Backup of Windows 7 - poor space management?

I have a 500 GB hard drive that I do not no matter what with except let windows use for the back. I choose the standard backup settings and I woke up this morning, only to find out the hard drive has 5 MB left.

It is said that the distribution of the disk is:

  • Backup of data files - 358.15
  • The system - 101.04 gb image
  • Other files - 6 GB
  • Free space 5 mb
  • Total 465.64

I am currently letting Windows manage the space used for the backup (guess I shouldn't). The point I want to make is that my C: is only 85 GB. The backup worked for over 5 months and I have not made any changes (download of large files). The only option that this software gives me is to remove the entire backup of 14/09/09 to today. Why it can not just delete a month or two it's self? Why have I not delete the history? If the software doesn't have to be smart enough to do that?

Hello MJ-Win7,

Exactly, what is happening with the backup?
You try to perform a backup of some files?
If so, what happens when you try to save, do you get any kind of error message?

We provide more information on the question so that it is useful for understand us to better the issue and to work on the same.

To view and manage your backup disk space:

1. open backup and restore by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking system and Maintenance, and then clicking the backup and restore.
2. click on manage space. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. to change the amount of space used by backups of files, under the backup of data files, click View backups.
You can then select and delete older backups of files.
4. to change the amount of space used by backups of system image, in the image of the system, click on change settings.
You can then choose to have windows save older system image backups or just the last system image backup.

Note: If you have not created a backup, you won't see manage space.

  • I have enough space on the flash drive backup but message says no space.

    Original title: complete PC Backup

I have Windows XP on my computer and try again to back up my computer before a move.  I have two 2 64 GB San disk flash disks that should accommodate more than what I have on my computer.  However, I get the message that one of flash drives is not enough, so I inserted the following - which is not big enough.  Positively, I don't have that much on my computer to consume up to 128 GB of backup space.  Do I need to use a different backup program other than that of the control panel?  Is there another one that is good, useful, fast?  Help!

If you are using in relying on the built in NT backup to back up your system, it is the primitive technology (obviously - since you will be asked for a floppy disk when it is done).  If you have a disaster (even minor), you'll have a big problem trying to retrieve your orders if you do not have a floppy drive - and maybe even if you do not have a floppy drive you are most likely still a big problem if you need to restore your stuff.

If you want to make a backup, an image, or a sort of clone of your system, it makes sense to use modern technology - and that the technology is not integrated into XP.

There are many popular options for XP Backup and imaging software (s) of third parties.

A people a popular seem to like is Acronis.

With this (free 30 day trial) you backup, you can make a bootable CD or bootable USB (which is modern, huh?) and use than disaster.

They used to have a completely free version - maybe no more - just the 30 day trial, and then you have to buy, but it is highly respected.

It is so much more robust than the XP Backup, it's laughable.

There are many other options if you do a little research on Google...

Here are a few products that other users of the forum could be appealing.  Use Google to find and read about their features and capabilities.  Some have free versions, or you can buy to get more features:

If you have a Western Digital drive, you can get a version of Acronis True Image free of WD:

    http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?Swid=119

Or you can get the backup software and cloning separately (this is not an exhaustive list and in no particular order, some are free, some not):

    Acronis True Image Home
    EASEUS ToDo Backup free
Paragon Drive Copy or Partition Manager Personal
    Casper
    Norton Ghost

Some disk cloning software for you to Google ideas:

    XXClone
    Marcium account
    DriveImageXML
    Acronis True Image Home 11
    EASEUS ToDo Backup
Paragon Drive Copy or Partition Manager Personal
    Casper
    Norton Ghost

No matter what method you choose, it is prudent to test your method of end to end to make sure that it works.

You can create a temporary folder somewhere on your system and copy a bunch of files, perform your backup, and then delete the temporary folder and don't forget that you can retrieve your backup.

The day you have your backup/restore process to work is not the day, namely that it does not work.

