Book RMAN

Hello

I was thinking about buying the book on RMAN (RMAN for Oracle Database 12 c Sam Alapati and Kuhn recipes)

A few questions about the book, I got was:

1. What is the book compared to RMAN of learning from scratch at the end?

2. If I buy the book of 12 c it will hinder perform me the procedures RMAN in my test database located in 11 g, that is, is there any major change in RMAN 11 g to 12 c? I could buy the book 11g but short on funds, as this book costs so more of the 12 book now.

Thank you

I couldn't say anything about the books, I have not seen, but I can say in general, revenues have two sides:

They can get things quickly.

They can break things fast.

The thing about the recipe is, you have to understand.  If you have the ability to extract knowledge from revenues is unknown.  They are good recipes is unknown, but still, you shouldn't run any script you do not fully understand, and is it running on a first test system.

RMAN in particular is full featured, with controls very powerful, and it can be difficult to translate back to a good SLA (service level agreement) scripts.

You don't want to be woken up at 02:00 with a critical system error and must begin to learn RMAN.  You should know it cold.  Practice, practice, practice all kinds of failure modes.

I'm not too proud to admit I don't have the time to review the RMAN OCP first I took it, because I had studied a book 8.0 and there was enough 8.1 new features on the test for me.  From 12 to 11 might be frustrating.  I wonder also how well controlled would be any book 12.

  • Configure controlfile autobackup

    Hello

    Anyone bed this backup of their control files using the following configure command?

    RMAN > configure controlfile autobackup peripheral type disc format '< path > '.

    I read that this will ensure that whenever a change is made to the database, the control file is saved.

    Like her, is there a structural change between backups, and we recover, the control file is then used (recorded in the backupset since the last backup) will not have this information in it.

    This sounds like a major witch hunt is there a failure and the need to recover. RMAN users implement this? I'm surrpised that he gets only half a page of reference in the book RMAN 11 g backup and recovery (Oracle Press).

    RHEL 5.5

    Hi Dan,.

    What you said culminated just my interest I never really tried before... so here goes.

    What I meant by the two parameters is the following (auto backup format and autobackup on):

    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;

    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE SBT_TAPE TO "%F" # by default

    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO "%F" # by default

    My autobackup controlfile is currently on and has my default device defined tape type:

    CONFIGURE THE TYPE OF DEFAULT DEVICE TO 'SBT_TAPE ';

    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;

    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE SBT_TAPE TO "%F" # by default

    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO "%F" # by default

    I created a tablespace, and after about 10 minutes the controlfile autobackup has been taken.  Tablespace was created at 14:15:53, and automatic backup was taken to 14.23.

    Note that even if the default device type was tape the controlfile was actually saved on the disk in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs

    CON START_TIME COMPLETION_TIME TIME_TAKEN_DISPLAY OUTPUT_BYTES_DISPLAY PARTS

    ---         ----------        -----------------               -----------------                     --------------------                   --------------------

    YES 1 APRIL 30, 2014 14:23 APRIL 30, 2014 14:23 00:00:00 7.23 M

    .

    Then I changed my settings as follows:

    CONFIGURE the DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK;

    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;

    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE SBT_TAPE TO "%F" # by default

    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO "%F" # by default

    I created a tablespace, and after about 5 minutes the controlfile autobackup has taken in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs.  Tablespace was created at 14:27:57 and the AutoSave was taken at 14.33.

    CON START_TIME COMPLETION_TIME TIME_TAKEN_DISPLAY OUTPUT_BYTES_DISPLAY PARTS

    ---      ----------          -----------------               -----------------                     --------------------                   --------------------

    YES 1 APRIL 30, 2014 14:33 APRIL 30, 2014 14:33 00:00:00 7.23 M

    Then, I explicitly set my location on disk:

    CONFIGURE the DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK;

    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;

    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE SBT_TAPE TO "%F" # by default

    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT for DEVICE TYPE DISK to 'u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbs/cf_%F';

    I created a tablespace, and after 7 minutes the controlfile autobackup has been taken.  Tablespace was created at 14:35:59 and the AutoSave was taken to 14.43.

