backup failure Time machine - the backup folder creation error

I use a backup drive 1 t Seagate firewire for about 2 years without fail. Now, when you start the backup, I get the following error message:

"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred during the creation of the backup folder. »

In addition to the above message that occurs when I start the backup manually, I get an error message that the backup was properly ejected.

I read the advice "Repair Disk" - this will affect my backups?

Other tips before I take it to the Genius Bar?

ERD will not affect your data. However, before you do something, you must correctly eject disk backup, and then re - attach. Repair the drive to aid first aid disk utility option in the toolbar.

If you first open the Console application in your Utilities folder you will find information in the log of what happened past.

  • Moving backups Time Machine - the operation cannot take place because the backup item is not editable

I want to change the external hard drive that I use for my time machine backups. I went through the steps listed here:

Time Machine: How to transfer backups from a current backup disk to a new backup drive - Apple Support

It seems to work correctly. I shot TM back and adding the new drive. TM is now backing up files on the drive up, but there is a problem.

For some reason, TM has begun to put backups "freely" for lack of better in the external hard drive, and not in the backups.backupdb folder for a week, then returned to save them in the backups.backupdb > ComputerName > files from backups. So in other words, when you click on the hard drive in the finder, it opens the player and you see a folder named Backups.backupdb and then a bunch of mixed in which files are backups time machine named 2016-01-24-XXXXXX, etc.. When you go to the folder Backups.backupdb, there's a more random "loose" time machine backup file 2016-01-23-XXXXXX, and then another folder with the name of computers and in the folder are all TM backups except loose ones I mentioned earlier.

It seems that TM is working properly now, but I don't know why he put the files from the first days outside the backup folder. However, when I do drag, I get the error:

The operation cannot be completed because backup items is not editable

I want to just put all the files in the right folder so that I can A) keep my disk organized and (B) ensure what TM can find everything correctly should I have to go back.

No idea what is happening and how to fix it?

Although the documentation Apple says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it is very slow and sometimes does not.

This technique works only if the volume that you copy to the same size or larger that that you are copying to.

First of all, please open the Time Machine preference pane and click the Select Disk... button. You may be able to unlock the settings first, by clicking on the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window. Log in as administrator.

Remove the volume you want to copy in the list of backup destinations. Then turn off Time Machine.

Launch disk utility, open the built-in Help and search for the term 'Double '. Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be deleted. That shouldn't be a problem, because you do not want to mix non-sauvegarde and backup data on the same drive anyway.

If the volume you are copying has been encrypted by Time Machine, you must first unlock it. Click the release button in the toolbar of the disk utility window.

Turn Time Machine back on and select the new volume as a backup destination. Alternatively, you can continue to use the old volume, if you wish. Both will be alternated when both are available.

ATTENTION: If you copy the volume is corrupted, as shown by the ERD or first aid in disk utility, while corruption is copied to the new drive. Do not copy data from a damaged on a faulty disk volume. Put aside the reader and do not use until you don't know that you no longer need the data. Then securely erase it and bring it to a recycling center. Do the same if the restore operation fails with "disk errors."

  • Backup failure Time machine

After buying a new iMac (retina 5K, 27 inches, end of 2015), I had recurring guests ("Apple backup failed"). I have been through several conversations at levels 1 and 2 and more recently, have been assured that an engineer might contact me on the problem. The iMac will save after reboot; also, if I eject and back up the backup drive (Lacie D2 Quadra). It will be OK for a week or two and then fail again. Yet once I was through a handful of Apple cats, got to the point where I like an engineer ends by contact me, tried any number of reboots in different modes. Anyone have any idea?

These must be run as administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Each message in the journal begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the time stamp of the last 'Start' message that matches the start of a normal backup. Now

DELETE THE WORD 'Start' TO THE TEXT BOX

Select the time-stamped messages since then until the end of the backup or the end of the log if it is not clear. Copy to the Clipboard by pressing Control-C key combination. If all you see are messages that contain the word 'Start-up', you clear the text field.

  • Messaging software - gives a unique Time Machine e-mail folder?

Hi, recently, I accidentally deleted a folder in e-mail software and apparently lost all the content and the folder itself. Can I retrieve an e-mail folder unique to Time Machine, and if so, please can someone tell me how?

    Thank you.

Make a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Go to Finder and select your user folder. With this Finder window as the windshield, select Finder/display/display options for presenting or order - J.  When the display options opens, check "show the library folder. This should make your visible user library folder in your user folder.  Select Library/Mail/V2.  Enter the time Machine and restore the deleted folder.

  • time machine the ignored files

One of my Time Machine backup disks is not back up all files on the drive that I copy. Ignored files are for the most part, the Photoshop files. Everything worked very well so far.

Just a question, do you boored since the restore using CMD + r Partition, then repaired the two disks, then repaired permissions on both?

  • Time Machine the new disk transfer has not moved all the time

I have a Time Machine backup to an external drive. It works very well. However, he was beginning to run out of space, so I bought a new, bigger HD.

