  Try to remove DC using tool cleaning available here: Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat cleaning - Adobe Labs tool, restart the computer, and then reinstall Adobe Reader DC from here: Adobe - Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Distribution .

  Assuming you have Reader 9.3.4 already installed on your machine, you can try the following to make demand opening of default PDF Reader 9.3.4:

  1. right click on any PDF on your system, and then click the option 'Open with' from the context menu that appears. In case you get another submenu, click on program selected in this menu. (Where you don't see 'Open with' option, then hold down the SHIFT key and right-click on the file)

  2. click on the Browse button in the dialog box that appears, select Reader 9. Make sure you check the box "always use the selected program to open this type of file"

  3. click on OK.

  This will make Adobe Reader 9 as the default viewer for all PDF files on your system.

  Today I couldn't open a pdf document by double-clicking on it in Windows Explorer. Apparently, nothing happened. Finally, I opened right click and chose with... Chrome. It worked. The default value is Adobe Acrobat Reader DC. I found later, after the closure of the browser widow, dialog windows three under.   I just tried the Adobe Acrobat Reader DC selection and nothing I happening. I reduced all the windows one by one to see if a dialogue window appears, but no.

  (1) if I double click on a single PDF file, the file opens without any problem
  (2) if I double click on a second PDF file, I get ' Fatal Error: Acrobat failed to connect to a DDE server.
  (3) if I double click on a third file I also get ""Fatal Error: Acrobat failed to connect to a DDE server " and so on..."
  (4) if I completely close Adobe Reader, I can open and then again all a single PDF file
  (5) basically I can have only one PDF file open at any time
  (6) if I reboot my system, I can open multiple PDFs even once without any problems, but after leaving my system on without restarting the computer for a while (possibly after a whole day) the question back again and I have to restart once again to solve the problem. Very annoying.

  SCENARIO #2
  (1) I Double click on a single PDF file, the file opens
  (2) I click file = > open select one or more PDF files and have no problem open as many PDF files I want.
  (3) I guess I can use this as a workaround but I find that it is not also practice that double-click several files in Windows Explorer.

  
  Here's what I've tried so far vain

  Uninstall/reinstall of Adobe Reader 9.1
  -uninstall Adobe Reader 9.1 and Adobe Reader 8 installation
  -Remove the checkmark next to "USE DDE" in the Windows Explorer File Types section
  (In Windows Explorer, click on tools = > Folder Options = > Types of files = > PDF = > advanced = > open = > change = > use DDE)

  
  -Set Windows Services Network DDE DSDM Network DDE services automatic and verified that they are both started
