Bad quality on HP Photosmart 5515 and 6510 scan

I just bought a Photosmart HP 6510 all-in-one printer/scanner after my Ditto 5515 broke down. They are good printers, but the quality of the scanned photos is ugly. If I scan a photo in the TIFF format, I expect to get an image uncompressed without artifacts, but these scanners do not clearly deliver that. Shure, they record the files .tif, but if I Zoom in on the image and look at it at 100% or more, I see that the image is full of JPEG compression artifacts.

This means that the scanner will display only the highly compressed JPEG data, and then the scanning software saves a file .tif uncompressed containing the compressed JPEG image data!

The scanner Canon gives a real no compressed .tif, then why can't the HP do the same? The two images are analyzed using native software of each scanner and with the default settings, at 600 dpi, on Windows XP.

My main reason for the purchase of these boxes of HP is exellent on Linux support, which is my main OS. Scanning on Linux gives more or less the same result as under Windows. This leads me to believe that the problem is in the firmware in the scanners, and not in the Windows or Linux software.

Someone at - he experiences the same thing? Anyone with a solution?

If you use the original SW provided with the 6510 from CD, note that it will scan JPG compressed for resolutions > = 600 dpi.  It was for performance reasons.     Scans with 300 dpi and lower are done without compression JPG.

If you download the latest SW Web available for your device, we shipped a newer version of the drivers and the Scan software that allows this is configurable.    In the new version, by default, all scans are performed with the JPG compression to improve the speed/flow.   For almost all customers, this compression is not noticeable and the increase of the scanning speed is dramatic.   However, we allow customers to disable.  Under Advanced settings, you will find a checkbox for "optimize the quality of the Image" setting will force the scans to occur in Raw (uncompressed) mode regardless of the resolution.

If you have original SW, I recommend upgrading to this version and try your scanner 600 dpi with this setting is enabled.

Note that AIO devices typically 'Cook' the scans... like to apply default photo changes, sharpening, tonemaps, etc..    For software/drivers Windows, the default settings for sharpness, gamma, highlight and shadow are all hard-coded default values for general use which may or may not be suitable for all applications.    The only controls adjustable user in our existing Wndows software and drivers are the brightness and contrast.   It is possible that the software and drivers Linux can expose many of these features, but I'm not familiar with this platform.

I do act this application to our team of engineers for future review... more fine tuning of all available parameters.

    I went through several iterations recover my usb drivers and working properly. The last problem seems to be with the printer driver. I have just turned the printer off, removed the two printers from the list of devices and printers, and back in the printer market. The drivers once again and the printer "shadow" is back.

    I tried printing HP and doctor scan, and it is a photosmart 5515 says he was not installed. And there does appear to be a way to remove it from its list of HP devices.

    I don't know what to do next. I used windows xp for years and I'm quite familiar with it, but I'm still learning on windows 7, so I don't know what would be my next step in this process of elimination of the printer "shadow" disappear for good.

    It turns out that the greyed out printer still had something left in its queue. It was not connected to any port, so I plugged in the port for the regular printer, and it printed a few things. And now, the greyed out printer disappeared, so I guess that the queue to be empty. Problem solved.

    Product Photosmart 5515-B111H (CQ183B) running on Windows 7 PC. Software seems to have loaded ok. When the install window appears the USB and other connections are indicated, USB has been selected but the connection does not appear on the next screen.  When I looked at devices and printers from the start screen, the 5515 appears as a scanner without the attributes of the printer.  It disappears when the 5515 is disconnected.  How can I connect the printer properly?

    Follow the steps below to perform pprinting Duplex of Office for Mac:

    1. On the file menu, select print. The print window is displayed.
      NOTE: The print window might be minimized. Click the blue triangle next to the product model (Mac OS X 10.6) or the view details button (10.7) see all available parameters. To select the connection type click the lowest selection box - Copies & Pages.
    2. Select from the drop-down.
    3. Set the duplex option as liaison Long Edge (Portrait) or binding Long Edge (landscape).

    You can save the settings for later use by clicking predefined settings > Save settings as a preset.

