    Hello world!

I had this Portege M400 for nearly 2.5 years and never met with such a problem.

When I press the power button / stop * HDD led light turns on, then WiFi and then suddenly the HARD drive off * and the rest in this way: (.) Eventually, the Toshiba logo appears at the same time. I thought that problem disc HARD just to know that after 90 degrees my laptop WHAT HDD led start flashing again. Eventually, Windows loads at startup animation it would 'safe' return to normal position and expected to start Windows.

so, I suppose the problem is somehow related to the accelerometer, is it? I don't get these gels after Windows starts. Currently I have version 3.8 BIOS and installed Windows 7 Pro...

It's really starting to annoy me - people look at me funny, as I switch my cell phone 90 degrees :-)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello

Maybe it has something to do with laptops HDD?
Maybe the head of HARD drive cannot be moved correctly and the vertical position allows to get the drive moving head again
Unfortunately, I've never seen such strange behavior for laptop and so I can give you a few personal suggestions.
In my view, that the HARD drive should be checked at the first maybe the problem could be solved in replacement of HARD drive

  • Portege M300: Format SD card - 1 GB instead of 2 GB problem

    Hello

I used the "SD memory card Format" preinstalled on my Portege M300 laptop utility to format a 2 GB SD card (in accordance with the recommendation of Toshiba). The operation was succsesful, but the card cannot be read (he seems to have a RAW file system). In addition, try to put a FAT or FAT32 partition using the windows format utility results in partition of 1 GB instead of 2 GB!

The card had a 2 GB FAT partition and has worked flawlessly before using the Toshiba utility. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Can I do to restore the original capacity is the card?

    Thank you

    Hello

Are you sure it's a SD and MMC card as one not another, for example at 100%?
The Toshiba utility supports only SD cards!
How format you the SD card?
As far as I know, there are two different format options:
Quick format - only deletes the directory structure
Full size SD card, everything will be deleted
This utility formats SD to the SD format memory card.

The other possibility is that you have used the Toshiba SD memory Boot utility
It is a utility that can create a map of SD memory on a startup disk. As far as I know that use the RAW file system.

  • Portege M300 - Ubuntu, bootmgr error

    Hi guys,.

I hope you can help, I spent 2 days reading similar posts, but nothing seems to work.

I installed Ubuntu on an external hard drive (using my Vista machine). Can I boot Ubuntu from my Vista machine without any problem.

However, I now want to use this hard drive Ubuntu in my new NetBook (for me). (Toshiba, Portege, M300). However when I install my Ubuntu HD in this machine I get the infamous error "bootmgr is missing". I REALLY hate this error now.

So I did my research and give EACH of them thinking that I should use my Vista recovery DVDs for this problem. Why the hell do I need to use a Vista CD when it comes to pure Ubuntu installation?

Can someone give me some ideas? Computers laptop Toshiba require Bootmgr (i.e. an installation of windows?)

    Please PLEASE help,
    Marc

    PS thanks in advance...

You don't need a special boot manager, Linux should start very well after a successful installation.

Did you delete all partitions on the HARD disk before you install Linux?

It seems that the Windows boot sector is still installed.

  • Portege M300 - question: How can I format the HARD drive?

    Hello

I saw Toshiba Portege M300 and try to format my laptop. When I try to use the CD to boot (DVD release) at the start, but I have the "CD/DVD" option, it s not poster not options 'formatting of disks', instead it goes to the login window. I have windows XP OS in my laptop.

I don't know why this problem is coming. Please let me know the possibility of fixing this issue, or the option in the form of my laptop without recovery DVD.

Thanks in advance for your time and reply.

    Thank you
    Saran

    Hello

Maybe the internal CD/DVD drive cannot handle the recovery disc
There are several reasons for this issue could be a dirty laser or lens something wrong with the disc of recovery or other reason

You are able to start using other bootable discs like original CD bootable CD in MS Windows or linux?

You could this workaround is short:
Copy the recovery CD (burn on another CD) and then try to start the laptop using the recovery disc copied.

    Maybe it will work

  • Portege M300 fails to recognize HARD drive

Last week, I replaced the hard drive on my laptop Toshiba Portege M300 to a larger drive. It worked very well for a coupe of days, but when I tried to plug in the hard drive of origin back in (to copy data on a network share, which I forgot to transfer to the new hard drive) he does not see the drive. I tried to set the new drive and he can't see it either.