    The backup controlfile was still taken on the disc.

    CON START_TIME COMPLETION_TIME TIME_TAKEN_DISPLAY OUTPUT_BYTES_DISPLAY PARTS

    ---      ----------          -----------------               -----------------                     --------------------                   --------------------

    YES 1 APRIL 30, 2014 14:43 APRIL 30, 2014 14:43 00:00:00 7.23 M

    So, in summary, if the database is in archivelog and controlfile autobackup is set on, then the controlfile is saved on disk, no matter if the default device type is tape or disk.  (I have not tried this if the database is not in archivelog mode, but I guess the Oracle documentation is correct).

  • Using tape for RMAN backup concerns

    Dear all,

    I use the library of networker for rman backup. I have some problem/question about what I don't use catalog db. Here it goes:

    1. think you that automatic backup controlfile should set to strip? or better to keep in the disc.

    2. How can I configure autoback controlfile format on TAPE?

    3. If I need to restore control to another HOST file, how can we do this?

    4. I've read a few books we can't CATALOG element of tape backup. If it's the fact that, after the disaster, how do I Catalog backup piece and restore this backup piece in another host?

    Kind regards

    Hello

    1 when RMAN channel tape is allocated when running RMAN backup, autobackup controlfile will be created in the Ribbon to place on the disc. If structural change to the database is made, for example by adding a new data file, then the controlfile autobackup will be created in the disk, regardless of the device type of the default RMAN configuration.

    Control file autobackup after structural changes of data and the Type of device SBT_TAPE (Doc ID 1190354.1)

    2. set below:

    RMAN > CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE 'SBT_TAPE' TO '%F ';

    3. If the automatic backup location is not the default location and then set the location first.

    Use this command to set the location:

    RMAN > SET FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE SBT_TAPE AUTOBACKUP CONTROLFILE to '< auto="" backup="" format="">';

    Then use the command

    RMAN > restore controlfile on "" automatic backup;

    4. starting with 10 g, it is possible to use the rman CATALOG command to add backuppieces stored in the disc to the rman repository. But it is not possible to use the order CATALOG for items stored on TAPE backup, but note below explains undocumented commands to add backuppieces stored in the RIBBON for the repository.

    HOW TO CATALOG the TAPE BACKUP ITEMS (Doc ID 550082.1)

  • Questions of newbie on RMAN

    Hi, I'm kinda a newbie to RMAN and I want to change on my existing backup strategy to use this. Before I had taken a cold backup to tape every night.

    Q. I now intend to use RMAN to backup online all night at the FRA and then once a day unloading FRA tape - is this a typical strategy of RMAN?

    Q. a backupset consists of 4 parts. Archives of newspapers, control file, archive during backup logs and files database, SPFILE. What is the first set of archive logs? for example, these necessary logs to recover since the last backup to the current point in time? I'm not sure if you take a backup then what you need to roll forward bare?

    Q. is the last piece of the backup of the archives set connects always contain a minimum of 1 that is backup RMAN itself actually causes a switch of implicit journal?

    Q. don't each backup includes the control file and the SPFILE (or find you only it is you have AutoSave enabled?)

    Q. If I want to be able to restore 2 days ago, it's better if use, a redundancy of 2 or in a detention policy window 2 day recovery? I think that if for some reason, I had more than 1 backup for a given day, I would not be guaranteed to be able to restore 2 days ago? (I know flashback Database is another alternative, but at the mpoment I focus on rethinking my RMAN ability)

    Q. If my control_file_record_keep_time is 7 days and I want to restore my database for say more than 7 days ago I have to preload a backup tape in my FRA of the 7 days ago or more and then do a cross check to the RMAN backup?

