AVG free antivirus or microsoft security essentials! What is the best?

Ive got a dell inspiron 1525 and I have windows vista 32 bit. I don't know if I have to use security essentials package or avg anti-virus. I can also use the mcafee security suite. I just need some experienced or professional advice and appreciate it if someone could help me! Thank you!

Everyone has their own personal likes/dislikes to security programs!
You opened a can of worms!

And security Suites(Norton, Trend, McAfee) are just Bloatware.
They try to be everything to everyone and fail.
They also use a lot of your system resources to run.

I do not use one of them; AVG or MSE.
There are bad reports about the compatibility of the 9.0 AVG and MSE is a new kid on the block.
I'll wait and see how MSE pans.

I use builtin Vista Firewall.

I use Avast AV:

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Avast anti-virus is XP, Vista and Windows 7 compatible, FREE, automatic update, and a user of low resources from your computer.

And, don't have 1 (one) anti-virus installed / running on your computer at any time.

Conflicts, crash and freezing may occur if you have more than 1 (one).

And for an Anti-malware program:

http://www.Malwarebytes.org/MBAM.php

Malwarebytes is as its name suggests, a Malware Remover!

Download the free Version from the link above.

Download, install, upgrade and scan once a fortnight.

Something for you to think.
Once others have also responded, weigh the pros and cons of each.

See you soon.

    Nothing to help.
Answer has been given to you as to why MSE stops Windows Defender. In short, you don't need Windows Defender when you have MSE.

If there is another reason why you need to activate Windows defender, please after return of reason.

  • Satellite Pro A300: Problem with Microsoft Security Essentials

    Hello

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro A300 with XP SP3 and now deleted AVG Free and installed Microsoft Security Essentialls (MSE).

The result is after installing MSE and begin my laptop cursor is stuck in the center of the screen and will not respond to the inputs of the mouse or the keyboard.

In aid of F12 to get my startup options allowed me to try the Safe Mode and last known good Configuration etc but they all show the same functionality, IE freeze when the desktop appears. XP seems to be operating in the background, for example system clock stays on time, "notice" system if its wifi singal is removed etc.

Just to make the day to try to do an OS reinstall pressing 0 to on has no effect - system just boots in XP - so I can't my recovery partition!

I have now is not a HW problem as the /kbd cursor works if I boot into a non-windows system, for example UBUNTU CD

Any suggestions welcome - such as can I download a recovery on antother PC CD and burn a recovery CD?

    Hello

I have no idea what happened after installing Microsoft Security Essentials, but it seems that you are not able to access the files on the HARD drive
I think you need to reinstall the operating system using HARD drive recovery.
    http://forums.computers.Toshiba-Europe.com/forums/Ann.jspa?annID=58

But this would format the system partition :(

In order to save the files from the HARD drive, I recommend using / boot from a bootable floppy from Win PE.
Win PE (also called BartPE) is a thin window OS that is bootable CD and don t need to be installed on the HARD drive.

  • Take off a laptop M4700 Win 7 of trend and put Microsoft Security Essentials on the results in a freeze during startup

I have a laptop Dell Precision M4700 which came with Win 7 x 64 final. He also provided Trend AV software. When I try to remove the trend, it seems to have problems, but after a reboot, it seems to be off the system. Then, I try to install MSE which seems fine and can even update and run a scan. However, the first time that I reboot after installation, the system hangs on "Starting Windows" screen I reinstalled but unfortunately the recorded windows also includes the trend s/w and it shows the same problem.

I still have an old Latitude D830 that I have upgraded to Win 7 x 64 Ultimate. It works fine MSE. He had no preloaded trend and drivers are a little different due to different materials,

    Any ideas?

    Hi hajk,.

It could be a possibility that the Trend antivirus software has not been uninstalled completely. We can use the uninstall tools provided by the manufacturer of Trend antivirus software to uninstall the software and then install Microsoft Security Essentials. Use the following link to download the uninstall utility based on the version of the antivirus installed on the computer Trend software:

Trend Micro Worry - Free Business Security Services: http://bit.ly/112g0A7

Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security: http://bit.ly/172zNU5

After you download the uninstall utility, run the file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstall. Restart the computer and use the following link to download Microsoft Security Essentials: http://bit.ly/14pG1fw

    Please post the results.

  • Why are there redundant for Microsoft Security Essentials download sites?

    Original title: Microsoft Security Essentials:

At the insistence of some other people on this community, I decided to start another thread for this exact same topic:

Why are there redundant for Microsoft Security Essentials download sites? I went on the first site in my search on the web:

    http://www.Microsoft.com/en-US/Download/details.aspx?ID=520

It looks pretty official to me, however, there is only one problem with the above site. Download options are way too vague for us lay people. After publication on the website of MS Community, I was quickly corrected on my ad which does not seem to be an idle thread and offered a link to download the instructions and frequently asked questions that did not work. Much later, I was offered another site to download with different language options and a more detailed description of download:

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/Security-Essentials-all-versions

Well, I have to ask the same question again, but in a different way: why society billions of dollars allows this kind of nonsense (multiple and various download sites on the web) occur under their name? Excuse me if I look a little frustrated on this problem, but I am!

Here's what the site was used initially. I still don't know which version to download for use on this site. The only distinction: "amd64" or "x 86". I don't know looking below that mean both.

    Version:
    Date of publication:

    4.4.0304.0

    10/11/2013

    Name of the file:
    File size:

    ENUS\amd64\MSEInstall.exe

    13.0 MB

    ENUS\x86\MSEInstall.exe

    10.6 MB

Download sites are for companies and technicians who need to deploy these.  Basically, the people who understand and who need these details.

