An external HD w / 6th gen Airport Extreme can be used for NAS?

I ' d like converted my Mac home theater use more, and I thought about options for NAS.» My current kit includes an old 802.11 g Express, so of course I will upgrade to a new extreme for bandwidth extra. I see the extreme has a full range of ports at the back, so can I attach an external hard drive of quality to the extreme and end up with a good - although budget - NAS?

can I attach an external hard drive of quality to the extreme and end up with a good - although budget - NAS?

Yes, if you are willing to accept extremely slow performance compared to a normal NAS.  The reason is that the USB port on the AirPort Extreme is only USB 2.0, and due to the limitations of speed processor on AirPort Extreme, the port is working at only half the speed of a USB 2.0 on a computer.

So, at best, the 'budget' NAS can run about one third to half the speed of NAS normal. This might be OK for backups and other data that you may not access on a normal basis, but it would not be recommended to try to locate a picture of 'work' library, video library or other type of audio/video media on the USB key which will be available on a regular basis.

Another issue to consider is that the USB 2.0 on the AirPort Extreme is in power, then you will probably need to use a USB powered with AirPort Extreme hub.

Finally, most of the USB hard drives are now USB 3.0... and the port on the AirPort Extreme is only USB 2.0.  In theory, USB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0... but the theory does not always true in practice.

If you already have a USB 3.0 drive, Apple does allow a privilege to return 14 days for the purchase of new AirPort Extreme, so if you still wish to proceed, you can try things for a week or two to see how well... or, even if... .they will work.

  • If 2 Airport extreme can stay connected to each other using their LAN ports?

    Hello friends,

I would like to know if 2 Airport extreme or 1 Airport Extreme and Airport Express can stay connected to each other using LAN ports at the ends? I thought this is the LAN port 1 connected to the WAN port on the 2nd.

    Thank you

To clarify the issue and the scenario, one of my friend described a typical scenario in which there are 2 AEs. AE1 has an ISP in its port WAN and AE2 has a different ISP in its WAN port. This 2 AE can mutually connected between them by using ports LAN AE1 and AE2 ethernet cable? He said this could be feasible if AE2 remained in bridged mode, without using the ISP attached to its WAN port. I just don't get how this is possible. Friends of the search help.

  • AirPort Extreme can disappear from the network

I have an airport Time Capsule 802.11ac 3 TB, implemented as my router, connected to a cable modem Comcast.  I also three units AirPort Extreme 802.11ac connected via an Ethernet cable and configure in Bridge mode.  The settings were all made with Apple AirPort Utility, using the default settings.  All devices are new, and have the latest version of the (7.7.7) package.

My problem is that one of the SSA keeps disappearing from the network.  The AP utility shows all devices, but unity of the 'room' is still "missing in your network.  When I restart the device by unplugging the, the unit seems to work fine for a little while.

Because the problem occurs on a unit, I think not that it is a question of ISP or OS.

Has anyone else had a problem like this, and understand you?

    It is not uncommon.

There is a real problem with apple DNS...

    What modem do you use?

Actual spending brand and model please... It is probably not related, but it is useful to know the complete network configuration.

Question I would like to change.

    1. your names are too long and contain spaces.

Use any short names, without spaces and pure alphanumeric characters. Names must be less than 10 characters... all names... both network name.

See Pondini for questions that arise with more long names... and that was before Apple changed network SMB.

    http://pondini.org/TM/C9.html

    2. the WAN port on the AC model TC and AE are not reliable.

In bridge, what do you do better move the connection to one of the LAN ports...!

    3. you have an unreliable ethernet cord or if it is installed in the wall a bad Jack which is down to... This happens especially in that self installed ethernet... and even the ordinary electrician has problems... sometimes wrongly wired a pair of broken. You should test all ethernet correctly and make sure have full gigabit connections.

    4. use static IP via both a dhcp on the TC and AE reservation jumpered on the internet tab. Least IP moves the less work THAT DNS must do to stay.

If you have still questions after.

  • Airport Extreme can amplify two distinct networks?

I have Cox hispeed internet and a simple modem which is divided into two separate networks; one of my computers and the other for support (Apple TV, etc.). My unique adjustable Airport Extreme upward to stimulate each of these networks or I am only able to stimulate a? Thanks for the tips!

I have Cox hispeed internet and a simple modem which is divided into two separate networks; one of my computers and the other for support (Apple TV, etc.).

Not exactly what you mean by "split into two separate networks" here. Do you mean that you have an Ethernet switch connected directly to the modem that is used to make the separation? What is the make & model of the modem as Cox brings you?

Nevertheless, your airport, or pretty much any other wireless router can only a network of 'boost' a single Wi - Fi connection.

  • Charter & Airport Extreme: random drops/disconnects

OK, I'm at the end of my mind to try to get the Charter to work with my wifi from the airport...

After years of strong connectivity, my modem Asus started appearing as "disconnected" Airport utility. I have hard reset the modem, replaced the modem, replaced the coaxial cable to the modem, replaced the 6th gen AirPort Extreme (connected via wan to the modem), hard reset and rebuilt factory default as long as the airport, and the 5th gen Airport (connected by Ethernet at the 6th and in bridge mode) and always keep my modem dropouts or moments where my Airport 6th get suddenly seems to now show activity utility Airport.

I have connected a laptop directly to the Asus without any problems at all, so it's within my network. But I am confused... And very frustrated.

I'm including some settings below, but any help would be appreciated... I don't know what has changed.

Oh, and the two airports are running the latest firmware for their respective models.

    Thank you all!

For the gen 6 Airport extreme, directly connected to the modem via the Wan:

    • Is connected to the Internet via DHCP
      • Configure IPv6 is set to "Link-Local" only (I have checked and don't see that IPv6 is currently active in my Charter service area)
    • Wireless network mode is "Create a wireless network" and I chose the channels for 2.4 and 5 Ghz that I found to be opened via iStumbler
    • Network has the router Mode DHCP and NAT, with an active lease 365 days DHCP and NAT Port Mapping Protocol

For the extreme 5th generation of airport, connected by ethernet to the 6th gen:

    • Is connected to the Internet via DHCP
      • Configure IPv6 is set to "Link-Local" only (I have checked and don't see that IPv6 is currently active in my Charter service area)
    • Wireless network mode is "Create a wireless network" and I selected channels for 2.4 and 5 Ghz as the 6th gen
    • Network is set to "Off (bridge Mode)" router Mode

6th Gen airports have had a lot more problems with the compatibility of the modem that previous generations, so if you have the time... connect the 5th Gen airport to the modem and put in place to do DHCP and NAT to the 6th Gen in bridge... Mode to see how things work out like that.

Charter do not have active IPv6 yet, but they and about all the other suppliers have been the addition of new equipment and changes to their service. This can be a factor in your connection problems.

Yes, I'm sure that the Charter will say that this has had no effect at all on their regular service of IPv4... Since the ISP always claim that they have no issues when you ask them about their service.

If you decide to exchange the Gen 6th and 5th generation, as I suggested above... and you still have trouble connecting... then you are going to have to decide whether to keep the airports and to try another brand of modem... or... keep the modem and try another brand of router.

  • Remote access to Airport extreme

Remote access to the express airport using airport utility.

Can someone help me with a step by step to allow the possibility for me to access my gen 6 ae around outside my home network?  I know some say that this is not without danger.  I know that some people say that you are better to use for mac.  I don't have a Mac. I just want to access router and make changes, if necessary.  I was able to do it on my router lnksys without problem.  I just typed in my IP address and I have been a connection to my router. Since EI is not web interface, I guess I have to use my phone or the buffer using airport utility.

I don't think it's important, but I have a simple setup.  Modem (cox ISPS) connected directly to the router 6 ae. Random devices connected to ports gigabit ae.

    Thank you

Not what you want to hear, but unfortunately, AirPort Utility on an iPhone or iPad cannot do what you want, so cross that one of the list.

And... the utility AirPort older 5.x on a PC does not officially support the new AirPort Extreme 802.11ac... (what do you call a 6th Gen AirPort Extreme)... so I doubt that a PC would work in this case because Apple has not updated AirPort Utility for Windows since Windows 7.

If you can get your hands on a Mac running a current or recent operating system, that's the ticket... If you have a simple modem, AirPort Extreme is set up the router on your network and you know the public WAN IP address that receives the airport.

Taking any router support NAT - PMP protocol or UPnP protocols should be able to support CCMM. Apple router first, while those of non-Apple generally support the latter.

If you are currently satisfied with the performance of your D-Link router, it should not be necessary to replace it with the 6th gen extreme just for the CCMM.

  • Updated AirPort Extreme?

I have a 5th generation AirPort Extreme purchased in 2011.  We have 2 iMacs, 5 iPhones, 4 iPads, 3 Rokus and 1 PC on the wireless network. Most of the devices have ac 802.11.  We have Fios for Internet with 50 / 50 Mbps.  Upgrade to the 6th generation AirPort Extreme offer any wifi speed will increase or is the Fios speed limiter?

The upgrade wouldn't matter because the current model is not faster than the one you have.

  • 2nd airport Extreme not found in Airport utility

I recently replaced an Airport Extreme 6 years with a new one. The former we worked, but the range of its signal seems to have declined, so we replaced.

Now the news is up and running without problem. And I would take the old and use it to extend our network. We already have an Airport Express Terminal to expand the network, so this would add another node.

I moved to its new location and plugged the power cord. It shows the yellow flashing light. However, the old Airport Extreme does not appear in Airport utility. Screenshot attached. There is nothing in the section other devices Wi - Fi.

ZeroOne_nomap-2 is my new base station. AirPort Express of Sunny was already part of the network. The old base station does not appear.

    Any ideas?

You must reset the 2nd Gen AirPort Extreme back to default settings, before it can be put in place to expand the network.

Temporarily, to locate the 2nd Gen airport near the new AirPort Extreme

Turn on the 2nd Gen airport a few minutes

Then hold down the reset button on the back of the airport for 5 to 6 seconds then release

Allow a minute for the airport restart to a slow, flashing amber light status

Now click the WiFi icon at the top of your Mac.

Look for an announcement of the new AirPort base station

Click on AirPort Extreme, just below this list

Who will get the "Wizard" configuration running. It will take a few seconds to display a screen that looks like this, except that you can see your devices and the network name.

Type a name you want to call the 2nd Gen airport

    Click next

The wizard will set up everything for you. When you see an installation message, click done

Now, turn off the power and pass the 2nd Gen to its new location where it can receive a strong signal from the AiPort Extreme 'hand' and turn on the 2nd Gen airport

  • Everyone try to use app VLC with Airport Extreme by car?

I have the new VLC app installed on my Apple TV4. I also have a USB drive connected to my current gen Airport Extreme. I have a video file (Video_TS) residing on the drive from the airport. When I run VLC on the ATV4, under the "local network" menu, I regard the airport as an SMB share. When I connect to the share, I get a message of "empty folder" app VLC.

If I run the VLC app on my iMac I can select content from the airport drive and play it wihtout back issue.

I learn about the network that I proceed. Any help as to how I would get VLC to see the files on my Airport Extreme?

I'm having this same problem. I even tried MrMc with no luck.

  • Can the Airport Extreme connect wireless to my wifi network?

    Hi all

I have an Airport Extreme, which I use only for his Time Machine feature.  Best I can tell the only way he can connect to my wireless network is extending.  Is this correct?

If I use it to extend my wireless network was is the negative impact (if any)?

    Thanks in advance.

You can extend wireless or even join wireless to less the router that you connect to another router from Apple.

If this is the case then it can work well if it is in the range... otherwise, you must plug the AE into the router principal by ethernet and put in place as a separate network wireless access point.

Extend wireless is bad if you are linked to the main router wireless... which will cause huge slow down even if you are in a situation of apple router all.

  • The airPort Extreme (2007) and Time Machine

    Hi all

I read the info "how to ask a good question" and apparently you need details. I'll try and be concise but informative with my problem. It has been a long journey to get to where I am, but hopefully, with a little help from this amazing community, I can get to my destination.

    Task

To produce a backup solution Time Machine for the family spending as little money as possible and using the BRIC and broc, I already have.

    Equipment available

I have a House with some ethernet cables for most rooms that through switches to allow a variety of, most entertainment devices to communicate. It is:

    1 x NAS/Media (ReadyNAS Duo v2) server,

    2 x TV (Samsung),

    2 x TEU (Beyonwiz),

2 x Apple TV (a 2 nd generation the other is the latest version)

    2 x DVD players,

    1 x iMac.

    2 x 8-port switches,

    1 x 16 switch ports,

    1 x AirPort Extreme (2007).

1 x Airport Express (age unknown but older than the extreme)

    1 x Fritz! Box 7490 Modem/Router

    Courses in place

All the associated TV stuff are connected in 2 rooms through ethernet via switch 2 x 8 ports switch 16 central port and then to the Fritz! modem/router box.

There are also all the usual WiFi going on with mobile phones, iPads and laptops.

Remarkably, it seems just to work!

However, I want to add some backup data on our computers. I tried to do by using the ReadyNAS as it is supposed to support Time Machine, but I can't it to appear as a backup destination. So, I thought, as I have AirPort Extreme, I add it to the network and attach a USB HDD for Time Machine since it is supposed to be easy. However, I've been home for hours and cannot make the HARD disk appear in system preferences/Time Machine.

I plugged the Airport Extreme in one of the switches 8 port said to create a wireless network with the same details as the Fritz! The box according to another article of the support (Airport Extreme wired AND expand network - need of entry). Airport utility shows me Wi-wired connections and seems to work.

I look at the AirPort Extreme disks tab and can see the attached USB drive here. However, it does not appear as a choice of drives available for backup in Time Machine preferences. I tried 2 different discs with the same result.

    The Question (finally)

How can I get Time Machine preferences to show the USB disk attached to AirPort Extreme as a valid choice for backups? If anyone can give me a little help in the right direction, I would be very grateful.

    Thank you for reading this,

    Grant

Unfortunately, the key here is that the version of AirPort Extreme you have does not officially support Time Machine backups on a drive to the USB port of the device.

The only version of the AirPort Extreme, which will officially support Time Machine backups on a drive in the USB port on the airport is the 802.11ac current version that looks like a "tower". Older versions of 'flat and square' of the AirPort Extreme don't support Time machine with a USB drive attached.

To check, please see "Time Machine in charge of USB drives" in this Apple support document... AirPort base stations: discs on USB - Support Apple

Support for time Machine to USB drives

OS X Time Machine supports compatible USB drives encrypted, related to the time Capsule (802.11n and 802.11ac) AirPort and AirPort Extreme (802.11ac).

Given that the average life of most wireless routers lasts about 5 years, and your AirPort Extreme seems to be about 9, your AirPort Extreme did very well for you... much better than the average. It might be time to start thinking about a replacement who will be responsible for backups Time Machine... either a time Capsule (i.e. an AirPort Extreme with a built-in hard drive) or another AirPort Extreme.

  • explosion of comcast Airport extreme Setup

Recently, I upgraded my Comcast for a Blast 150Mbps connection.  However, through to 2015 Airport Extreme, I get only ~ 40-70Mbps, so that if I bypass it with the CAT5 directly in my Macbook Pro, I get what I should be 130-150 Mbps.  What should I do to set the base station to get it and my surfboard SB6121 to play nice with each other?

    Thanks in advance,

    David

Unfortunately, the series of Arris/Motorola SB61XX modem seems to be incompatible with the base stations of 802.11ac AirPort (potentially, 802.11n models as well.) This is not bad in themselves, they just don't "play well" together. Typical questions are interrupted connectivity and low rate of transfer via the WAN - LAN interface. Two models of replacement recommended: Zoom 5341J & the Cisco DPC3008.

Regardless, it is recommended to use a modem that is approved by your ISP.

In addition, a number of large ISPS were the deployment of IPv6. You can check if your AirPort Extreme is properly configured for this service. Comcast has provided this link.