I followed all the steps of Time Machine: how to transfer backups from a current backup disk to a new backup drive - Apple Support.

I then waited 12 hours for that copy.

Around midnight, I noticed the copy is complete. There was a message that iWork had not been copied because he needed a different operating system. But I rejected. There are no other messages.

I changed the Time Machine preferences on the new disk. And fell asleep.

This morning, I walked into a Time Machine.

Only the first date from July 2014, was on the new disc of TM. Then there was five times after midnight when the new drive was saved.

But there is nothing in any of the years between the first date and after midnight.

I know that there are hundreds of TM captures on the original disc. And I've used them very well.

I tried to copy individual files from the old drive to TM to the new, but it is not possible to "change the backups."

If this does not work, try to copy the file to disk/restore utility using to copy the backup to a new location. Please note that this will reformat the destination partition.

  • Fusion drive: restore from Time Machine - "the disc cannot be erased."

    Hello

On a new iMac (end of 2015), I need to wipe my drive of Fusion of 3 TB (El Capitan, unencrypted, just 1 partition, no Boot Camp partition) and then restore a backup Time Machine (made on a previous iMac, also with disc Fusion of 3 TB (El Capitan, unencrypted, just 1 partition, no Boot Camp partition).

According to the document from Apple: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904 'restore from a Time Machine backup' I...

    1. restart with cmd + R (later also tried cmd + alt + R and also a USB bootable of course El flash drive)

2 selected "backup restore Time Machine"

3 selected my external backup disk, Time Machine

4 choose the most recent backup

5 selected "Macintosh HD" as a destination and click "continue".

... but then the following message appeared "disc cannot be erased.

Then I tried to erase 'Macintosh HD' via disk utility:

    1. restart with cmd + R (later also tried cmd + alt + R and also a USB bootable of course El flash drive)

    2 choose disk utility

    3 choose "Macintosh HD"

    4. click on tab "delete".

    5. click on the button 'clear '.

... then I got the error message:

"Clear process failed..." Details: Dismantling DIS3 - deletion of logical volumes of the logical volume group - cannot remove the basic storage logical volume. Operation failed... »

I was in the 'loop', the only way out was to "Reinstall Mac OS X", and then after many hours, he had once again my old installation flubbed with everything I wanted to get rid of!

How to restore my backup Time Machine - nothing more or less - to my new iMac?

I lost 3 days now with this problem. I really hope someone has a solution.

    Thank you very much!

Apple did not provide an easy way to recover from this condition. If you are not able to carry out these instructions, please someone more experienced to help you get. One option is to take an appointment 'Genius' on an Apple Store.

Starts the Internet recovery mode by pressing the key combination command-option-R to start ringing. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.

Note: You need an Ethernet or Wi - Fi connection permanent Internet to use recovery. It will not work with modems USB or PPPoE, proxy servers or networks that require a certificate for authentication.

In the OS X Utilities screen, select

    Utilities ▹ Terminal

in the menu bar at the top of the screen, not one of the items in the OS X Utilities window.

Follow the steps in this thread to ASC to split the fuser unit. The long string of letters, numbers and dashes you will need to enter will be different in your case. Copy and paste into the command in the Terminal window.

This will remove all data from the fuser unit, then you had better be sure of your backups.

Quit the Terminal, and then repair the Fusion drive (see "Troubleshooting" on the linked page.)

Quit disk utility. Then you should be able to install OS X and restore your data from a backup in the main screen.

  • Time Machine exclude user folder repeatedly

    Hello

My time machine continues to ignore my user folder. ~ is listed in the exclusions and if I delete it it's just go ~ after that I saved and closed the file of the option (see screenshot)

I'm tempted to remove the relevant com.apple.TimeMachine.plist no success outside the delivery of other time machine preferences.

    Any other suggestions.

Found the solution to reset correctly a plist after deleting, you must reboot until the system tries to establish a new preference setting. Erased all settings and kept cleared, will be useful for other problems as well I think.

  • Cannot remove the ghost folder. Error message: there is no such mailbox

When I configure Thunderbird to connect to my Alpine Webmail, I had to rearrange my folders. Cannot remove a folder titled "mail" because according to TB "there is no such mailbox" but still shows on the tab my folders. I read through the previous discussions and have tried to unsubscribe the ghost folder, but that did not work or the other. I have a Mac OSX if this affects what it is. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thank you.

Hello world. I solved the problem... somehow. By removing the account of Treasury Board and put in place again, TB has been able to sync with the files that were on Alpine. The ghost folder still presented (despite not existing not not on the Alpine site), but by changing the directory to the IMAP server of "mail" to "mailbox" the ghost folder disappeared. I found myself with records who have been named oddly (most likely due to the change of the name of directory) so when I changed the IMAP server directory to "mail" it reset my files with the way they were, with the exception of the ghost folder, that was no longer there. I'm not entirely sure why it worked, but in case someone else has a similar problem, I recommend to give it a try.

