BUG: Stop asking me what program I want to use it to open images in Windows 10

Yes, there is another thread on this, but it has an accepted answer that does not solve the problem.

In Windows 10 whenever you click on an image in Skype, you get an annoying screen asking what program you want to open it with. I have put my flaws so stop show and simply open the image.

No, this isn't my file associations are not set up. I got them, I can double click on the images in the file Explorer and they just open, other programs can do that too.

I even wrote a simple c# program

Process.Start(@"IMG_03112015_100918.png");

who has managed to open the image upwards with my associations - prove that Yes, you can do it programmatically.

Windows changed how some API worked? Obviously. But you can bypass. It's something that should be fixed before Win10 went live. The fact that months later it is still a problem reflects really badly on Skype.

Yes you did! Skype 7.14 works as it was intended!

I recently installed a new antivirus protection software, now at any time, I try to run a program he's asking me what program I want to use to run it, even for already installed programs. For IE, firefox, etc, it's simple, but when I try to adjust the volume of the system through Control Panel he asks me what program I want to use it to run only and I can not. Any ideas how to solve this problem?

Look at the article on execution of .exe files.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/950505

You can make the default program using set Associations.
    1. open default programs by clicking the Start button, click default programs.
    2. click on associate a type of file or Protocol with a program.
    3. click on the file type or protocol that you want the program to act as the default value. (In this case it will be for .exe files).
    4. click on the change agenda.
    5. click on the program that you want to use by default for the selected file type, or click the arrow next to other programs to show other programs.
    6. (if you don't see other programs or your program is not listed, click Browse to find the program you want to use, and then click Open. If no other programs are installed that are able to open the type of file or Protocol, your choice will be limited.)
    7. click on OK.

  • Almost every program I try to run asks me what program I want to open it with. Internet Explorer files using a calculator.

So yes, as the title says, I can't any program to be run, I can't even look at my system to try to update the driver. I tried to download some programs to solve this problem of diver updates to the registry scan fix everything on the windows site and I'll try to run the program, but still he asks me what I want to open the program with. Internet Explorer is just about the only program I can get it to work. I can't even program my system restore to run, that asking too me to choose a program I want to open the file with. I don't know what to do. I was able to run my Norton Virus scans, analyses of registry, anything and everything that Norton 360 can do, I did it and nothing works. So please if you have any solution send them my way!

So yes, I could find a site that fixed my problems that it was. http://www.dougknox.com/XP/file_assoc.htm

so if someone else is having the same problems I was, go to this link and find the fix .exe and BOOM you guessed it.

  • When I try to open a program, a box appears asking what program I want to use to open the file. Even when I try to open Internet Explorer.Any idea that would entail, and how to fix it?

If I click with the right button on a program, and then click Run as and uncheck the protect my computer box that open programs very well.

Looks like you may have a virus or other malware. Get your updated antivirus program and boot into Safe Mode. Note that some viruses can hide from your normal antivirus program, so you really need to scan in Safe Mode. To enter in Safe Mode when you turn on first, press F8 on every seconds until you get the menu, and then select Safe Mode. Then run a complete system scan.

If that suits him fine. If this is not the case, use system restore to go back to an earlier date at the beginning of the problem. To run system restore, click Start-> programs-> Accessories-> System Tools-> system restore. Click on the box that says show more restore points.

You can check the corrupted system files. Open an administrator command prompt and run SFC if the above does not help. Click START, and then type sfc in the search box, right-click to SFC. EXE and click run as administrator. Then, from the command prompt type sfc/scannow.

Finally if all else fails, you can look at the rather cryptic system event log. To make, click Start-> Control Panel-> administration-> event viewer tools. Once in Event Viewer system log-click and scroll entries looking for these "error" with indicator see if you can find guidance on where the problem may be.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

  • Shortcuts to programs, EXE files does not open (you will be asked which program I want to use to open the file)

My system has developed a strange (and annoying) issue that no longer allows me to double click on the shortcuts of programs or EXE files.  When I do, I give myself a menu asks me what program I want to use to open the file, as if I was trying to open a file with an extension that is not associated with.

The only way to get all the programs to run more is to right click on the shortcut and select "Run as Administrator".

Right click on the shortcut also reveals a new 'momentum' (Yes, spelled with one S tiny) option in the menu.  I have not tried it works, in my view, it could be related to some false recently-removed security software that appeared out of nowhere last night.

Any help to remedy this situation and get back to normal functionality would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

If program shortcuts are not no longer works, you will need to use a procedure special difficulty fo files .lnk (similar to the one used above with .exe files).

Go to http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/06/22/reset-and-fix-broken-windows-vista-file-ext-and-type-associations-include-exe-com-sys-zip-lnk-folder-drive/ and select the .lnk and run it.  That should fix your shortcuts.  Or you can use the link provided above by Michael Murphy - it does essentially the same thing.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

  • When I go to open a file a box comes up to choose what program I want to open with.

When I go to open a file a box comes up to choose what program I want to open with.  At the bottom of this box is a place where I'm supposed to be able to check who always says "use this program to open this file" I can't check this box.  I open office.org and it allows to automatically save in this format.  Microsoft word program has been installed on my computer and he began to do what I said above then my daughter-in-law.  I've since removed the Microsoft Word program, but it continues to make me choose program to open whenever I try to open a document that was created after she comes to settle the Microsoft word porgram.  Now, even if I had clicked on save in openoffice.org, with that I always get this box asking me what program I want to open.  Thank you for your help.  Marilyn.

I guess the box to "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is grayed out, and that's why you can not check it out.  Is this correct?  Is this true for the two files that were created in OpenOffice files AND that were created in Microsoft Word (note that created is the same that that edited not)?

In OpenOffice, make sure that the "automatic file name extension" option is enabled in the file "Save as" dialog box.

    • Click on "My Documents" (or open Windows Explorer and go everywhere where your documents).
    • Click Tools > Folder Options and then click the view tab
    • Scroll down to the bottom of the "Advanced settings" area and make sure that "Hide extensions of known file types" is NOT checked.
    • Click OK

Find one or more files that is causing problems.  Which file extensions are displayed (3 characters after the dot in the filename) on these files?

  • When opening a program, such as system restore, it asks what program you want to open this program with ie adobe, yahoo, internet Explorer

When you open a program, such as the system restore or turbo tax it always ask what program you want to open this program with a list of options such as the Adobe reader, internet explorer, yahoo Messenger, etc..

is there any solution for this?