    I took 3 backups (2 sets of backup and copy of 1 image)

    Q. the list only list backup of backup sets? Do you need to use the copy of the list to see the image copy backup?

    Q. I find reading is not particularly nice backup list! It's not really structure / nest the output as defined backup and parts under this set (it just seems to show all effectively as part of backup set). Is there any alternative output say v $ backup_set which is more useful? In particular, I'm trying to watch a backup set intuitively and easily see which parts belong to him. Using the execution under the list of backup time is a method, but this can be confusing if you take a daily backup, and the backup takes place during the period of midnight! List backup doest seem to display time stamp, only the date stamp

    Q. when I do the copy of the Image, a directory of DATA file is created in my FRA and contains a copy of the data files. But where is a copy of the Archive of newspapers preserved? I see an ARCHIVELOG under FRA directory, but this is where the archive logs are preserved. A copy of the picture made it not actually a copy of these or is it just to use the same directory as LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_1?

    Many questions here!

    Thanks for any help

    Jim

    We need to send you a book to answer your questions!

    Q. I now intend to use RMAN to backup online all night at the FRA and then once a day unloading FRA tape - is this a typical strategy of RMAN?

    I can't say what is a 'typical' strategy unless I have seen implementations of RMAN at least 50 different stations however, some sites to make backups on live band, some sites do backups disk and then use the methods RMAN or non-RMAN to copy from disk to tape.

    Q. a backupset consists of 4 parts. The newspaper archives, file database files, SPFILE & control, archiving during the backup logs. What is the first set of archive logs? for example, these necessary logs to recover since the last backup to the current point in time? I'm not sure if you take a backup then what you need to roll forward bare?

    Not necessarily 4.  Could be more, could be less - depends what backup commands you run and data files, how many there are in the database.  The first 'series' is archivelogs * ONLY IF * you run a BACKUP of DATA PLUS ARCHIVELOG command.  Otherwise, if you run the BACKUP DATABASE and BACKUP ARCHIVELOG orders, you would separate sets of backup.  (Most sites run ARCHIVELOG BACKUP separately and more frequently than DATABASE BACKUP).    You need ArchiveLogs in all cases restore + restore other then the case where you are restoring a backup cold and don't not updating.

    Q. is the last piece of the backup of the archives set connects always contain a minimum of 1 that is backup RMAN itself actually causes a switch of implicit journal?

    It is based on the commands that you use.

    Q. don't each backup includes the control file and the SPFILE (or find you only it is you have AutoSave enabled?)

    Only if you CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON.  You should also be careful and where will these record - if you use an MRE and do not replace it with a clause FORMAT, they go to the FRA.  Otherwise, they go to the location of FORMAT.  Or go in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs

    Q. If I want to be able to restore 2 days ago, it's better if use, a redundancy of 2 or in a detention policy window 2 day recovery? I think that if for some reason, I had more than 1 backup for a given day, I would not be guaranteed to be able to restore 2 days ago?

    You must configure a recovery window.  Your suspicion is correct.  Two backups in one day meet 2 dismissal policy, thus making OBSOLETE backup from the night before.

    Q. If my control_file_record_keep_time is 7 days and I want to restore my database for say more than 7 days ago I have to preload a backup tape in my FRA of the 7 days ago or more and then do a cross check to the RMAN backup?

    Even with a control_file_record_keep_time of 7 days, the control file can contain information more than 7 days (for example, if you had 700 archivelogs in 7 days and expanded control file to contain 700 entries in the past, but now you have only 10 archivelogs per day, it may contain entries for 70 days of the archivelogs).

    You need to do a CATALOG (not OVERLAP) entered catalog for the files not present in the controlfile.

    A stratgey alternative is to use a catalog schema (database of repository) and do not rely on the single control file.

    Q. the list only list backup of backup sets? Do you need to use the copy of the list to see the image copy backup?

    Yes.

    Q. I find reading is not particularly nice backup list!

    You will have to live with it.  Individually, you can wish LIST BACKUP OF THE DATA file for each data file or LIST SUMMARY of BACKUP.

    A copy of the picture made it not actually a copy of these or is it just to use the same directory as LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_1?

    Copy of the image applies only to data files (there is also a CONTROLFILECOPY) not archivelogs.   ARCHIVELOG backups RMAN are BackupSets.

  • Archives to remove RMAN will save the files on a backup server?

