  The reason why I asked and have these specific examples of the error was:

  There was an older version of Norton (and now unsupported by Norton) who, after receiving an update, when the system has restarted, and Norton, loaded, it corrupted the system of files a bit (NTFS) so next time you have restarted, you will get this error.

  Run chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console XP fix it until the next reboot when new Norton loaded and it could corrupt the NTFS still once, then you would only get one go and should run chkdsk /r every reboot.  Allegedly, the system has worked fine - until the next reboot.

  You wouldn't be able to apply the KB307545 without being able to start or something.  If MS Answers forums would prompt some system information when a new question is asked (as you have a genuine XP bootable installation CD), maybe one day we would not have this kind of answers that won't be of great use if you cannot start.

  Hello.

  I'm a complete newbie to all this so please keep it simple for me :)

  My laptop Dell Inspiron 6000 (purchased in 2006) has the blue screen of death.  He's going through the process initial priming and then at the start of the Win XP black screen with the blocks moving on the screen to complete darkness for about 10 seconds then blue screen.

  The initial error was as above with the title, as it reported:

  The registry cannot load the hive file:

  \systemroot\system32\config\default

  or its log or alternation.  It is damaged, missing, or not accessible in writing.

  Laptop and then thrown out of physical memory and remained in that State until I put in now the power button power off / stop.

  What I've done so far:

  1 tried to start in safe mode - will not start to last known good config etc or in any safe mode - it lists various programs and then stops at themup.sys file then possibly a blue screen.

  2. run the tree of symptom diagnosis for "can not boot the OS " - failed the following tests:

  DRIVE IDE S/N [serial ]

  read (error code 0F00:0244 ),

  check (data error impossible to fix error code 0F00:1 A 44 msg block 346292 or media is write protected )

  Passed the following tests: device self test, search, SMART, launch control (slowed down) unit, stop the command unit (standby mode).

  3. with a Dell technician on the phone, we did the hard drive (DST short status test) diagnostic tests and the message returned was:

  Unit 0: Status of the IDE failed status byte = 64 control code = 1 Msg no = no additional sense information.

  The Dell technician has determined that the hard drive was not so I need a new.  Is this true? Could there be any other cause?

  4. run a Test Express via diagnosis - on confidence Test it reportedcode 0F00:1344 with Error Msg: block incorrigible data error 344575 or media is media is protected .  Reinforced the message with several blocks - basically all one of 367933 to 346292.

  Other information that might be relevant

  1. A few weeks ago I remember an error message (think blue screen came then as well, but not as shown above), then it auto ran chkdsk, said something to be dirty, completed and started normally.
  2. Some time ago (6 months), I did a "full backup of the system" through windows in which I myself remember a section of the disk has been partitioned "in case of emergency.  Plug my Maxtor hard drive on my desktop, I can see the backup and explore folders - one is called windows and there a subfolder called to repair ; Another is called 'State system' with folders calledboot files , COM + registration database class , register .  Is there a file called 'default' in there that I could replace the defective one with?
  3. Windows XP is professional, version 2002 with Service Pack 3.  I don't have disks, OEM installed.

  What I would do:

  Of course, to fix the computer, but as always, to retrieve the data I have on it (a lot!) as well as the programs/applications I have on it.  A friend said use what we call "hirems mini xp"-apparently it starts from a cd and looks like a windows safe mode, then copy all data on my external Maxtor drive?  Can I get to a point where I could restart windows normally and do a full save / copy data/applications?

  Can I get another hard drive (assuming that the Dell technician is correct in that it doesn't have / does not) and transfer all the files from the old hard drive on my Maxtor external drive, then on the new hard drive (I read somewhere in these forums, you can get a kind of "box" usb Link the old hd once out , the new hd once in the laptop - it is a better option? Where can I get this kit?

  A friend (an very teccie one!) had a look and found that the head had crashed into the disc.  He had not received a blow as it was probably caused by my turn off the card in the stop - I would have thought the transfer of energy from the battery car would not have had impact, but we live and learn lol - won't do it again.  Ordered new hard drive...

  Do you currently or have you ever had products Norton/Symantec installed and if so, which version?

  Sometimes, some old versions will corrupt the file system when they start.  You can go again after running chkdsk/r, but only once more, then when Norton starts again at the next reboot, the file system is corrupted again and you will see the same problem (you do not start again).  To fix this, you must obtain a new version of Norton.  So when you see this error, I would ask this question too.

  KB307654 and KB307545 both assume that you have a genuine bootable CD to install XP, which most people don't.

  However, it is easy to make a bootable CD of XP (no XP media required) Recovery Console and run your chkdsk from there.

  Ok... I have a Dell Vostro 1510... all of a sudden, I can't on this laptop!  I have Windows XP Professional.  It lights up when I choose to start windows... I am said to be:

  Then, when it starts to run it says: CHKDSK checks the files (step 1 of 3)... it happens to 47% finished and that's all!  It won't do anything else, it just stops!

  I see you mentioned do not have all the disks with the laptop and maybe it's that he came not with any, because the installation files are likely in a hidden partition.

  1. Start your computer from the Windows XP CD drive. If prompted, select the options that you must select to start from the CD drive.

     Note To start your computer from the Windows XP CD drive, your CD drive or a DVD drive must be configured to do this. For more information about how to configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive or a DVD drive, refer to the documentation provided with your computer or contact the computer manufacturer.

  2. When you are prompted to select repair or recover, press R. This starts the Microsoft Recovery Console.

     Note You may need to enter the number to indicate the installation of Windows XP on the hard drive.

  3. When you are prompted, type the administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.

  I am running Windows XP with SP3.  I studied the KB articles and while I found articles that address this particular failure, I can't find all the articles that are designed expressly to what to do with Windows XP SP3 installed.  I can't restore because this feature has been disabled until the registry file has become corrupted according to the message that I get when I try to do a restore to an earlier time.  I tried to install the Recovery Console, but get an error message because my SP3 is newer than my original disk and once again, none of the KB articles help or dier SP3.  According to me, I have reached an impasse on mine and need external assistance.  I thought about just the upgrade to Windows 7 and finish with Windows XP, but the only problem I see with that is that Windows 7 would be an upgrade, still wouldn't need my files of Windows XP to upgrade to Windows 7?

  Once again, if you need run the Recovery Console, you don't have to install it. Start with your XP CD. Instructions of Jose to create your own Recovery Console CD are good, but in your case, they aren't necessary.

  Integrtating SP3 in an older XP installation CD and creating your own CD is a pretty good idea, but not absolutely necessary. In addition, it is sometimes difficult with some OEM XP CD like Dells. I did, but I had to go into the i386 folder and delete directory and file SVCPACK DL SVCPACK SVCPACK. INF file. But I think you can use a program like nLite to make integration (aka "slipstreaming") easier. The good thing is that you will have a CD to install XP SP3 level, useful if you need to perform a cleaning or repair install. Yes, you can use it to install the Recovery Console, too. But it is not really necessary. I think it is best to start from the CD and run it from there. And the good news is that you can use ANY CD of XP SP LEVEL to do this. :-)

  You have a Windows XP CD?  You need start the recovery console to resolve this problem, or you will need to mount the drive in another computer.  If you do not have a Windows XP cd, you can download an .iso file on the net Recovery Console a burn to a cd.

  Start the recovery console, run chkdsk /r on the drive and see if that fixes things.  If the computer still shows the same error after running chkdsk then see here:

  (a) failure.

  corruption of file b) & defective hardware.

  (c) the problem can occur on shutdown.
