Can I safely remove the Windows.old files?

What's up guys?, I have a Compaq Presario supplied with the Windows Vista operating system, 32-bit. I backed up all my drivers on DVD and I downloaded a clean copy of Vista using an ISO on a DVD burner. I reinstalled the new copy put in my original product key, and he agreed. I reinstalled my drivers and all seems to work fine. I transferred all my data, mp3, jpeg, etc. for Flash readers and/or new programs on the new OS. The reason for the new OS was a virus infection which partially damaged the registry.  I really want to keep these files in the system for obvious reasons. Can I safely delete the files "Windows.old" and what would be the best way to do it?

Hello

My hard drive is currently filled by PC DM files in my folder/Public user folder.  How can I safely remove the right files in this folder?  Vista Home Premium 64 bit is my os.

    Hi templar_39,

DM (Message Delivery) file types are not Windows files, they can be generated by a third-party program.

This particular file type is often associated with audio data and can be hosted on some cell phones to be used as ringtones or multimedia clips. To my knowledge, these files can be generated by your mobile phone.

Note: you can go ahead and remove these files only if you notice that the files do not contain any important information.

If this happens without connect you all devices (like mobile PHONES), this may be a virus or malware activity. You can run a virus scan to get rid of them

Step 1: A scanner online for any threat and try to correct

    Hello

Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft Community Forums.

No need to worry, we're here to help you and guide you in the right direction.

The windows.old folder is the old system files. Be sure to copy all the files that you can out of the Windows.old folder before you delete it. Once deleted, they are gone. You must be logged in as an administrator to be able to do the steps.

The Windows.old folder contains the following folders:

    • Windows
    • "Documents and Settings".
    • "Program Files."

The Windows folder stores mainly programs and files that are required to run the previous version of Windows.

The "Documents and Settings" folder stores mainly the 'My Documents' folder and the Favorites folder. In addition, the "Documents and Settings" folder stores the office files that have been used by the previous version of Windows.

The "Program Files" folder stores mainly programs have been installed on the earlier version of Windows.

There are two ways to delete the windows.old folder. Here is the simple step.

Method 1: Delete the C drive.

    (a) open Windows Explorer, click computer.

    (b) select C drive and you will find the Windows.old folder.

    (c) make a right click on the folder and click Remove.

Method 2: Remove the "Windows.old" folder using disk cleanup

    (a) open Disk Cleanup by clicking on the button Windows + C to open the bar of charms. Click on the charm of the Search .

    (b) type cleanmgr in Search Applications box in the right pane, and then click cleanmgr.exe (disk cleanup) in the left pane to open it.

    (c) If you are prompted to choose a drive, click the drive that you have just installed Windows on and then click OK.

    (d) in the Disk Cleanup dialog box, on the Disk Cleanup tab, click clean up system files.

    (e) If you are again prompted to choose a drive, click the drive that you have just installed Windows on and then click OK.

    (f) select the Previous Windows installations check box and the other check boxes for files that you want to remove, and then click OK.

    (g) in the message that appears, click delete files.

Let us know the status of the issue. If you need help, I'll be more than happy to help you.

  • Why Windows 8 allow me to remove the Windows.old folder?

I upgraded my computer to Windows 7 to Windows 8, a few months ago, when Windows 8 came. It is my understanding that when you perform an upgrade of Windows from one version to the other, it can save a lot of files and folders under the folder Windows.old. And I understand that you can delete the Windows.old folder.

In other words, I don't think.

The reason why I do not think it is because whenever I tried to delete Windows.old, it stops for me with this error:

And when I said to 'Try Again' he begins from the beginning? HE DOES ALL THIS TIME! This should not do this, as I did do procedure on other machines that I've updated and he's NEVER done that, but not on this machine? Why in hell does?

    Concerning

  • Cannot reinstall Windows Vista because the Windows.old file is corrupted.

I hope someone can help! I'm about to pull out my hair! :)

I have a laptop Dell Inspiron 1720, under Windows Vista Home Premium, with 3 GB of ram. SP2

I had problems with error messages

Here are some of the messages I was getting.

    "Dell Quickset has stopped working"

"Windows Management Instrumentation has stopped working"

"The user profile service has stopped working".

    "Windows Update has stopped working"

There were a couple more but I do not remember. They are all gave me the ability to check online for a solution I have chosen and the message would go for a while, but not forever.

I'm tired of dealing with him, so I used my Dell disk to reinstall Vista. I did not choose the repair option first. I chose to do a clean install. When I got to the last step where it says "Complete the Installation", it gave me an error message telling me that the "Windows.old" file is corrupted. I do not have wright the rest of the information down, but he told me to run the check disk utility. (I think it has been shown as chkdsk). I clicked 'OK' and the screen went black and stayed like that for an hour. I turned off the computer and repeat all the steps but always goes to the black screen and stops. I tried to use the fix and it found a problem immediately and that fixed it, but after reboot, same thing. Yesterday I ran again the repair option, and it still works today. All night and nothing. She is still ongoing as I type this message. My question is how to run disk utility to check without an operating system installed? Use the "Diagnostic" option when I boot the disk from Dell? Any ideas on how I can get reinstalled Vista?

Boot from the Dell cd and run diagnostics

My computer (drive C) is a 9 GB of satiety, and I need to reclaim space for data.  Can I safely delete the files in the folder of reconstituted under my documents document library?

If not, how can I recover more disk space?

    Hello

You must understand a basic first concept.

Libraries in Windows 7 do not contain the physical files. They show only a virtual display of the physical files that are contained in other physical files that have been added to the library.

    Example:

By default, the Document library displays the files that are contained in the C:\Users\your utilisateur\Mes Documents folder and the folder C:\Users\Public\Public Documents .

If you simply right click and delete the Document library, it will not add any free space on the C: drive.

To add free space on the C: drive, you need to remove the C:\Users\your utilisateur\Mes Documents to the folder that contains the actual files.

Before you do, make sure that you have backed up the files you do not want to lose.

The best way to add free space on the C: drive, would be to move the Documents and other user folders to another drive internal or external.

    You can not remove it.
