  I have updated the bios on HP 6710 b problems. The reason why I'm trying to update is the noise of the fan, it is incredibly strong. I cleaned the fan and the heatsink off dust recently. This is on a fresh install of XP Professional equipped with drivers.

  My HP 6710 b runs on bios F.04 dated dated 02/04/2007, which is quite old. There are updates several of this last being dated F.20 from 01/12/2011.

  The problem is that trying to upgrade to F.20 an error occurs, saying "this update requires version rom F.10 or above" via USB thumbdrive.

  Update to F.10 requires SSM.

  Here are the following installation instructions for F.10:

  NOTE: For flashing the BIOS OF THE system on a notebook of target in
  a network, the system BIOS image must be used with SSM.

  1. download the SoftPaq. EXE file in a directory
  on your hard drive.

  2 copy the SoftPaq in storing files.

  To my knowledge, this means the newest SoftPaq download available and selecting the bios update via the software in question. However, SoftPaq does not show a bios update available.

Ive tried to boot from the XP cd, but it gives the message "no hard drive not detected" and fails. detect the drives in the BIOS there is no options to the automobile.

  Curiously, a USB bbot containing paragon hard disk manager won't start and sees my drive (two partitions) and the system partition is active.

  I wonder if the flashing the BIOS changed settings or drive letters so that windows does not see properly. I wish there was just a simple option in the bios for detection of discs.

  If you want to start your computer from the xp cd, then enter the bios and it try to disable the sata mode and activate the ide mode and then try to format your drive... it should work... !!!

  I Don t think the biosupdate is the reason for the reduced screen. It does not sound like a software thing, but rather a hardware malfunction.

  Is your normal screen during startup? If so, I'd say just remove your existing display drivers and install the new. But if it s like you described then it must be a hardware problem and the machine should be checked by a technician or at least a service partner.

  Would be better if your bring your machine to an ASP for a checkup of material.
