AirPort Extreme A1408 (5th generation) low flow on both WiFi and wired

Hi all

I have an extreme A1408 Airport (5th generation), which is connected to the internet via a cable UTP (wall plug, the internet provider has its routers in the basement of the apartment building). My plan is to 1000 / 200 MB (down / up - Romanian RCS & RDS, Fib), however, I'm getting averages of 90 / 80 MB speeds on speedtest.net. The best I've ever had was about 180 / 200 Mbps, but that happened once.

The low speed produce on both WiFi and wired (I have an iMac, a MBP, a 6s iPhone and an iPad Mini that connect through WiFi, on the 5 GHz network and a Mac Mini that is connected to the router), with my wireless devices to full signal strength and connection to 450 Mbps. Since low speeds correspond to the cable wire / WiFi (I expected to the Mac mini to outdo the other, since its on gigabit ethernet), this is not a discussion on how to choose the best channel (I tried auto or manual installation, with it on different channels) or change its placement (this corresponds with the MBP even right next to the router) to get the best reception.

I tested the connection directly paste the cable in the MBP (via the adapter ethernet of love at first sight) and got 850 / 200 Mbps, then my provider connection works as expected.

I also changed all cables UTP CAT 5, in order to support gigabit speeds to.

My AirPort Extreme is on firmware 7.6.4, set up as follows:

  • PPPoE: always on
  • IPv6: link-local
  • Wireless:
    • WPA2 Personal (faster)
    • No network comments
    • the radio 802 mode value. 11A / n - 802.11b/g/n (self)
    • country of Romania
    • tried auto and manual selection of channels 2.4 Ghz and 5 GHz (by analyzing other autour networks)
  • Router mode: DHCP and NAT (NAT Port Mapping Protocol active)

All iDevices I use are updated to their latest version of the OS.

Is there something that I am missing? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your time!

Most likely the problem you see is that Apple has not designed the more practical to work with fiber Internet airport base stations. Although, the 5th generation 802.11n AirPort Extreme can manage, at best, 400 - 500 Mbps of throughput (in bridged mode) via its WAN - LAN interface, you will see about half of this when it is enabled as a router (as yours is.) In addition, if your ISP has their router activated ahead of yours, you can also receive a "Double NAT" error as well.

    Hey Msdefied,

I understand that you have a problem with your iPod touch not appearing is not in iTunes. Let's go over some additional troubleshooting to get this sorted out.

I would start by reset lock folder on your PC as well as to try cables and different ports if you have access to your PC. Take a look at the article below to continue what you have already started to get this to work for you.

  • AirPort Extreme AirPort Extreme extension causes a loss of the internet

I extend an existing AirPort Extreme of 5th generation (a year or so old) with a new one. When I connect a new one for the network and power, airport utility sees the two airports and asks me if I want to extend the existing one. I clicked on extend and every thing seems to be well - within the parameters, he said that the new airport will extend the existing wireless network. Unfortunately this seemed to cause my modem to lose its connection to the Internet. I have reset the modem a few times, but it wasn't until I disconnected and "forgot" to the new base station that I was able to retrieve internet. Previously, I had an airport model more old where I was trying to find a new one, but it had its own wireless network, which is kind of a pain. I would really like to have just a single network for both airports.  Is this possible or do I. To keep them separate?

Thank you for any help or advice.

If you spread by wireless, you can't have the extreme new plugged in by ethernet.

If you do not want to extend wired you don't use wireless extension... you use create a wireless network with the same SSID (name Apple Wireless speaks) and the same password.

    Please give us more information.

What is the brand and model of the main modem?

Is this also a router? How the most extreme main airport is connected to the network?

This mode is in there... router or gateway?

Please take a few screenshots of the existing configuration using airport utility to show how the current airport is the installation program. We can then tell you the right way to connect the new airport.

Just to be clear is the New Extreme a nine Gen6... or you want to say you have an another Gen5. The Gen6 is now more than 3 years on the market... No gen5 were therefore sold for 3 years.

    Are mix you models?

  • Addition of AirPort Extreme allows a Local network behave strange

    Hello

At the moment is have this setup at home.

DSL-> provider Modem/Router-> LAN-> airport of Time Capsule

The airport Time Capsule is the generation model current 5th A1470 of running in mode Bridge with the router form my provider and implements a wireless network. It all works very well, but in my office working there WiFi coverage is a little low is a desire to grow with another airport.

This is the configuration of the construction:

    DSL-provider of Modem/Router-> LAN-> airport of Time Capsule-> LAN-> Airport Extreme >

Airport Extreme is the generation model 1408 5th also running in Bridge Mode and extend the wireless network. When I perform this configuration, the problems start. All devices bad connection to the internet, features are added several times on the network (also the Airport express are added some time because it appears with a (2) after East), in Airport utility, I get constantly disconnected status and it is very difficult to resolve, because I lose the connection even if I'm hard wired to the airport. I can also access devices that have a static IP address as the same router (192.168.1.1) or my home server. Thus, it seems that my local network is malfunctioning.

When I unplug the Airport Extreme, everything works well again. I searched but not found this problem.

    Thanks for the help.

Airport Extreme is the generation model 1408 5th also running in bridge and extend wireless networkMode.

You can NOT extend wireless with the AE plugged into the TC.

Your choice of plug in ethernet is good.

Your wireless installation must be to create a wireless network... you can use the same name as the TC's wireless or different... It is totally up to you.

What you did is due to a loop with the connection by both wireless and ethernet.

If you want to use extend wireless... much slower option... then you disconnect the ethernet AE of the TC... If the connection is purely wireless.

  • 5th generation AE extension network keeps disconnecting

My WiFi network consists of two extremes of the Airport (the two 5th generation).  One is connected by Ethernet to a modem cable in my house.  The 2nd is located in my studio, a separate building; the two AEs are about 75 feet apart with a couple of walls between them.  The 2nd unit in the studio is implemented to expand my network.   I have several macs on the network, all running El Capitan; also, a couple of iPad and an iPhone, several printers, etc.

For a long time, everything worked fine; but for the last month or two, the AE in the studio which extends the network disconnects and to blink yellow.  I found that the only way to fix is to pull the plug, then go to the House and pull the plug on the main AE and the modem cable.  Then I plug the cable modem back, then the main AE and finally the 2nd AE extending into the studio.   This restores all for a day or two, and then the studio AE stops again.

The main AE and internet connection in the home is always very good. Sometimes, indeed, my wi - fi devices on in the workshop will always have an internet connection even when the AE there disconnects, because they are still in the range of the main EI in the House.  The problem is, I have an ethernet switch connected to the AE in the studio with several hanging devices, and I lost all these connections when the problem occurs.

Can anyone help diagnose this?  The only thing I've tried is to restore the default settings on the 2nd AE in the studio and then re-setting up to expand my network again.  It seems to work for awhile, but the same problem will occur later.  I'd appreciate any help anyone could offer.

My experience is about the same. I was actually very happy with the Setup program for a long time... It was necessary the occasional blow to wake up but who said a week. In terms of reliability wireless on household appliances, all right. But as time passed, it slowly grew worse and I couldn't solve the problem. I have now stopped doing this way and went to a different brand Repeater that is much more reliable.

IMHO... you need something better than the wireless extension. Seriously for your configuration to run ethernet. Separate the building, you will need to check your local regulations for the grounding of issues. The authorities may insist on the use of the fibers, but if you can bury the ethernet or run a catenary so I always this way.

If your studio is run from home without a counter power, you can also use EOP (homeplug) adapters that can be very successful. Once the power is measured so you have no common circuit so it won't work... It is always an experience if they will work.

So, how to solve the problem... If you are not able to use ethernet, fiber, or EOP or not in a situation where they can work, so let me recommend you run a dedicated wireless link. You need a pair of appropriate external units, e.g. ubiquiti 5 GHz WAP where we're connected in your home via ethernet to the outside wall or in a window where you can see the studio and the other is also the same... facing windows is ok, you can use face to face... If not, they must be installed outside under the eaves.

For now... Let me make some suggestions for your pair of AE. This might work better in the short term, but not in the long term.

    1. use 7.6.1 firmware. It of always better for me than to use 7.6.4 and was reproducible...

To change the firmware, do appear on the summary page, click the version number with the down option. You will see a list of possible versions.

    Simply choose 7.6.1 (nobody else)

Do a factory reset once it degrades and start over. Do it now while both are available. Studio first that she still has the connection lower.

    2. There are too many auto in the installation program. Set specific channels and name the bands differently. It is of course in your main AE.

for example, by using very short names, without spaces and pure alphanumeric characters. Even for the passwords but characters 8-20...

2.4 ghz to say the value... Set of 5 GHz to say AE5ghz and AE24ghz.

Put the string in 2.4 ghz 9 and 5 GHz 36 or what is the lowest channel available.

    3. now install the studio one and are trying to use 5 GHz. It may not work, as the range might be too big... but even with the bad signal, you should be able to see a clear improvement in stability with 5 GHz. If it doesn't work, well, you must use the 2.4 ghz... and now a few funny things will happen as the 5 GHz in the studio will get 5 GHz named AE24ghz... don't worry about this... all part of the fun.

    4. keep track of signal and the speed of the link. Utility v6, you can hover your mouse over the link where it is said well. (Don't even bother if the link says not as good).

Notice the link is located on 5 GHz... as suggested I forced to one, the signal level is low, - 79dBm is much lower than I like, but the connection speed is far superior to any link 2.4 GHz and was much more stable.

Now, let me suggest as the best way to keep track of what happens is to install a utility airport v5 somewhere on your network... even in a windows or machine dual boot a parallels... There are tricks to install even in El Capo. The reason is that you can get a graphical view of the binding of the two ends.

This is the screenshot of the link... and by using the MAC address of the two units I can follow what is happening.

But in the end, it became too unreliable... I think that the AE (mix with equivalent TC in my case) just wore out. Wireless signal in routers seem to be deteriorating over time...

My new Setup is complete one until I run ethernet. I got the hand on a cheap AC router that makes universal Repeater... and it works very well.

Much more poor in a perspective of network... but better reliability point of view.

  • The airPort Extreme has green light, but nothing can connect to it.

My 5th generation AirPort Extreme suddenly stopped allowing all devices connect via WiFi or Ethernet. I can't see it in the AirPort Utility, I can not access it via the browser, and I've rebooted several times without success. I'm afraid, it may have just died, but I'll try to revive because while I can buy a new one, I hate the look of the new units. Any suggestions?

Try powering down of the entire network... all devices... in any order you want

    Wait a minute

Start the modem and let it run a few minutes

Start the AirPort Extreme and run a full minute

Keep a minute out one at a time until the entire network is back of boot devices

  • Charter & Airport Extreme: random drops/disconnects

OK, I'm at the end of my mind to try to get the Charter to work with my wifi from the airport...

After years of strong connectivity, my modem Asus started appearing as "disconnected" Airport utility. I have hard reset the modem, replaced the modem, replaced the coaxial cable to the modem, replaced the 6th gen AirPort Extreme (connected via wan to the modem), hard reset and rebuilt factory default as long as the airport, and the 5th gen Airport (connected by Ethernet at the 6th and in bridge mode) and always keep my modem dropouts or moments where my Airport 6th get suddenly seems to now show activity utility Airport.

I have connected a laptop directly to the Asus without any problems at all, so it's within my network. But I am confused... And very frustrated.

I'm including some settings below, but any help would be appreciated... I don't know what has changed.

Oh, and the two airports are running the latest firmware for their respective models.

    Thank you all!

For the gen 6 Airport extreme, directly connected to the modem via the Wan:

    • Is connected to the Internet via DHCP
      • Configure IPv6 is set to "Link-Local" only (I have checked and don't see that IPv6 is currently active in my Charter service area)
    • Wireless network mode is "Create a wireless network" and I chose the channels for 2.4 and 5 Ghz that I found to be opened via iStumbler
    • Network has the router Mode DHCP and NAT, with an active lease 365 days DHCP and NAT Port Mapping Protocol

For the extreme 5th generation of airport, connected by ethernet to the 6th gen:

    • Is connected to the Internet via DHCP
      • Configure IPv6 is set to "Link-Local" only (I have checked and don't see that IPv6 is currently active in my Charter service area)
    • Wireless network mode is "Create a wireless network" and I selected channels for 2.4 and 5 Ghz as the 6th gen
    • Network is set to "Off (bridge Mode)" router Mode

6th Gen airports have had a lot more problems with the compatibility of the modem that previous generations, so if you have the time... connect the 5th Gen airport to the modem and put in place to do DHCP and NAT to the 6th Gen in bridge... Mode to see how things work out like that.

Charter do not have active IPv6 yet, but they and about all the other suppliers have been the addition of new equipment and changes to their service. This can be a factor in your connection problems.

Yes, I'm sure that the Charter will say that this has had no effect at all on their regular service of IPv4... Since the ISP always claim that they have no issues when you ask them about their service.

If you decide to exchange the Gen 6th and 5th generation, as I suggested above... and you still have trouble connecting... then you are going to have to decide whether to keep the airports and to try another brand of modem... or... keep the modem and try another brand of router.

  • AirPort Extreme and Virgin super hub

    Hello

I have a new hub great vm that I put in place in modem only mode and then using my AirPort Extreme of 2nd generation as the wireless router. Is there a reason why I would see lower broadband speeds like that implemented just vs using the super hub in router mode full. I get very fast BB with just the hub acting as the wireless router but it drops by half or even more with my extreme up to game. The problem is that the hub has the power of the terrible wireless signal? I was wondering if it's because of my extreme 2nd generation? Or perhaps a setting that is incorrect.

    appreciate any advice.

    Thank you

    PHil

A 2nd generation AirPort Extreme is at less than 7 years and that almost 9 depending on where you purchased the product. On average, the useful lifetime of a router designed for domestic use is... average... about 5 years.

You can reset the AirPort Extreme back to default settings and then set ip all over again, but frankly, I doubt that this will result in a significant improvement. Let us know your results if you decide to try it.

If you decide to try a new router, AirPort, Apple offers a 14-day return privilege, so if one new product is not the way you want, you can return it for Exchange or refund.

  • Airport Extreme Double NAT / AT & T NVG510

My Internet connection has worked very well for several years, until recently, when the simple DSL modem (a Motorola 2210-02 - 1ATT) provided by AT & T began to experience intermittent outages. Initially, the DSL modem would lose the line for a minute or two at a time. But within 48 hours, the line started to drop during the hours in a row (synchronization failed line DSL). Whenever the modem has lost the line, my Airport Extreme (the router on my home network), shows a "Double NAT" alert. But whenever the modem 2210-02 DSL connection has been restored, alert the Airport Extreme's "Double NAT" disappeared.

After a day and a half problems, the line is down for so many hours that I finally called AT & T to check the status of our range. So, AT & T sent a technician who concluded fairly quickly the 2210-02-1ATT was the problem and replaced it with a modem/router combo (manufacturing date 11/2014) NVG510 (with router function disabled in the settings).

The speed that results and the quality of the connection via the NVG510 were good, so the tech packed 2210-02 in his bag and left. But now I get that alert "Double NAT" once again on my Airport Extreme, even if the home network is apparently working as well as it ever did.

The only setting I changed was on the NVG510 - as soon as the technology has left, I turned off the WiFi on the NVG510 function because I want the Airport Extreme to my router, same as always.

So far so good. After 24 hours with the NVG510 in place, the network worked well with no major hiccups, the only exception being the status of "Double NAT" alert displayed in Airport utility. In fact, had I have not bothered to watch Airport utility, I don't know that there was a "Double NAT" alert

Everything on the side of the NVG510 LAN is identical to what was in place with the 2210-02...

Airport Extreme 802.11ac works as "router" with the WiFi signal on another floor via an Airport Extreme 802.11n wireless (5th generation).

The WiFi signal provides web access to some desktop Mac, AppleTV, devices, mobile phones, tablet computers and a laptop (laptop is the only device that uses a VPN).

The network on the Airport Express 802.11ac, who serves as router, is "DHCP and NAT." and the "5th Gen," which extends the wireless network, set mode "bridge."

After hours of searching online, I understand that this problem is surely the result of the NVG510, and that this problem exists for at least five years. I've read at least a few tens of different ways to try a fix via adjustments to settings, but none reached the level of a real solution.

Although my network is no problem at the moment, I'm afraid that "Double NAT" alert is a sword of Damocles that will eventually crash my network, a situation I like to avoid. I dared not yet connect the laptop with a VPN to the router, but out of fear that will bring down the whole network.

I'd rather solve the "Double NAT" proactively.

Is there a a way to eliminate the Double "Nat" by adjusting the parameters of the NVG510 and/or the Airport Extreme?  Or, my fears of future problems and a VPN disaster are unfounded?

    Thank you

According to your comments, the NVG510 has not been reconfigured as a bridge and is providing routing functions (NAT & DHCP).

To resolve the Double NAT is the new Motorola NVG510 or AirPort Extreme needs to be reconfigured under a bridge. The simplest solution would be to reconfigure the extreme. In this way, the NVG510 can handle NAT & DHCP services required by clients of network connected to the extreme to access the Internet.

To reconfigure the extreme as a gateway, use the AirPort Utility, as follows:

    • Run the AirPort Utility and then select the extreme.
    • Click on Extreme and then, select Edit.
    • Click the network tab to select it.
    • Change the router Mode to: Off (bridge Mode)
    • Click on update and allow extreme restart.

Can I create an Airport Extreme (current generation) network of roaming with a cable modem/router xfinity manufactured by Cisco (DPC3939 to be exact)?

Yes, if the Airport Extreme will be connected to the Cisco DPC3939 back using wired Ethernet wired, permanent.

The modem-router Cisco/Xfinity put into bridge mode?

No. I you have done this, the Cisco/Xfinity device would only act as a simple modem... so it would not be a wireless service to all.

A note of caution here... the support document you are referencing... Wi - Fi base stations: install and configure a roaming network (802.11 a/b/g/n)... use the examples that are long outdated does not follow with the versions present on a Mac AirPort Utility or iPhone/iPad.

  • Airport Extreme 7,7,7 drop connection and internet high speed

My Airport Extreme (6th generation) have had the serious problems of the internet, as said in the title I had problems with my internet connection, I checked if that was the problem of the modem to the beginning (D3.0 Ubee) which was provided by my Internet, Charter provider.

I've had Airport Extreme for almost a year to 2 years now and since then, I had no problem with my internet until 7.7.7 update came.

I updated my firmware and this is where my random internet connection problem started.

My current contract with the Charter are their 60 Mbps (download speed) and 4 Mbps (download speed), during the first days since I've updated 7.7.7 connections was fine and then my internet has started to decline since a means 50-60 Mbps (download speed) to 0.1 - 2 mb/s (download speed), my download speed has remained a constant 3-4 MB/s (download speed). I have tried and used Opendns several times, he really did nothing.

