    Hello Russbude!

Here are the instructions that you need to follow in order to allow the ability to unlock your Mac with your Apple Watch. I will also link to the Apple Guide which are instructions, in this way, you will have access to the manual for future reference. Good luck!

Unlock your Mac with Apple Watch

If you have a Mac (2013 or later version) with macOS Sierra, your Apple Watch can instantly unlock your Mac when he wakes up from his sleep. You must be connected to iCloud by using the same identifier Apple on your Mac and Apple Watch.

To use Auto unlock, you must have a password for your Apple Watch - open settings , type the password, type activate password on, and then follow the instructions on the screen.

Turns on automatic unlocking. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Security & Privacy, and then click general. Check the box "Allow your Apple Watch unlock your Mac". If you have not enabled your iCloud of two factor authentication account, follow the instructions on the screen, and then try to select the check box again.

For more information about two-factor authentication, see the article Apple Support for Apple ID two-factor authentication.

  • Apple Watch unlock Mac Setup Frustration

I own a first generation of Apple Watch and an end 2013 13 "MacBook Pro and last mac mini (i5). I went through the entire setup process to have my watch unlock my MacBook several times. (All along the) When I get to choose the button "Allow your Apple Watch unlock your Mac", it runs for awhile and then I get the "unable to contact Apple Watch" fast. It seems to be my watch because if I try and let the Apple Watch locked, she'll tell me to unlock, and then try again. Happens on MacBook Pro and mac mini in the same way.

I tried to research on this problem and we tried all authentication reset to two factors for an agreement again all settings and turn it on again.

    Any thoughts?

    Thank you!

    Hello pgirardi,

I appreciate that you try to unlock your two computers using your Apple Watch with watch OS 3.  The resources below provide the steps and requirements to do this.  I would just try it with a single computer until you have a job before trying the second computer.

Automatically unlock your Mac with your Apple Watch

The first time you open a session after you turn on or restart your Mac, connect by entering your password manually. After that, Apple Watch connects to you.

    Set up automatic unlock

Make sure your Apple Watch uses watch OS 3, and your Mac to mid-2013 or newer model uses macOS Sierra.
For more information, see system requirements of continuity.

    Automatic unlocking

Automatic unlock works with these devices and operating systems:

    watchOS 3 macOS Sierra
    • Apple Watch (1st generation)
    • Apple Watch series 1
    • Apple Watch series 2

    • MacBook (early 2015 or newer)
    • MacBook Pro (late 2013 or newer)
    • MacBook Air (mid-2013 or newer)
    • Mac mini (late 2014 or newer)
    • iMac (late 2013 or newer)
    • Mac Pro (end of 2013 or later)

Make sure your Apple ID to use instead of the two-step verification two factor authentication. Learn more.

Make sure that your devices are configured as follows:

    • Your Mac has Bluetooth and Wi - Fi enabled.
    • Your Mac and Apple Watch are connected to iCloud with the same Apple ID.
On your Mac, choose Apple () menu > System Preferences, and then click iCloud.
On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, then go to general > Apple ID.
    • Your Apple Watch uses a password.
On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, then type the access code.
    • Your Mac has "allow your Apple Watch unlock your Mac" selected in Security & Privacy preferences.
Choose the Apple menu > System Preferences, click on Privacy & Security, then select the general tab.

pgirardi, if you are unable to unlock your main computer after trying these steps, then you will need to cancel the match your iPhone and Apple Watch and try again.

Cancel the match your iPhone and Apple Watch

    Take care.

  • Apple Watch unlock Mac does not

I have a first generation of Apple Watch and a spring 2015 MacBook Pro, which I just installed Sierra. When I tried to enable to release the Mac with Apple Watch he didn't even after a number of tests, but eventually he agreed.

Now, however, I believe that if I leave my MacBook for a few minutes and come back, it will say that the Apple Watch unlocks the Mac, the small waiting wheel goes around and around, but after maybe 8 or 9 seconds it drops just go back to the password entry screen. The net result is a considerable delay to return on the MacBook. After this happened a few times, I have disabled unlocking with the Apple Watch in the preferences.

Any ideas why this happens? Normally, my iPhone is also nearby and the watch is associated with it - does make a difference?

Do you have any Bluetooth device that is connected to your Mac? I had the same problems with the feature to unlock, then I noticed that the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar show he was matched (three points through the center of the symbol) even if I had nothing paired with my laptop. I open Bluetooth preferences and delete the two devices which are listed and which had been previously connected, but were not currently connected. After the removal of these items, the Bluetooth symbol returns to its normal look unpaired, and the release device started working 100%.

I then tried to experiment a little. First of all, I have associated my Bose speakers. 100% failure, required my password every time. Then, I have not matched the speaker and paired with an Apple Magic mouse. This gave rise to a rate of 50% of failure but still worked when I clicked on cancel, then tried recording in. I have not tried any other devices or multiple as a mouse and a keyboard.

  • Allow your Apple Watch unlock your Mac - box missing

    Hello

Yes, all my devices running the latest OS - watchOS 3, iOS10, macOS Sierra (iPhone 7, iPad mini 4, MacBook Pro 12.1, Apple Watch) all signed the same iCloud, 2 authentication account activated - so everything according to the instructions.

Interestingly, the box was causing it (under privacy and security on the Mac), it was when I had still activated authentication step 2, but once I disabled that & activated authentication factor 2 - the box disappeared and never came back.

Yes, I disconnected icloud on Mac, & into the new.

    Off hand is also activated.

I spent all morning on this, it is now, I want lessee a string of expletives.

Can someone help me get this box?

