Can I access physical disks inside VMware Workstation?

Hey there,

I'm curious to know if it is possible to access the physical hard drives within a real operating system.  Lets say I am running Windows XP inside VMware workstation and I have an additional physical hard drive installed in my computer (we'll call it E drive in the operating system of the host that is Windows Vista).

I want to access drive E in the virtual Windows XP for storage space.  Is it possible to do?

Now suppose another scenerio,

I have drive G in my host OS and it contains all sorts of delicious data I want to see the inside of my virtual Windows XP and maybe even add some other delicious from within the virutal OS files.  Is this also possible?

Thanks in advance, I did a lot of research and could not find anything regarding these issues.

The answer is Yes.  Under the parameters of the virtual machine, you can add, and then select the physical disk, and choose the drive to mount.  It's good if you have a physical drive side that does not use the computer itself.

Now if you want to just copy or move files 1-2 here and there in your physical machine to the virtual, you can still drag and drop between two desktop computers.  Another great way to transfer files is to do it via network shares.  I wouldn't ride the host o/s of hard disk to the virtual machine to a few files and then just pull...

  • Can I access a label inside a MC and then return to the main time line

    Here is my current set up.

    I have a section marked on the main timeline that has the icons of 12 different videos. Each icon acts as a button and brings a user to a section marked with a FLV Playback component work video to play the corresponding video. These marked sections are located on the main of the time.

    This methog is my very long time mainline. Is there a way to do an additional MC which will hold all the buttons of the video and then have this MC separated in marked sections.

    In other words can I access a label inside a MC and then return to the main time line?

    My current code to access the label placed on the main timeline is:

    HowTo_maininfo_mc.theArrangement_btn.addEventListener (MouseEvent.CLICK, theArrangement_btn_amimated_btnDown);

    function theArrangement_btn_amimated_btnDown(event:MouseEvent):void {}

    gotoAndPlay ("theArrangement");

    }

    What it would be like if my "theArrangement" label would be located inside a MC?

    Is there a specific code of if I want to have a close button located on the label inside a MC and he needs to get on a label located on the main timeline?

    You should have an image with an flvplayback component and having each button assign the variable value from a source that is used by your component:

    var sourceVar:String;

    function theArrangement_btn_amimated_btnDown(event:MouseEvent):void {}

    sourceVar = "arrangement.flv";  for example

    gotoAndPlay ("flv_pb");

    }

    ///

    and as part of the "flv_pb", use:

    yourflv_pb.source = sourceVar;  where yourflv_pb is your component instance name.

  • How can I change default location VM VMware Workstation via Group Policy or to a Script?

    Hello

    I administer a laboratory of my school networking in a Windows Server 2008 R2 environment. We want to enable folder redirection but since VMware Workstation creates new virtual machines by default in the C:\Users\Username\Documents\Virtual Machines, I can't do this, or else the NAS would be overloaded.

    My question is, is there a file registry or config that I could change via a script or a political group? In this way, all students would default their VM install to another location.

    Thanks for your time.

    The default location is %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Virtual Machines and is not set in the registry of Windows or the disk file until the default is changed and is then defined in the file %APPDATA%\VMware\preferences.ini as: prefvmx.defaultVMPath = "FQP.

    We appreciate your comments,

    You should have a vmx file located in the same directory as your other VM like a VMDK files.

    Just open the .vmx file with any Notepad application and make the change.  The vmx file is a configuration file for the client.

  • Problems with NAT? Can't access internet from inside the network?

    I was intrigued with this problem for a few days now. I'm stuck on what could be the issue. The problem is that I can ping my router, G0/0 and G0/1, to the internet. Cisco IOS NAT support ACLs with a keyword "log"?

    A. When you configure Cisco IOS NAT translation dynamic NAT, an ACL is used to identify the packages that can be translated. The current NAT architecture does not support the ACL with a keyword "log".

  • Increase the size of the disk in VMWare Workstation - VM Workstation 6.5.1

    The host is a QuadCore computer with 32-bit XP Prof. SP2

    The guest is a Windows 2008 x 64 Enterprise Edition.