    Environment:
    Oracle 11.2.0.3 EE on Solaris 10.5

    I do NOT currently use an RMAN Repository (coming soon).

    I have a primary database, sending logs to a wait.

    My retention policy is defined as 'WINDOW of RECOVERY OF 8 DAYS'.

    Question: RMAN will remove the log archiving of files on the standby server, after that they become obsolete based on the retention policy or I have to delete manually via command o/s?

    The fact that I do NOT use an RMAN Repository at the time where it makes a difference?

    Cannot find the answer in the documentation.

    Thank you very much!!

    -gary

    Hello again Gary;

    Sorry for the delay.

    Why did you suggested better?

    No, it's not better, but I'd rather manage the archives. This method works, period.

    This fact (running a backup every 4 hours) makes my irrelevant archivelog deletion policy?

    # Policy is important.

    Have the principal value:

    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO APPLIED ON STANDBY

    But the 'NONE' value on standby.

    The worst thing that can happen is THAT RMAN will bark when you try to delete something. (it's a good thing)

    How we prevent the backup process archive backup of a file to archive log before it is shipped to the waiting?

    Should be a non-issue, the archive does not move, it AGAIN is transported and applied. To SQL monitor time (Transport and apply)

    I agree with the recommendations made by P. Forstmann, although perhaps you could start by Tom Kyte book (you can read my review of this book on Amazon) and then come back on the Oracle Concepts Guide. Certainly, read and understand the book of Tom Kyte before moving on to something else. I also recommend the book "Oracle Performance Troubleshooting Guide" (in my opiinion that is much better organized and well balanced performance other books I have read... you can read my review on Amazon). Once you have a good understanding of the Oracle SQL, you can also take a look at the book 'Pro Oracle SQL'.

    For backup and restore, I found that (at least for the 10g version), book of Robert Freeman is very good in theory, but if something is not as described in the book, you can be left to search through Google search to determine the way forward. It also seems that some of the information needed for the exercises were difficult to locate in the rest of the book. The "Oracle Database 11g RMAN recipes" are set up quite a bit differently from the book of Robert Freeman. There are usually a couple of pages of theory at the beginning of each chapter, and then several practice exercises. If nothing else, the recipe format provides an overview of the works of RMAN and what to do when it does not work. I found a few errors in the RMAN Cookbook, but the material seems to be very well organized, which facilitates the progression in the book all in test / reproducing the different recipes. (I saw both of these books on Amazon too).

    Ravi said that we could look at the log RMAN. The output of the previous RMAN run would have shown that ArchiveLogs have been saved in the last run.

    In RMAN, you can also query by 'LIST BACKUP OF ARCHIVELOG ALL' to show that ArchiveLogs had been saved.

    In RMAN, you can also use the command ' ARCHIVELOG BACKUP all THE NOT BACKUP 1 TIME "backup ArchiveLogs that have not been saved up to - RMAN automatically determines the 'new' archivelogs.". "

    Dear user10260925,

    The documentation that you read is reliable but not enough.

    The Oracle can handle the archivelog directory and know that you are eligible for deletion. Stuff you posted here was derived from the books online and is supported and can be used when the Oracle knows and manages the archivelogs. This is simply called the flash recovery area. Please read the FRA at this very moment.

    Under the personal component normal circumstances in the industry use a few scripts to achieve on backup archivelog deletion.

  • DBA Oracle 10g book

    Hello

    I am new to Oracle, would say that if I note me on 10, I'd give may be 2 points because I know just the basics like tablespaces, file data, a little on the architecture... Although I've erased the 1 review of sql databases, but which is more related to sql.

    In the next 2 months I'm supposed a... disaster recovery as we use our backup tapes exisitng to restore the entire OS and Oracle DB with the application on UNIX... to prepare myself before for this exercise, I think I have to learn a lot about the foundations of the Oracle, how works RMAN, how can I restore the db through RMAN backup , apply the logs to archive blah blah.

    I downloaded a few pdf from tahiti.oracle.com and now I realize there is a large enough ocean and not practical to fill the same in the next 2 months & I can not afford to read the material on a full-time, due to problems of support in production... so to treat this I thought I'd go for a book , cannot so you guys recommend a good book for Oracle 10 g dba & RMAN.