I use Windows 7 backup tool to back up my files and create a system image. I found a way under "space management" to affect the backup automatically only keep the latest version of the image of my system. Is it possible to do this with the file level backup? I do not want to have to continue to go and Delete older backups?

    Thank you

    Hi David _Triumph Technologies_,.

There is no option available for saving file as its by design you will need to manually delete the backups to free up space.

  • Backup of Windows 7 - change the settings - works does not as expected

I'm trying to configure the backup of Windows 7 by using the "Change settings" option, but when I click on the link, all I get is a the Explorer window showing the contents of c:\Windows\System32

Same thing if I click on the link 'manage space '.

What I am doing wrong? or is it a mistake?

Had the same prob, winlocker and shredder in the context menu, uninstalled winlocker and voila, backup now works.
So, try to uninstall the software that hangs in the context menu (the menu "right click") and see if it works. Not interested in why at that time [is really starting to enjoy my Kubuntu box]

When you use the backup utility Windows 7, I noticed that it does not select a drive that contains more than the backup destination. In my situation, I actually had a file huge virtual machine I is no longer necessary and deleted. This allowed me to continue. Then I realized, Windows 7 backup checks the space then allows you to select the folders to back up. It should be in reverse order. Am I wrong?

    Hello

By design it not prompt you to the available space before the backup. You must manually check before backup. I suggest you follow the steps in the link below.

The entire display is confusing somehow. I have to say that you must tell us which model of laptop you have exactly.
Anyway, here, many made to better understand:
-New notebook models are supplied without recovery Toshiba DVD
-Recovery image is saved in the folder called HDDRecovery on the second partition and partition hidden with recovery image doesn't exist
-It is recommended to create own recovery and therefor DVD, Toshiba has designed little tool called "Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator"
-You can start "Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator", using the shortcut placed on the desktop (factory State)

So to help you please let us know what model of laptop do, you must, folder HDDRecovery is on second partition available and still using the factory settings?

You cannot back up your windows updates... you have to REINSTALL them from the Windows Update program on the computer... no other way around it... insofar as some need to be installed before others are still visible on the computer...

  • Custom development of modules CompactRIO - Embedded window of "missing" project manager

    Hello!

    The scenario:

I am currently working on a custom CompactRIO Module. The material is made for the most part, I installed CompactRIO MDK 1.0 and I want to configure my CompactRIO system and develop the driver VI for my module.

The steps required to configure the cRIO system before you start developing the pilot VI is the following (as mentioned in the documentation of MDK):

    1. launch LabView and select as an execution target FPGA devices. The Embedded project manager window will appear.

    2. Select the file-> New and create a project (LEP) LabView Embedded file.

    3. ...

    Used equipment:

-LabView 2011, a Student Edition license

    -LabView FPGA and real-time modules

    -NIRIO 4.0

    OR-CRIO9024 controller with 8-slot chassis

    The problem:

After the launch of LabView and selecting FPGA as a target (see figure), even by pressing the "Go" button next to the slide in the menu window of Embedded project manager will not appear.

I also tried searching in other menus, without success.

    Issues related to the:

    1. where can I find the Embedded project manager?

2 is it possible, that I can't find the window of Embedded project manager because I have a student licensed LabView?

    3. How can I create a LEP file in this case?

    4. can I use (and if so, how?) the option "create a pilot instrument? (see the attached figure)

    Waiting for answers,

    Levi

    Hello!

After some research, I managed to create the link between my custom cRIO module and LabView.

The complete solution (with LabView 2011):

-Add the line "cRIO_FavoriteBrand = generic ' in the file LabView.INI"

    -Launch LabView

-creation of a vacuum of the project and select FPGA execution target, click OK

-Select 'CompactRIO Reconfigurable Embedded System' as the project type, click Next

-the next step is the detection of the chassis / modules, followed by the creation of the new FPGA project

-Add the custom module: click right on the target FPGA-> New-> C Series-> new target Modules or peripheral-> series C Module-> OK

-Enter the name, select 'generic' module type, enter the location

    Hope it helps someone someday.
