can ping but cannot browse after you update to SP3 of XP

Hello

I use a computer connected wireless to a DSL modem. There are also three other computers connect to the same ADSL router wirelessly and they work fine.

The problem machine running Windows XP SP2 with automatic updates enabled. The computer connects to the Internet and works well, until he installed XP SP3. After restarting the installation of SP3, no normal Internet connection cannot be established with any browser. I tried Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google Crome. I just get an error page (Internet Explorer cannot display the web page) when you try to connect to any web page with a name. I can connect to a Web site through the IP address only. I can ping by IP address, but not by name.

I reinstalled XP SP2 now, for the seventh time, left to run automatic updates and each time after SP3 installation starts the connection problem. I have not installed Norton or any other anti virus on the machine programs, still having the same problem. I disabled the same Windows Firewall! No protection, nothing that the operating system on the computer and cannot always surf the Internet when XP SP3 is installed. When I stop the automatic updates before you install SP3, I can browse normally without any problems.

I searched through a large number of Web sites for a solution and trying all possible and impossible solutions offered: parameters examined, fixed network winsock, nothing seems to solve the problem.

Any help will be appreciated.

AirOnSkin,

You were right about the problem of dns, seems that I stared at the present time, even if it's just something temporary and not the real solution. Here's what I did:

First, I examined parameters network (again!) and the ipconfig enough & / renew options, as suggested by Joselbarra. All were OK and I did not any changes.

Then, I started playing with the ipconfig and ping commands in the command prompt window. I had my laptop next to the problem pc to compare the results of the pings I've tried. Ping and ping-a on the problem pc gave me exactly the same results, while ping - one on the phone gave me the name of the server!

Last sentence of AirOnSkin did the trick. I tried ipconfig/all on the problem pc again and there was no ip address for the dns, while on my laptop, I got the ip address for the listed dns!

So here is the temporary fix: in the TCP/IP settings I have the ip address specified for the dns and everything worked! For some strange reason the network settings is not get the IP for the dns automatically, and this happens only when I load XP SP3.

Now, it is up to the technical expert to understand why not bring a real solution.

Thanks for your help, guys!

See you soon,.

  • PC can ping but cannot see themselves in my network places

I have a network with several client computers running Windows XP with a network disk server. They could see themselves in my network places and access to shared content until we changed Internet provider. Since this moment PC is not mutually exclusive in My Network places.

I have searched for the solution, including Microsoft Answers and tried many solutions for this or similar problem but have failed in this case.

That's what I've tried so far.

I checked the properties of the network adapter and the following features are enabled: Client for Microsoft Networks, file sharing and print.

All PCs have the Windows Firewall and 'File and Print sharing' is in expectations, which means that the ports 135 139 are open and in addition, it means that the computer browser service is activated automatically.

I tried the two NetBIOS Over TCP/IP and the default options (settings use NetBIOS on the DHCP server).

On the PC, there are shared content with read and write permissions.

It implies that all PCs are in the same workgroup.

What should I do next to get that this corrected? Or what should review again?

    Thank you in advance.

I have just one more question. Why is it important to have ports 137-139 are open on the router if it is a local traffic (Layer 2)?

That is a good question.  Everything worked fine until the router has been changed, you are not double natting and all machines are getting the router DHCP addresses (no static address on any of the workstations) so we can pretty much eliminate the errors of subnetting or navigation on subnets as a possible cause.  The only thing that has changed is the router, nothing has changed on the desktop, so I can't believe that the router is blocking NetBIOS local, I don't know where the problem would be a lie.  If you still have the old router connect machines in it and see if things are working properly.  But you're right, you wouldn't open the NetBIOS ports to the external network, I just think that something in the router is blocking NetBIOS.

With regard to the Master Browser, General guidelines:

    • Make sure that all the machines are on the same subnet and same (correct) subnet mask.  NetBIOS can navigate across subnets without additional hardware or without a WINS server.  If all the machines are on the same subnet, but if the subnet mask is not properly configured the master browser may not work correctly.   These steps here are not usually a problem when all the machines are configured to obtain their IP addresses automatically and you have a router handling DHCP, if you assign static addresses do not neglect this important notice.
    • Select which machine will act as a preferred master browser and who can act as potential explorers, ensure that any machine not chosen to act as one of the above does not participate in the elections "browser."  Assigns the functions of master browser favorite to a machine that is always and usually always on, functions of "Potential Browser", a machine which is also usually under tension, a machine that can take charge if the favorite computer is not enabled.  DISABLE the master browser on all other machines, a machine is rarely turned on is a bad candidate for duties of master browser and can just cause of 'browser war '.

Disabling the computer browser service will indeed prevent a machine to participate in the elections of browser and become a master browser, but the proper way to disable the master browser is by defining the IsDomainMaster 'False' value and the MaintainServerList value to 'No' to the key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Browser\Parameters.