I tested the original and new hard drive on a different laptop and they work so I can't guess the willing Portege of a faulty ide controller or the ide cable. No matter which hard drive, I am attaching the trys to laptop to boot from the CD-ROM, ignores the hard drive and the NIC PXE trys. The bios indicates also theres no hard disk attached too.

First of all, if the CD-ROM drive still work am I right in thinking the ide controller is still work?

Secondly could someone suggest where I can buy an ide for a M300 cable because it is a ribbion printed circuit board which I have never seen elsewhere. I guess this is part of Toshiba custom?

    Hello

I believe also that it is Toshiba custom component and it will be much better in the service partner contact in your country. AFAIK this Portege is very nice and expensive unit and you should not do it alone. If you have a hardware problem allow technicians to do it for you. Small mistake and you can just have big problem.

Are you sure that you did not damage something?

  • Portege M300: Creating dualboot (two time Windows XP Pro)

    Hello

just curious, if you have experience with the creation of dual-boot Windows XP on M300. (The reason is that I need second OS to start immediately if one goes down, what happened to me).

I failed to create stable systems. There is no problem to install separately on 2 partitions (I am aware that the BIOS has limit of 128 GB limit, so that they are 12 and 221 GB large, on the 250 GB drive). But after a couple of reboots, second partition starts to hang on the blue screen, or said "Missing Hal.dll" and so on.

I reinstalled like 15 times, tried different configurations, modified boot.ini, code mbr, windows, partitions NTFS or FAT32, managers start Recovery console, recover from Toshiba CD, installed since I386 with the windows key, but the problem is that second installation of windows finally just 2 months maximum. And then - «lack \system32\DRIVERS\psi.sys, missing \system32\DRIVERS\system missing \system\DRIVERS\hal.dll...» »

    Any suggestion is welcome.

    Hello

AFAIK the Portege M300 supports IDE ATA 6 HDD interface.
Since this interface supports 48-bit LBA, you should be able to serve a larger sizes of 250 GB HARD drive.

In any case, have you tried to create a small partition and reinstall the OS?
    Select this check box.

Also I discovered that this laptop supports an internal memory.
Looks like there are 256 MB internal memory...

However, I searched and bit for similar problems and the error messages like:
missing hal.dll missing \system32\DRIVERS\system or missing \system32\DRIVERS\psi.sys is mainly related to a hardware problem. might be a faulty HARD drive or defective memory causes questions too.

I think of areas of defective HARD drive or something like that...

    Hello

If I remember well, you can install WXP again using two different methods:
-Restoration of created media recovery do you have created following the advice in the manuals?
-Restoration of the drive HARD recovery on page 69 you can find detailed instructions how to proceed.

  • Portege M300: Is the protection of HARD drive only for the brand of Toshiba drives?

    Hello

I am trying to upgrade my Portege M300 with a hard drive bigger, as seen on the Portege forum, I posted the thread after that two hard drives from samsung does not similarly, shortly after the installation of the new.

I just want to know if the protection of Toshiba HARD drive utility is simply made for Toshiba hdd or if it can work on any other brands of hard drives of brand. As I say, I want to upgrade a 60 GB to 160 GB and 2 new hard drive failed. I've since updated my bios to the latest version and I also consider not to install this hard drive protection feature, just in case where it will cause problems once more with my 3rd HDD replacement of same nature.

I appreciate any thoughts on this.
    Thank you very much
    C

    Hello

Usually it s any manufacturer is.
If the HARD disk supports the CHIP so it should be possible to use this HARD drive.
The HARD disk protection tool verifies the parameters of the HARD disk.
But the settings are configured by HDD manufacture then it might be possible that the HARD disk will not work if the tool would not choose the settings correctly.

  • Portege M300-101 - every 30 min I get a BSOD

I have a Portege M300-101 (Windows XP) and every 30 minutes I comes up with a blue screen with a text about 1 sec so I can't read it, then restarts and happen in 30 minutes

    Hello!

It's not easy to say what are the causes of the problem, but as said Akuma, test the RAM with Memtest86.
Download the image, burn it to a disc and start from it.

Automatic restart, you can also disable in Windows.
My computer-properties-Advanced online online => startup and recovery settings => remove the mark to restart automatically.

Sometimes, this problem is caused by the HARD drive. You can test with the Test Drive for physical fitness.

  • Portege M300-101: can I run Vista on it?

I would like to know if there will be difficulties to pass the Portege M300-101 to Vista? Cordially e. - Oslo

    Hello

Portege M300 is fairly new unit and I believe, that there should be any problem. Please note that Toshiba doesn't support Vista at this time and if you need some drivers you must search for them alone.