    If I have to buy separately from RMAN book that is not a problem I can do.

    Let me know, if my approach to managing this problem seems logical.

    Concerning

    Learner

    Take the first small not, I suggest starting with the "2 day DBA" book from the library of documentation:
    http://download.Oracle.com/docs/CD/B19306_01/server.102/b14196.PDF

    If you want to have a good understanding of the Oracle, I recommend before jumping in RMAN, take a look at Tom Kyte's latest book. I recently went through the book, and you will find the original version of this study here:

    If you're doing a cold backup by RMAN (which is done with the database in MOUNT State), the advantage is that RMAN updates its repository / controlfile with information about the backup that was made.
    As a result, RMAN can be used to identify and restore the backup.

    (Of course, if the backup is a BACKUPSET, then you must RMAN to restore the backup, while a backup as COPY DATA file can also be restored using OS commands).

  • Details about using RMAN

    Salvation by referring to http://www.dba-oracle.com/real_application_clusters_rac_grid/recovery_catalog.html

    I have two DBs a CATDB (on oracle 9i) and another PRODdb (about 10g)
    now, I created the CATDB recovery catalog.

    My doubt is when you check the database. What machine I run rman (machine with 10 g or 9i or I can call him to RMAn of one of them).

    RMAN TARGET sys/oracle@PRODdb CATALOG rman/cat@catdb

    in the above stage I doubt. RMAN, which use? 9i or 10g or it does not matter.

    Thank you

    Do not you...

    You must run this command from the target server that you backup

  • Implications of losing the directory ArchivedLogs and RMAN backup.

    DB version: 10 gr 2
    We have a database of test that is important, since this is a pre-production DB used by the application for the final test team.

    Currently this DB is not in Archivelog mode. Every night a cron job runs to create the dump of datapump expdp of patterns in this PB.

    We want to test the RMAN backups online in this PB. So, let's put this db in ARCHIVELOG mode for a week.

    The RMAN backup items will be stored in c++ / u03/data1/orabkp + and archived logs will be stored in c++ / u04 / directory ach_logs +.

    We want to know the impact of/u04/ach_logs, the directory of archived newspapers getting accidentally deleted. I know that the accidental removal of the RMAN backup directory should not affect the normal operation of the database. But we want to know if the accidental deletion of archive redo logs directory will affect the DB.

    NO, it will not affect the database. If you delete the files of the database archive logs will work normally. But you restore your database to the point in time. For recovery, you need your full backup of all data files + archivelogs online redo log files.

    For a policy of backup of a production database where you won't lose any transaction that you must book your archive saves files of rman backup.

  • RMAN and repositories on the same database grid control

    What are the disadvantages of having the RMAN Repository and repository on the same database grid control?

    What effect does this have

    1. daily maintenance

    2. after disaster or high availability... or the recovery scenarios.

    3 is server performance with respect to the use of the CPU and memory - not desirable to have two repositories on the same database?

    Currently we have not a RMAN or a repository of GC. We intend to implement both. Angle of savings, it would be good if we can just build another data base for two repositories on an existing database server with 2 production databases. The server has enough CPU and RAM face for 1 new database, but that would mean an exaggeration to have 2 new databases.

    If it is not advisable to have two repositories on the same database, then we would need strictly two separate databases, in this case, we will need to go to a new database server host two databases, which the org seeks to avoid, as this would mean that to buy a new license.

    I tried searching a few books, but don't have no clear guidance on the same. Any opionion would really help. Thank you.

    Where this instance fails, all rman needs to restore is in the database control file. How to restore a database with rman from the command line, without a catalog. (The backup and Recovery Guide has details of how do.) This will get data back so that you can use the grid again control.

    In order to insure against a default of the machine hosting the instance, verify that the database is in log mode archive and protected with scheduled backups of hot and copy the backup files to another server.

    Other options for high availability, you have a license (Data Guard, RAC) could also be deployed for this instance, if you need more recovery options.