For consumers (users of this community site), the printable page is simply microsoft.com/security_essentials

Here, you can easily get the version you need.

  • E520 stock Windows 7 and Microsoft Security Essentials.

We recently got a new E520 Edge to one of our teachers, had met with an interesting question.

When you install Microsoft Security Essentials, on reboot, the Microsoft Antimalware Service goes from automatic to manual and the service is stopped.

Before you start saying "Infected" do not forget that this system is straight out of the box and had not been on the internet for something else to install MSE. I also restored to the factory settings and tried again with the same results.

A process that is to recreate it:

    (1) restoration of the system to the original image. (first attempt was out of the box)

    (2) strengthened with the Standard Windows 7 OOBE.

    (3) after the Windows 7 OOBE, a Lenovo window appears asking to activate Norton Internet Security 2012

    (4) does not have activate Norton as Norton will disappear. Norton is still installed.

    (5) do not install Office.

    (5) at this point, the desktop appears. So I uninstall Norton Internet Security 2012 and rebooted. (on the first attempt, I used the last Norton Removal Tool)

    (6) upon reboot, connected to the internet, installed Microsoft Security Essentials, upgrade to the latest defs and restarted.

Restart on 7), started Services.msc and looked at Microsoft Antimalware Service. It is started and set to automatic.

    (8) 30 seconds later. Service is set to manual. The service is stopped. MSE has a red icon.

    (9) subsequent reboots will not start MSE automatically. It must be started manually. Put back the service to automatic will be cancelled manually on a restart.

It must be something new added to the Lenovo images, because old E520 images had a different window of Lenovo who install Norton after asking the user, and MSE works very well on them, and I'm half tempted to wipe the hard drive and install that version on this laptop because I have restore media , but before I do, someone has a idea what installed app or rest Norton kills MSE program?

    He solved.

Made a ton of tests on the laptop and followed the Lenovo RapidBoot problem. Looked for an update, and of course, there is an update that corrects a but in Lenovo RapidBoot affecting the Microsoft Antimalware service manual. Given that the system update does not seem to have the update available, here is the link to get the latest version.

  • Impossible to update of Windows Media Player and Microsoft Security Essentials and the error is "access denied error 80070005."

Apparently an involuntary change of administrative privileges or permissions (Windows XP Pro, SP3) keeps me updated Media Player version 9 to 11 v. and updated virus Security Essentials definitions.
For Media Player, wmsetup.log reports access denied error 80070005 and UpdSpAPI.log reports access denied for the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Settings\MP3Encoding\LowRate registry key. In regedt32, I'm blocked from display HKLM\...\MediaPlayer\Settings and below, and "are allowed to view the current permission settings, but... can make a change." Except that I can't. I can enter the change but get «...» Access is denied"trying to apply them. So this is the first problem that I need help.
But of course it's more than a registry key and the subkeys, because MSE too is affected and will download but not install virus definitions. WindowsUpdate.log reports: failed to install with error 80070643.
My user account (it's the only one!) is part of the Administrators group and all that I tried to verify administrative permissions is positive. This is a new issue. No virus/malware, according to MSE, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, MalWarebytes Anti-Malware.

  • Windows Defender and Norton Internet Security? What are the differences, and that I would be better off with NIS.___NIS it has automatic connections which is great.___Thank you. Dennis__

    None

Windows Defender is an antispyware software.  In itself, it does not all the protection your computer needs.

Norton Internet Security is a suite of programs, including antivirus, antispyware, firewall, antispam and others.

Windows 7 consumer security software providers shows those and other opportunities.

I'm not a fan of security suites.  On my computer, I use the free program of Microsoft Security Essentials antivirus and antispyware protection integrated in Windows 7 is Windows Firewall .

  • Microsoft Security Center icon in the toolbar State but deleted program. How to remove it?

I use a HP Pavilion a1510n, XP Home Edition, Media Center Version 2002 Sv Pk 3 AMD 64 Oricessir 869 MB of RAM.  Recently loaded Skype and Explorer 8.

I removed my Microsoft of their Security Center security bases a couple of weeks and installed Malwarebytes' Anti Malware 1.51.2.1300.

I had reinstalled Microsoft security essentials and when the program began to run, there were two icons in the status bar... a 'protected' with indicator showing green and others a red shield with a white "x" inside... I was never able to remove this red shield of the plateau.

I looked everywhere I know, research, program files Windows, etc, but I can't find anywhere on the computer where every bit of this program are still installed. I now use only Malwarebytes... I understand it should only run an anti-virus/malware both program.

If anyone can help me get this icon off my tray it will be appreciated... Thank you all...

In the run box, type: msconfig and click OK. On the Startup tab, go to:  msseces and uncheck the box. Under the Services tab scrolling in the: Microsoft Antimalware Service and uncheck the box. Click on apply, click OK. Restart your computer.

When the computer reboots, put a checkmark in the box not to get the popup again.

If these two lack the startup and control services: Control Panel, administrative tools, Services. Scroll up to: Microsoft Antimalware Service double click it and change the type of boot to disabled, click OK.

If there is no entry in the Services or the icon does not go far, follow these steps.

In the run box, type: regedit and navigate to:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    \SOFTWARE
    \Microsoft
    \Windows
    \CurrentVersion
    \Explorer
    \TrayNotify

Click on the Board to notify and right-click on icon stream and click on delete. Restart your computer.

Don't worry all other status bar icons are coming back.
