My "activity manager" shows that, at least 4 times in the last hour, pieces of 200 messages have been deleted. However, it shows as 200 messages have been downloaded. This introduced the Inbox a little more up-to-date (in early April), but still leaves gaps for the previous and most recent messages. The total number of messages in my Inbox was less than 1000, I don't think it's a capacity problem. Any ideas?

  You see the disk cleanup option if you click on Start -> all programs -> Accessories -> System Tools?

  If you see it there, you can just right click on it and click on send to -> desktop (create shortcut) to get it on your desktop.