    I use VM preinstalled 6.5.1 build - 126130.  I originally created a virtual hard drive of 30 GB to start with and after loading all my software finished consuming 29 GB.  I deleted all snapshots and shrunk the VHD.  Defragemented - I could not recover any space by following the steps above.

    The next step, I have increased the size of 40 GB using the following command:

    VMware-vdiskmanager - x 40 GB "F:\VM\Windows2008_SQL2005_MOSS2007_64bit.vmdk".

    Now, I noticed an increase as part of the Virtual Machine to 40 GB, but the virtual machine itself shows that the space used is 29 GB and I have 1 GB left.  When I try to install more software on virtual, I get an error message that there is not enough space to move forward.

    Is there something that I'm missing or do I need a fix / patch that I'm missing?

    Thanks for your time.

    You must resize the file inside the VM system.

    DiskPart should do the trick.

  • Students who need assistance for a virtual machine to run on hyper-v inside vmware workstation 12

    OK sorry first time here. I am currently a student and I have windows running R2 server 2008 as a Workstation VM. I activated the Hyper-v technology and got of no problem, the question I meet is that when I go to start a virtual machine, hyper v, I get the error failed to initialize. Initially, I had a mistake before, who told me he failed because he would not score, I think I've fixed this error by changing the. VMX file. I need to be able to start these machines virtual hyper-v because I am doing some laboratories for a class. Ideas, suggestions or help would be appreciated.

    Thank you for taking the time to read. I have attached a few screenshots of the error.

    Your processor is a Haswell, that supports AVX.  This problem occurs because Windows Server 2008 R2 does not support the AVX feature. See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2517374 for a fix or a workaround.

  • I have successfully downloaded the trial after effects CC, but when I open it, it says that it can not access the files inside my library preference (and does not open for this purpose).

    I use Yosemite OS X Version 10.10.3, and I have attached a picture of the error message. What should do?Screen Shot 2015-06-21 at 15.35.26.png

  • Our guests in ESXi running VMWare Workstation can join LAN

    Educaional purposes, I have the following configuration:

    1 'server' with 6 cores and 16GB of RAM

    On this server, I installed Fedora 15

    On fedora 15, I installed VMWare Workstation 7.1.4

    Inside VMWare workstation, I have isntalled ESXi 4.1

    Windows

    ESXi

    |

    VMWare W.S.

    |

    Fedora 15

    |

    Material

    Now, my problem is the following.

    Any isttalled of the virtual machine in VMWare Workstaion can surf the internet and see the other devices connected to the local network. Physical and virualized machines.

    Virtual machines installed in the ESXi peut obtain DHCP from the DHCP server on the local network or physical addresses.

    Virtual machines installed in the ESXi cannot ping the GW, nothing beyond the Gulf war or other machines on the same LAN. BUT they can ping the ESXi...

    For ESXi virtual machine is implemented with bypass and four NIC

    Now, anyone have no idea why my Windows machine gets DHCP but cannot send traffic the other way around? For me t looks like it stops at the level of the ESXi host. But I canoe understand why.

    T.I.A. for your time and help

    Welcome to the community,

    I'm not sure, however it could be related to fashion "Promiscuous" which may need to be enabled. See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/287

  • Access to the menu in VMware Workstation 7.1

    I just upgraded from Workstation 6.5 to 7.1 and immediately hit a serious problem: VM has when turn full screen, I can't access the menu of VMware.

    I press Ctrl-alt to ungrab and press Alt - W, Alt-E, etc. to open menus on top of the virtual machine. It worked well in 6.5 and now does nothing.  I have to leave completely full screen to access the menu.  I to this is a showstopper for me - I go to the menu constantly.

    Shortcut control-alt-left/right keys are also broken.  They concentrate the VM that switches, so if I want to move two VMs, instead of htting control-alt-right, I have to stop and ungrab the entrance again and again for each VM I jump over.  Shortcut keys also do work at all when not full screen.  (I use the VMware window menu to edit VMswhich is the biggest problem with the menu does notand I was hoping these access keys fast would be a partial workraround, but these two questions make it pretty useless.)  It also won't let me a list of choices and doesn't let me access a suspended virtual machine.)