It is the same with the tools and utilities. They are designed for Windows XP Home edition and I really put t know if they work under Vista.

I will also test Vista on my Satellite Pro M70 soon and see how it works.

    Bye and good luck!

  • Impossible to install Common-modules on Portege M300

    Hello everyone,

I'm Italian and I had some problems with a Portege M300. After the crash of Windows XP, I did a fresh install of XP but, of course, I lost all drivers. I tried to install, but I can't do that because it doesn't have the Toshiba common modules installed.

I downloaded it, but when I try to click on the setup icon nothing happens, and when I try to install other drivers same message appear (of the missing of the common modules).
How can I solve this problem?

    Thank you very much

If you crash the system why you back up all important data and install the OS by using delivered Toshiba recovery CD facilities?
After doing this you will own preinstalled OS and everything works well again.

I know it's a solution more radical but maybe one that suits.

  • Portege M300 - unable to Hibernate or standby - by.

    Hello

I have a very strange problem with my 2.5 year old Portege M300. For some time, I can not hibernate or put it in stand-by mode. Everything goes as it should, "going to stand by" in windows appears and matrices of computers, hdd led blinks every 10 seconds and nothing happens even if wait for hours.

It's the same with hibernation. He also sometimes happends this computer dies in a similar way during regular employment.
It almost looks like the hard drive no longer works. I did a few tests of basic hdd and it seems that everything is ok.

You have any ideas what could be the reason?

    Hello

When did you reinstall the OS?

Eventually he s question as a BONE I mean it possible s that your OS is confused upward and therefore some functions don't work properly

On the other hand a hardware problem (HARD drive, memory) would be also possible.
But first if would be interesting to know if the laptop would serve after recovering.

  • Portege M300 - update Bios without battery

    Hello

Currently, I am trying to fix a problem that I have with my laptop (Portege M300) of the battery.
I have been informed that the bios update should solve this problem, but when I try to update I get error "the AC adapter is not connected, or battery power is not sufficient.

Now, the power adapter is connected and works well, but the battery is on 4% of costs...
This is the exact reason, I'm updating the bios!

Does anyone know how I'm supposed to solve this problem?

    Thanks in advance,
    Chris H

    Hello

I m not very good if the update of the BIOS might help you what it s a battery problem
Have you noticed this problem on the first day of purchase?
I mean if this issue was not present the same using BIOS in the past, then it wouldn't be a matter of BIOS but material, possibly a battery

I think that the battery needs to be checked.

  • Portege M300 - replacement of HARD drive failed

    Dear all,

I have a Portege M300 I bought around 3 or 4 years and I am very happy with and without any problems. The laptop came originally with a 60GB and I wanted to upgrade to one with greater capacity, a 160 GB! My laptop is about 1.2 GB of Ram and runs on windows XP SP3.

I recently bought a Samsung HD-160 (160GB) which should be compatible with my laptop. After installing from scratch and used for about 2 weeks, the computer suddenly stopped. HARD drive stopped spinning and a #0 ERROR came when I tried to restart. There was NO WAY to drive HARD turn again so I contacted Samsung and they replace. The HARD drive has a slight smell of burnt component but very light.
I replaced the HDD failed with a 2nd replacement and to my disbelief, the SAME THING happened again just after 3 hours of use! I contacted Samsung and once more they will send replace me, with the same type of hard disk. I tried to get explanations of Toshiba and Samsung for why this happens, but so far I have no explanation.
Without hesitation, I gave my original 60 GB Toshiba drive who was thankfully still my documents and the laptop is happy again touch wood.

What I am doing wrong? can someone help me please go to the bottom of this so I do not experience the same problem with my 3rd replacement? I wish I had a bigger hard drive on my laptop and I think all of them must be compatible. I buy one that should be compatible with my Portege M300. Both are valued at 5 v

I have to add to what has just occurred to me now that I have installed all the Toshiba original programs too on my Samsung HDD out of Windows XP, including the utility that protects the disk in case of Vibrations. This could be the problem by any chance? This utility only for Toshiba's brand HARD drive? Any ideas or other suggestions on this issue please?

Thank you very much for your attention.

    Carmine

Portege M300 is pretty old laptop and maybe you should be careful with these upgrades.
According to specification for laptop, your laptop can handle with 100 GB hard drives, but I'm sure you can use 120 GB as well.

Then maybe you should try to upgrade the disk with 120 GB of HARD drive to see if everything will be OK. I think also 120 GB is enough and you have enough free space for the data backup.
What do you think about this?
