with Broadcom BCM5709 quad. Install ESXi 4.1 CD. Then, I created a virtual machine and install Win Server 2008 R2 64 bit.

In vSphere Client under configuration-> network-> properties (per virtual switch)-> network-> adapter details maps I see the Broadcom adapter. But in Windows in the Device Manager the NIC comes as Intel PRO/1000MT.

This is the expected behavior? ESXi support a pilot intel virtual any? or must we show Broadcom NIC.

If this is not the expected behavior, please suggest a solution.

    Thank you

    Welcome to the community,

what you see is expected and in design. ESX mask the real hardware and presents a virtual hardware to virtual machines. In this way, you are able to move the virtual machine across different hosts and even VMware Workstation, player,... without a lot of changes.

  • Adding additional disk to ESXi 4.1 Datastore on Dell PowerEdge R710

    Greetings,

We currently have a Dell PowerEdge R710 with 6 SAS das drives configured in a RAID-1/RAID-5 configuration. A drive is configured as a global hot spare. I would add this spare drive in the RAID-5 table, where some virtual machines live, to recover additional space. Has someone managed to do this? Is the only way via the PERC BIOS management utility?

    Thank you!

I'm not part "raid-1/raid-5.  But assuming that the table is raid-5, then yes it is possible and yes the BIOS utility is necessary.  The hot spare is currently set should be removed from this role, then added to the existing Bay raid-5, but without the ability to select increase.  This will create free space on the raid-5 array on which then a new logical volume can be created, which will be then seen by ESX as a new drive and therefore another data store can be added to this (or it can be added to the first as a measure).  HTH

I have currently 3 250 GB installation as a raid 5 (original configuration) disks on a server R710 with a Perc 6 / i controller.  I ordered 3 discs (same readers) that we are running out of disk space. There is a set up disk C: and D:.  Can someone point me to instructions for adding these additional disks for the raid existing (drive D) without having dataloss?

    Thank you

    Gary

If you don't have that one 'disk' listed in disk management, then you have only a single VD configured, which is good.

You must install OMSA to broaden your VD. You then insert your new drives, make sure that they show as ready under physical disks, then go to virtual disks and select Reconfigure to your RAID 5. Adding two drives in your RAID 5 will add about 500GB (bit math makes it a little less) to your current Windows 'disk '. After the reconfigure statement, you will have something similar to below. Then, assuming that you do not run 2003, you click on the D: drive and choose Extend to finish with the second photo:
