  • Taskbar disappeared and all the desktop icons are gone

Ok... I think it's a virus... but I can't enter "search" to locate. When I connect my wallpaper rises on Windows and that's all. I start the Task Manager and type "explorer", but it says Explorer is not found. I did a virus scan and nothing came. Menu start has disappeared... How can I 'Search' a program when I don't have my Start menu or icons? And why 'explorer' is not found? Help!

    Hello

It could be a virus, or it could be something interferes with the Explorer shell.

If you press ctrl + shift + ESC, open the Task Manager? If so, on the applications tab click "new process" and type explorer.exe and click ok. This starts the desktop computer?

If the Task Manager does not open, then you are probably infected (virus often block access to the Task Manager). Restart in safe mode by pressing F8 when the system starts at the start up, just after the initial POST, and before Windows starts to load. This should result in a boot menu where you can choose Safe mode. Run your scans antivirus from here.

  • All the desktop icons show emblem of Mozilla

    original title: change my icons

My son uses this laptop and every icon has changed to the emblem of Mozilla/Firefox. Please help me solve this problem. I can't get anywhere on this thing, because I don't know what program will open. There is so much rubbish, I can't clean it up.

My son uses this laptop and every icon has changed to the emblem of Mozilla/Firefox.

I've seen this happen when opening a program via a shortcut (for example. LNK file), you are asked what type of program to open it with. After you have selected the Mozilla/Firefox (or another program) via the Select a program from a list of programs installedand check always use the selected program to open this type of file (circled in red below), the document or program referenced by the shortcut of origin opens in Mozilla/Firefox as it should.

The problem is that now all shortcuts (for example. LNK files) on the desktop or in the Explorer will want to be opened by Mozilla/Firefox and use the icon for Mozilla/Firefox to display the shortcut no matter what shortcut was initially intended to open. This is known as a file association and the default icon. The same condition can occur if you have performed these actions 'Open with' on one. JPG or even a. EXE, but the. LNK explanation is much more likely for the items on the desktop.

The good news is that a small free utility was written to cancel the. LNK file association was created. There is also a registry hack to achieve, but I recommend the utility unASSOC for its ease of use.

You can get a copy of my SkyDrive here. I used to send people elsewhere to download a copy, but this page is more confusion with misleading ads to download this and that.

Just download and then run the utility to unassociate the. LNK files. Select. LNK in the list on the left and click on remove the associated file (user) or remove the file type , and then restart the computer.

  • All the desktop icons are running MS Works

Most of the shortcuts on my desktop & the toolbar has changed - the no longer show the correct icon & when I double click on a window appears informing me that MS Works is changing the link

Thus, for example, I click on the shortcut to IE and performs work! I deleted the shortcuts created and new, but the same thing happens.
If I look at the properties, the info is OK with links pointing to the location correct disc & if I run the files directly from the disk they work all OK
This is the case for non MS apps (for example Firefox) as well as the applications of MS
Only my account every day had been affected. I have an account Admin emergent & when I connect to which its fine so it seems to be the user or a specific profile