    Thank you

    Jason

I also had this problem. He was there at the beginning, and when I checked it, it gave me the error alert that I need to change 2 factor authentication. I did and then the box disappeared. I rebooted each device, etc... What worked was signing off iCloud desktop and then signing right back. Always a little nervous racking when you remove your contacts and calendars. But just make sure that you are supported, etc.

  • Let Apple Watch unlock Option in SystemPreferences

I have an OS3 2014 MacBook Air, OS of the Sierra, watch, two-step authentication, same iCloud account, connected to the same network wifi, bluetooth on, password and password on all devices, watch and phone are secure devices, etc. etc.

The Option unlock article in the security and confidentiality of the preferences section.  A note under the Option unlock indicated that I had to cut two-stage verification and turn both authentication step I made.  Now, this is not the Option of unblocking.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you!

When you turn off the old "2 -step" and turn on the new "2 -factor", I think that it causes some of your devices to get stuck in an intermediate state. ' "." You must go to each one and check that it is fully committed the new authentication 2.

On your phone, go to settings-> iCloud and type your name or account. He may ask you to re - enter your password and complete the process of factor 2. If she doesn't ask, you're probably OK on this device - but if you want to be absolutely sure that you can restart your phone, or as a last resort disconnect you from icloud and vice versa in.

On your mac, go to system-> iCloud preferences and click on "Account Details". The rest is the same as above.

The watch is the delicate issue - for that, try restarting. Press the side button until you see the cursor "turn off". When you turn it on again, he can say he can't connect to icloud, and you must retype your password on the phone. And you phone should invite you once again (even if you have entered it correctly before). Once this is done, you should see the option in your Mac system preferences (even if it may take a moment for him to synchronize).

  • Auto unlock with Apple Watch does not

    Hello

I followed all the instructions and advice of all Web sites without success, my watch is on my wrist, unlocked and the Mac cannot communicate with the watch, or when he's on the odd occasion that the watch is not open the Mac, I still have my password.  I have not matched and repaired the watch, and the new registered in iCloud, transfer off and on again, the watch, the 6s iPhone and watch are all connected to the same network still with no luck.  This should be an ongoing and easy process as most of the functions of apple, but it just doesn't work and it is the function that I was more enthusiastic in this upgrade of the software, feels a bit like false advertising if it's this hard to operate.  Can apple be solve this problem or can help a tech guru

If the problem is that when you check the box "Allow your Apple Watch unlock your Mac" in security pref pane it breaks down and said that one cannot communicate with your watch?

You have Bluetooth and Wi - Fi enabled?  If so, try to restart your Mac, iPhone and look, and check the box again.  Also sometimes if you just wait a few hours and try to check the new it will finally work.

  • Unlock Mac Pro with Apple Watch

I just downloaded the new OS of Sierra and have the newest OS on my iPhone and watch.  I tried to set up to where I can unlock my Mac with my watch, but can't seem to understand. Everything I read said I should check the box that says allow your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac. in respect of the security and confidentiality under general. Only problem is that I can't find such a thing anywhere... Any suggestion would be great.

You're supposed to open preferences system (on your MacBook), go to Security & Privacy and then check the box that says "allow your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac". And it has not worked for you?

Is your Apple Watch under the same Apple ID as your MacBook? If not, this is why it does not work. Otherwise... I don't really know.

  • Apple Watch will not unlock MacBook

I have a Macbook 2016 on MacOS, iPhone 6 more current iOS10 of execution, first-generation Apple Watch running Watch OS3 and two steps on authentication.  As shown in the screenshot below, I was able to check the possibility of allowing my Apple Watch unlock my Mac.  He looked the watch and then checked.  I did this several times, however, it will not unlock the Mac.  New features to copy and paste between devices, etc seem to work well, but I can't get the unlocking function to work.

    Hello wow321,

Thanks for asking for help with unlocking you Macbook with your Apple Watch here in Apple Support communities. We commend you for updates latest and your devices. Also, please check the things you already checked. I will do my best help to offer things to get this working as expected.

I have personally reviewed article for help to unlock your Mac with your Apple Watch which is here: automatically unlock your Mac with your Apple Watch. The first thing we want to do is to check that everything is correctly configured through this step by step article once more.

A confusing area for some people is the type of security on their Apple ID. The State of necessity who need a Apple ID to use instead of the two-step verification two factor authentication. Please check the type of security on your Apple ID using this help article that deals with two factor authentication: authentication two factor for Apple IDand this second article of help dealing with two-step verification: frequently asked questions about two steps checking of Apple ID.

If any snippet and you still have questions, I recommend you make a backup of all your data on your iPhone to make sure that everything is safe. You can perform a backup to iCloud or iTunes. Use this article to help with this: backing up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Then, try to turn the iPhone, with the Apple Watch is paired both devices Mac, power off and on. Sometimes, that's all that is needed for connections reset and everything working properly again.

If you're still having problems, please cancel the twinning of your Apple Watch from your iPhone by following the steps described here: pairing your Apple Watch and iPhone. Reset the network settings on your iPhone under settings > general > reset > reset network settings. This will remove not your personal information (contacts, photos, calendar of events, etc.), but it will remove networks WiFi recorded and passwords, as well as all the APN or previously used VPN settings and Bluetooth devices connected. After the reset of the iPhone, pair your Apple Watch with your iPhone again and check if the Apple Watch can then unlock your Mac.

Thanks again for asking for help with this here in Apple Support communities. Have a great rest of your day.

  • Automatic implementation of release with Apple Watch

Is there a list of hardware that supports Auto unlock with the Apple Watch on macOS Sierra? I found a walkthrough on 9to5 mac, which explains how to set up, but the option simply does not appear in the security and confidentiality of the parameters of my iMac end of 2012.

It seems that it's quite common in the comments on article of 9to5, but I found no official explanation from Apple on why this option is not displayed.