I tried to turn off both modem and Airport extreme for a couple of minutes and turn on their return, but he does nothing and just refers to an extremely slow speed.

The only way I found to fix my problem to get my internet to 0.1 - 2 mb/s (download speed) back to its original state, I find myself to be a restore return settings on the Airport Extreme with my Airport utility by default whenever the problem returns (which contributes to a certain degree as it gets my back up to 50 internet-60 MB/s) then he drops down again).

I wanted to restore to 7.7.6 or the latest version of previous firmware before 7.7.7 (not too sure what version of firmware, it was) but I can't find how to spend my Airport extreme to my Airport utility.

My question is what could I do to fix this problem if the decommissioning of my extreme (I need instructions with this too), change some settings, get rid of the * thing and get a new router, or am I stuck resetting to the parameter by default whenever she acts upward.

I use windows 10 for my laptop

    Thank you for your time

Unfortunately, the first question that you encountered is the AirPort for Windows utility has not been updated since Windows 7. In addition, it is not supported for use with the 802.11ac latest versions of airport base stations. Then downgrade to earlier versions of the firmware for base station can be difficult, unless you can get hold of a Mac or iOS device.

If you are ready to test Windows 10, here are the steps to do:

    • Open the AirPort for Windows utility.
    • Select the base and then station in the utility menu bar, select the access point > Download Firmware...
    • Click on the Download Version dialog box, where the current version of the firmware is listed.
    • You should now see a list of the firmware versions that are available.
    • Click on the one you want to get off at.
    • Choose either 'continue' to continue with the downgrade, OR click 'Cancel' If you decide not to do so.
    • If you choose to continue, allow the firmware to be downloaded, installed and the base station to turn.
  • Impossible to extend the AirPort Extreme wireless network

I have a wireless network set up with a time Capsule airport 4th generation.  I'm trying to take my old AirPort Extreme wireless 3rd generation. I have double. Kettle has implemented, but I get the status message on the extreme that it cannot extend the network.  I can get a strong signal on my iPhone from the point that I have placed extreme itching so I'm close enough to the time Capsule.

Could I use a connection by current bearer through my home wiring to the extreme and extend it like that?

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Please follow these steps closely and report on your results.

    Power off time Capsule airport.

    Wait 10 to 15 seconds

    Power up Time Capsule airport

Reset the AirPort Extreme back to default factory

Set up AirPort Extreme still extend wireless signal of the time Capsule

  • Airport Extreme doesn't let me change the wifi password

While in the airport utility, I try to change my wifi password and I get "error when updating the configuration."

There is also no list of what devices are connected to the wifi.

And it lists the serial number...

All these things were there yesterday, no downloads or updates between yesterday and today.  Full cycle restarts were made.

The Setup is Cox as ISP, my modem (Arris Surfboard SB6183), AirPort Extreme 5th gen.

    MBP mid 2015, 10.10.5

It seems that Cox is currently implementing a number of changes to their service having to do with IPv6 at the present time.  Cox users who have Apple routers have problems as a result of this, and... if we are using the correct information... Cox is telling users that airports are not compatible with the changes that have been made.  Here is an example of message that we saw today:

Change default delegated prefix IPv6 in Airport Extreme with the Configuration automatic IPv6

Cox suggests to reboot the router when a problem arises... that helps for some users, but not all.

    or

Disable IPv6 on the router from the airport... What is not possible. Even if it were, Apple uses IPv6 settings to enable communication with other Apple devices on the network. You can disconnect IPv6 to the WAN port on the airport by changing parameters IPv6 link Local Only... that Cox makes no mention of.

Now the possible Catch 22.  You must be able to enter the parameters of the AirPort Extreme to change the link Local only... and if you can not access the settings on the airport... things will be difficult.

You are able to open AirPort Utility, click on the image of the AirPort Extreme and then click on change to display the settings... page with tabs for different areas... or... you get an error message until you can get the settings?