    Hello, I use a hp pavillion g6 and im trying to connect wirelessly to my printer Photosmart, 5515 but im having problems with the computer was implemented wirelessl room in my house for a while and me can print quite easily using my Iphone but I cannot set up wireless. He invites me to enter my IP address I do, but then he repeats just cannot connect I also tried to use hostname, but that does not work either please help the two devices are connected to the internet even and I checked they are running both on the same IP address

    Try to go in the tools on the printer and to restore the default settings of the network.  He's going to knock it out of the network briefly but then set it back up as if it were the first time.  You meet intellectual property conflicts, and it is a first step in troubleshooting.  It can change the IP address of the original one, as well, but that is not a bad thing.  Let me know how it goes.

    Please note: there are three stages of print head cleaning. Three steps if necessary. If the print head is badly clogged, it may require another round of cleaning. If so, wait 30 minutes after the last step of cleaning (third) to start the first stage of the cleanup process.

    If you are unable to print in black ink, I think that the issue may be the printer and not the cartridge. You can contact HP Technical Support at the following link:

    (1) once the page opens, please select the country in which you are located. Then enter your model of HP on the right number.

    (2) then choose "Contact the Support" tab at the top and scroll to the bottom of the page "HP Support - contact" to fill out the form with your details.

    (3) Once finished, click the "Show Options" at the bottom right.

    (4) Finally, scroll to the bottom of the page and select "Get a phone number." A file number and telephone number will now fill for you.

    This printer comes with the ePrint on that button. By clicking on ePrint and say yes to the activation of the web services and allowing automatic updates, the printer has finally returns the error message that it is impossible to connect to the server.

    Welcome to the Forums of HP's Support.  I see that you are unable to install web services on your printer Photosmart 5515.

    When you try to set the DNS servers to Google Public DNS servers, so you set a static IP address first?    If this isn't the case, please set an IP address manually before the configuration of DNS servers manually.

  • Scanning Photosmart 5515 software problem

    How can I scan a document to multiple pages in a SINGLE PDF rather than many separate pdf pages. It seems to be on option in the scan multi software and its irritation of having to scan each page and then attach multi pages to emails to transmit the content.

    I used to be able to do that on my last printer Cannon - this seems a bit poor software if I can't do it again.

    You are able to scan a multi-page PDF document:

    If you want to scan a document with several pages in a single file instead of several files, start the analysis with the software of the printer instead of select Scan from the control panel:

    1. Click the HP Photosmart 5515 from the desktop icon.
    2. Click on scan a photo or Document.
    3. Select the Document to shortcut file (the PDF icon).
    4. Click on scan.
    5. Use the Plus icon to add pages.

    If still separated scanned pages, follow steps 1-3, and then click Advanced settings.

    Make sure that the option to create separate pages is not checked.

    I have a HP Photosmart 5515, I was sold as being suitable for use with my ipad. But it also works for printing documents that it refuses to print images on photo paper. I'm an artist and this is the most important part of a printer for me. How do I put in place? Is there something I failed to do? Any help gratefully received.

    I have the same problem as many others: my printer has stopped printing black.  The colors are ok, and I tried to what is suggested in the paper, ink levels check and evacuate on the cartridge, by running the print head clean program. Nothing has changed, no black printing or copying.

    Yhe warranty has expired.  Is there something I can do?

    How to scan multiple pages into a single file on hp photosmart 6510? Each scanned page is put in a separate file now. How can this be corrected?

    Oh, guess what. I just figured out how to scan multiple pages in a pdf file of myself.  In short, the Scan of the computer software is good and works, but the Scan option on the touch screen of the printer is absolutely useless and crap unless you want to scan only one page!

    When you use the option to scan on the computer and start scanning, an option appears at the bottom of the computer screen with icons that say "Add or remove pages. If you first place the next page, then click on the "Add page" icon, it will scan the next page... You must click on this icon for each additional page. Then he doesn't save them to one pdf file! But I guess that means you must have your computer and printer next to each other to scan several pages... lol.

    FYI... I am a registered nurse. I have no computer training except to use the system we use to draw to the work, but I am pretty smart with computers together.  HP technicians should be able to understand and solve this problem before me! You do not?

    Anyway, please pass this information on HP technicians so that they know how to help the next person who called about this.  And the engineers of the printer upgrade option analysis on the screen of the printer itself. It sucks!
