  Thank you for your message.  First start by going to your computer manufacturer's website and download/install the latest driver for your device.  We will check the following:
  Click 'Start' > right click on 'Computer' > select 'manage '.
  Click on Device Manager.
  Expand "readers of CD-ROM/DVD-ROM" (you see a yellow!, or you see your drive at all?)
  If you don't see any of your drive, you may need a bad connection of your drive power to the motherboard or power.

  Unfortunately it's probably :-(. You can try to remove the optical drive and then reinsert it into Notepad, and then marketing and see if it is recognized as a new device.

  Check also that it is not displayed in Device Manager and if it is remove before trying the above.

  Try this - Panel - Device Manager - CD/DVD - double-click on the device - driver tab - click
  Update the drivers (this will probably do nothing) - then RIGHT click the drive - UNINSTALL - REBOOT
  This will refresh the default driver stack. Even if the reader does not appear to continue below.
  
  Then, work your way through these - don't forget the drive might be bad, could be a loose cable or
  slight corrosion on the contacts (usually for a laptop) and other issues.

  Another possibility is that the cables are loose. Remove ALL power, then make sure that the cables in both
  ends. Remove and replace, do not just tight. For laptops, you can often clean power and
  contacts data with a pencil eraser.

  Some DVD players do not use the Windows default drivers so check with the manufacturer of system and
  manufacturer of device to see if there is a firmware or drivers for your drive if necessary.

While in the Device Manager, I clicked and uninstalled devices and then restarted the computer, hoping that the pilots would be automatically reinstalled correctly.   Solved! No. thanks to HP. Even if I had never opened the file on my PC and make sure that the cable DVD could not be disconnected, I decided to look for.   I just took delivery of a Toshiba Satellite A300 under Vista Home Premium. I can't find the DVD drive when I goto it and even I can not access the disk drive for loading software, DVD etc.

  When I had first the machine DVD player was working fine, but after trying to load TV Pinnacle and SimCity4 tuner it stopped working and is no longer present in my computer.