1 back up all data. There are ways to back up a computer that is not fully functional. Ask if you need advice. Don't skip this step.

    2. disconnect all external storage devices.

    3. start in recovery mode. Select a language, if you are prompted. The OS X Utilities appears. One of the options is to install OS X. This is not what you do.

    4. This step is only necessary if you use FileVault 2. If you don't know what's FileVault, you use it. Go to the next step. Otherwise, launch utility disk, then select the icon for the volume FileVault ("Macintosh HD", unless you have given it a different name.) It will be nested under another icon of the disc. Select open in the file menu and enter your login password when you are prompted. Then quit disk utility must be returned to the main screen.

    5. Select get online help. Safari will launch. While in recovery, you will have no access to your Favorites, but you won't need them. Load this web page.

    6. triple - click anywhere in the line below to select this option:

    chflags norestricted /V*/*/L*/Keyc*/*

Copy the selected text in the Clipboard by pressing Control-C key combination.

    7. Quit Safari. You go back to the OS X Utilities screen.

    In the menu bar, select

    Utilities ▹ Terminal

Launch the Terminal application. Paste in the Terminal window by pressing the command-V key combination.

Wait for a new line ending with a number sign (#) to appear. Quit the Terminal must be returned to the main screen.

    8. Select

    ▹ Restart 

    in the menu bar.

    9. This step must be performed after the restart, and while you are logged as administrator, not in recovery mode. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Select and copy this line as in step 6:

    sudo xattr -c /L*/Keyc*/*

Launch the Terminal application integrated in one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first letters of his name in a Spotlight search. Select from the results (it should be at the top).

☞ In the Finder, select go utilities ▹ of menu bar or press the combination of keys shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Paste in the same Terminal window. You will be asked for your login password. Nothing displayed when you type. Type carefully, and then press return. If you do not have a password, you will need to configure one before you can run the command. You can get a warning to be careful. Confirm. You don't need to display the warning.

If you see a message that your user name "is not in the sudoers file", then you have not logged as an administrator. Log in as one and start over.

Wait for a new line ending with a dollar sign ($) below what you entered. You can then quit Terminal. Test.

  • Impossible to 'create' Time Machine backup service

I have Mac OS x Server v 5.1.7 running on a Mac mini (2.7 Ghz core i7, 8 GB RAM, mid-2011)) with OSX El Captain (10.11.6).

When I try to add a folder to use as the destination for my backups Time Machine, the button 'create' on the next screen does nothing!

How can I diagnose what is the error (if any?) and how can I work around this?

OK, I've been searching and I found everything about TIME MACHINE on these forums, but my question is still not answered.  My suspicion for why my attempt is a failure is due to the fact that the drive mounted by the mac mini is formatted with NTFS and mounted using Tuxera NTFS for Mac. How can I confirm this? If it is true, is it documented for OSX Server Anywhere? Why is there not an error message or something to help me?

  • What happened to my Time Machine backups?

I'm on Yosemite on a 2012 end Mac mini server, with an external HARD drive, I use for backups.

The short version: I can "enter Time Machine" see my backups, but after restoring my system, my Time Machine configuration seems to have been lost and my Time Machine drive partition so that the backup has a "sparse disk image" bundle inside. (My other partition for backup of my laptop, has a "Backups.backupdb" folder to the root). On the partition of disk for backup of Mac mini, the "Backups.backupdb" folder is the bundle-sparse disk image file. When I "enter Time Machine", I'm assuming that Time Machine looks like in the package of disk for the historical image backups. However, I don't know if it will continue to backup where it was stopped.

Background: this week, I was unable to boot from the hard drive of my Mac mini; There was something wrong with the partitioning which makes the player no longer starts. However, I also had a Windows partition which is bootable, and when I was on Windows I could see all the files on the Macintosh HD partition. Finally, I started in my Windows partition and the partition backup and cloned my Mac partition disk images on my backup drive - to the same partition on the backup drive where lived my backups Time Machine for this drive. Then I reinstalled OS X on the Mac mini.

Surprisingly, when the Mac is started, all my files were already on it and I didn't need to use the Migration Wizard make most anything from the disk image I had cloned. However, when I went to save the newly installed system, I noticed that Time Machine has been configured is more - in the preferences of Time Machine, the oldest backup, and the last time read 'None', and there is no excluded folder. Curiously, however, when I go to "enter Time Machine" it evokes all the backups.

I then compared the partition where I save the Mac mini on the other partition on the backup drive, where I save my laptop. On the partition of the laptop the "Backups.backupdb" folder is at the root. On the partition of backup for the Mac mini, there are three disks images - the clone of the Mac Mini hard drive and HDD Windows bootcamp, and another image called 'Of Paul Mac mini' which is a rare disk image containing all my backups Time Machine.

Is it possible that I can configure Time Machine to ensure continuity with the old backup set? Even if I go up "By Paul Mac mini" Time Machine preferences don't recognize it as a backup drive. Do I have to get rid of, the clone images and copy the files of the sparse image to the root of the backup drive?
