Archives photo library of iCloud?

When I take pictures on my iPhone, my ideal process would be:

(1) pix from the phone go to iCloud

(2) pix to iCloud downloaded the photos on my Mac

3) once on my Mac, pix never get deleted photos except if I explicitly

In other words, the CMA should be archiving, and I should be able to remove the pictures from the phone and iCloud without deleting the Mac.

In practice, #1 and #2 work fine. Problem is that if I delete a photo on the phone, it disappears from my Mac as well.

I can't find a way to keep these photos on my Mac, short export files of Photos. Surely, there must be a better way?

Note that I don't have the parameter 'Download the originals of this Mac' is enabled in settings iCloud in Photos. This does not seem to prevent the deleted, however the pictures.

I use OS X 10.11.6 and iOS 9.3.5.

That's because iCloud photo library is designed for synchronization, not as an external storage, as your probably know. New photos imported from any device download to iCloud photo library as the centralized storage. Modifications and changes to the photos of any device will synchronize to iCloud and updated on all devices, including the removal of the pictures. iCloud Library maintains library on all identical devices.

I can't find a way to keep these photos on my Mac, short export files of Photos. Surely, there must be a better way?

For your desired workflow, Thomas, I recommend to create a second photo library on your Mac, your Photos of Archive library, which is not synchronized with iCloud.

Let the synchronization of photos from iPhone to your iCloud photo library and upload to the library on your Mac that is synchronized with iCloud. Then transfer them to your library Archive by export and re-import.  Or invest in pictures of power for easy transfer photos between libraries of Photos.

The alternative, which recommends Apple, is to abstain from remove photos from iOS devices and use the "Optimize storage" option on the iPhone.  Keep your comprehensive library on the iPhone optimized version.

I have used this approach for a few months. My iPhone and iPad have 64 GB of storage, and that worked somehow, but is a pain, because we cannot control which photos will get 'optimized '. It's a pain, if I want to create a slide show and pictures are underway in iCloud only Internet available.

I switched back to my photo stream to download new photos from my iPhone and disabled iCloud photo library on my iOS devices, I'm only using iCloud photo library to keep Macs in sync.

  • move the external drive photo library to iCloud

I just bought the option 1 TB, for my 300 GB library. With my MBP, I use an external hard drive, but I won't use it... So I sent the 300 GB, but if I start the Photo, there's still the library on disk external HARD... is not possible to use iCloud as the main library?

    Thank you very much.

iCloud library is essentially a synchronization services to keep your library in iCloud as centralized storage and reference to synchronize all volumes.  If you change a photo to one of your libraries on one of your devices, the changes will be updated in iCloud and synchronize all of your devices that are synchronizing with iCloud photo library. All libraries on all synchronized devices will always display the same pictures, montages, albums, metadata.

So you will need a library t sync with your Mac.  To save storage, you can use the "Optimize Mac storage" option in the preferences to iCloud. Then the image original high-resolution fies will be stored only in icloud and your Mac will replace them with smaller and optimized, versions if the storage is not enough for the version high resolution.

  • Old photos have not been deleted, even if it's been more than 2 months and keep crashing the photo library in icloud.

Earlier this year, I used the library to icloud to back up my photos. Everything worked well. After awhile, I deleted the photos and off synchronization from photo library. Today, I decided that I wanted to use again, so I turned it on. It seems to work fine but when I connect to my PC I have the chance to see the old photos have not been removed. They seem to be corrupt (there is an exclamation mark instead of a thumbnail) and I can not open them, instead the library hangs. It has been more than 2 months, I suppose that even if I forgot to delete some photos, they should be gone now. Is there a way to fix this?

    a few things

1 - iCloud Photo is not a backup - it's a synchronization service - see FAQ-apples iCloud Photo library FAQ - Apple Support

    More precisely

    Do I need a backup?

ICloud library stores all of your photos and original videos in iCloud, but we still recommend that track you return of copies of your library. You can upload your photos and videos to iCloud on your computer and store them in a separate library, transfer them to another computer with transfer of images or Photosor store them on a separate disk.

2 - ICPL can be accessed through Safari - connect to iCloud.com can click on the picture and see what's there - look in the recently deleted album and see what's there

  • How to restore a photo library using iCloud on a MacBook?

I now use iCloud for back up my entire library (more than 200 GB).  How to restore a photo library (including all data of pictures like faces, events, etc.) on my MacBook Pro when my MacBook Pro needs to be replaced?

I used historically Time Machine to backup and restore my library when my photo library migration to another laptop.  However, I now do not have a backup Time Machine full of my library because the library is too large to store locally.  So now, I'm opting for storing it on iCloud to Apple servers using their 'optimize' Photos option.  Now, if I replace my laptop, I would be sure that as transparent as Time Machine restore solution is to obtain and import the Photo library (for example, the index of all my photos, events / files, location tags, face tags, etc.) on my new laptop directly from iCloud.

Enjoy any clarity in iCloud library restore capabilities!

I now use iCloud for back up my entire library (more than 200 GB).  How to restore a photo library (including all data of pictures like faces, events, etc.) on my MacBook Pro when my MacBook Pro needs to be replaced?

You can create an empty photo library on your new Mac, and then enable iCloud photo library for this new library of Photos.  The library will download icloud, and most of the elements will be restored.

But iCloud is not a backup. It's a centralized storage to keep all libraries updated on all your devices.

There are some things that will not be restored to iCloud, for example the albums faces or your projects.

This document describes how a library will be uploaded to iCloud to another Mac:

Use iCloud photo library on several Mac - Apple Support computers and Photos

After have connected you, these items appear in the Photos on your Mac app:

    • All photos and original videos
    • All folders and albums
    • Smart albums
    • Keywords
    • Keywords from searches of the tile faces
    • Key photo selections

These items are available only on the Mac where you created the:

    • Books, cards and calendars
    • Slideshows
    • Keyword shortcuts
    • Unused keywords
    • Last album imported (this album contains photos you have imported recently on a specific Mac)
    • Facing tiles and faces of the data

I is not entirely based on iCloud as a backup of your photos, but sometimes create a copy of your photo library on an external drive. In this way, you can restore your library, even if you are having problems with the internet connection, and it will be faster.

  • Photo library on iCloud and on my Mac?

Now that I use iCloud for my Photo library, I can access of course from other devices, including another Mac. But not from the original Mac where I had the library on an external drive. Whenever I want to open Photo on the Mac, it will search the library on this external drive... so, what's the point of having the library on an iCloud? The reason why I wanted to iCloud had to move more freely and do not have to connect to each time the drive.

Looking for answers on this topic, I can not find. Everyone out there can throw me a light? Thank you.

iCloud library is mirrored on your Mac. So the behavior you see is expected.

  • How can I delete my photos in the photo library of iCloud?

I placed my entire photo library - some 40 GB in iCloud photo library.  Everything seems to work quite well.  I keep the originals on my Mac.  I noticed that the optimized on my iPhone and iPad versions are beginning to produce a tightening of the memory on the last two.  I want to do is delete my iCloud photo library and start over with a subset of my main library - just five years with a value of photos that are about 10 GB.  How to achieve this?

Make sure any time original photos are on your mac and iCloud library off on all devices - will delete all the photos in iCLoud in 30 days - then set the library smaller that the library system and turn on ICPL and the new smaller library will be transferred to ICPL