    Are workarounds or the other of these known issues?

    Why don't you try quick 'Switch' option instead of using "full screen"?

    Major works of fast switch and hope that this option will satisfy your requirement.

    If you found it useful or appropriate, please note this.

    Thank you

  • Directly using a physical disk without virtual file system?

    I wonder if it is possible to directly use the physical disk with VMware vSphere Essentials Kit and will be that this increase in the performance of MS SQL database if located on this topic over on the virtual file system?

    / * the BONES still lie on the file system, virtual, or if possible - physics directly on disc again * /.

    Yes, you can use RDM with vSphere Essentials. RDM may or may not be faster, and many consider it's a wash. It would be interesting to test it for you, but don't assume that you will get performance much better with a vs the other. RDM can also complicate things like backup strategies.

  • Migration from VmWare Workstation to a server solution

    I am running 8 virtual machines of Windows XP inside VMWare Workstation on Windows 2008 (which I use as a workstation) in a box of Quad Core with 8 GB RAM.

    My plan is to move the virtual machines of Windows XP on a separate server and possibly add a bit more to their number. I would also like to migrate the server functions of the current WIn2k8 box on that same server. These functions are the portion of light file, very lightweight SQL server and a few other minor services.

    I am happy with VMWare Workstation and in particular the VMWare Tools application, because it makes the Windows XP virtual machines as reagent as if they were not VMs. It is important that after the migration, the virtual machines are as sensitive as they are now, given that I have would be to connect to them via ethernet to a Vista/Windows 7 machine by any means is the best (Office distance or something else).

    I would like to know what solution I should opt for, I think that the options are either ESX/ESXi (what is the difference here?) - am I right that the best way to buy, as part of VMWare Server or VMware vSphere - 1.x on WIndows Server.

    I have no requirements of availability/redundancy.

    This means that ESX has a management console - what is a Linux kernel, you can perform operations as if you were on a Linux machine.

    ESXi uses a very small SSH server and officially there is no way to interact with the machine on the console - everything is done by outside

    They give the same ESX features no matter what version you use, just to manage that you need to do differently.

    Of course ESX/ESXi works that on some hardware - there is a HCL and also a community supported the list machines that are capable of runnning ESXi, but are not supported by VMware.

    VMware server - can run on practically a Windows y / OS Linux

    Good luck to you ventures!

  • VMware esx 3.0 in vmware workstation

    Hello

    I am experimenting with using vmware esx 3.5 on my PC.  My PC is not vmware esx 3.0 compatible.  I've heard that I can install vmware workstation and then install vmware esx 3.0 inside vmware workstation.

    Does anyone know how it works?  What type of vmware workstation with this work?  Is it complicated to do, that requires a lot of configuration?  Or is it simple?

  • Access the disk very slow and steady

    Running VMWare Workstation v6.5.0-118166-Build, on Windows XP SP3 host (Dell Optiplex 755).  VM sessions are stored on internal 500 GB SATA 3 GB of disk.  After Windows XP SP3 is started in a virtual machine session, system response seems very slow; IE, by clicking on an icon takes several seconds to respond, launched apps take unusually long to load, etc.  Symptoms persist for several minutes after the start of the session XP.  Meanwhile, the indicator disk in VMWare Workstation shows status bar access the constant disk.

    I defraged the session, both within Windows and using the VMware Workstation defragmentation utility.

    Anyone have any ideas why this disk access continues for so long?

    Thank you

    Jack

    Yes, snapshots are, as well as all the contents of the folder of the virtual machine.

    Well, it seems that you have.  Using a virtual machine of independent origin identified the problem as long as the virtual machines themselves, who all had the same problem, because they inherited from their parent, all 46 chromosomes from the same source.

    So unless you want to determine what virtual machines is defective, you may be ready to mark this as a response.