On the preferred Master browser set the IsDomainMaster value 'True' and the 'Yes' MaintainServerList to.  On the potential browser set the IsDomainMaster 'False' value and worth MaintainServerList on 'Auto '.  Unless the computer is configured as the preferred master browser, the value of the IsDomainMaster entry still has the value False or No .

But then, everything worked fine before the change in router, it stopped working after the new router was introduced into the network, so I don't see how the master browser settings have changed, everything seems to be pointing the router again.  Have you looked at the event journal relevant errors?

I think that the ISP routers are fine for limited use, but otherwise I don't really like the networks handling small office/work, I always prefer to have ones own router and placing the ISP router mode bridge, this way he usually is the least disruption possible to the network job when dealing with questions of the ISP.

    Jeremias,

If I understand you correctly, the PC connected to the Cisco router can resolve names to IP addresses and is able to ping outside the destination, but you can not browse the internet. Is this correct?

I think an MTU problem. Even if your router connects Ethernet segments only, there may be an additional encapsulation somewhere along the way, by adding an extra burden to your packages and possibly causing them to become oversized. Can you try to add the ip tcp adjust-mss 1360 to your interface Vlan1 please and test connectivity again?

Also, what exact IP address you receive via DHCP on your GigabitEthernet8 interface? Ideally, can you like after the output of the show ip route and show ip cef between your Cisco router? Also, please include the output of commands show ip cef 8.8.8.8 detail .

    Best regards

    Peter

  • Tecra A2 - connected to the WIFI router, but cannot browse

    Hi and help!

I have a Tecra A2 and using the huawei HG520b router, I have a connection ok, but cannot navigate. Been in contact with my provider, had 2 hours of help and they say it's a problem with my laptop.

I've updated the driver WLAN and now am losing to live... any suggestions would be great. Thank you

    Hello

Did you check if your router has an Internet connection? If your router doesn't have a connection, you are not able to navigate through the Internet.
    Check this box!

In addition, it would be interesting to know what browser you use. You can test another like Firefox or Opera?

  • I can't start my computer after installing updates to manualling

This happened almost a year and once from time to time I revisit the issue to see if I can find a solution.

I tried to download the new version of Windows Live Messenger. Installation did not work because I needed a certain update. This hard drive (I have several) was not install updates for a while. Up to this point, I just thought it was a nuisance, but not a major problem. Because my computer would not install the updates on its own, and I needed a special update for the new Windows Live Messenger, I went online to find the update to install. I got the update ID (I don't remember what it was) so I quickly found and installed. Everything seemed fine until I restarted my computer - or attempted to guess - after installation. My computer won't start. I get a screen asking if I want to start Windows normally or start windows repair.

Here are some of the things I've tried so far:

Start Windows normally: a screen comes up saying something about checking the disks and it is recommended that you do not stop the disk check. I do not have anything and immediately it says that the disk check has been arrested. He stays on this screen infinitely - believe me I left on this screen for hours.

Repair Windows: I used windows repair in the past for other problems and it worked wonderfully. This time I click to run windows repair and I go to a blue screen with the background of the blue sinuous line of vista but there is to this and nothing comes up.

Safe mode (and any version of safe mode): when starting, I pressed F8 to start the extended options. All safe mode options lead to the same thing. I get a list of drivers and it says please wait... It always gets stuck on \windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys and it is going nowhere.

I tried almost all the options in the F8 menu and they all be given the normal startup problem or safe mode

I then tried to do a repair of my disk of vista system. This time - unlike the previous attempt to repair windows - I got the menu normal repair. Unfortunately, the repair "attempted to correct the disk error" during more than 15 hours. I then shut down my computer, once again beaten by my computer.

I always use this computer with other drives with no problems. Thus, it is certainly a problem on the hard drive and must be associated with the update I installed manually before this problem.

    Help, please!

    Hi, EMP,.

Since you are unable to boot into safe mode and unable to repair the system, you can try to boot from the Windows Vista disc and try to perform a system restore.

Method 1: Try to perform a system retsore.

For more information, you can consult the following articles:

An update is not installed successfully when you try to install the update in Windows Vista and Windows 7

What are the system recovery options in Windows Vista?

    Method 2:

If you still experience the problem, then try to perform a checkdisk to repair bad sectors on the hard drive.

You can boot from Vista disk full or to run Checkdsk select command prompt from the System Recovery Options menu.

    a. Insert the installation disc.

    b. restart your computer.

    c. click on the Start button, click the arrow next to the button lock and then click on restart. If you are prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc.

Note: If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or a DVD, see the documentation provided with your computer. You may need to change your computer's BIOS settings.

    d. choose your language settings, and then click Next.

    e. in the System Recovery Options menu, click command prompt

    f. at a command prompt, type the following command and press ENTER

    Chkdsk /f /r X: (drive letter)

Note: When you run the checkdisk, there are risks of data loss you can take a backup before starting the checkdisk.

    g. press y when you are prompted to check the drive the next time the system restarts.

    h. close all applications and restart the computer.

Note: When you run the disk check, there is a chance of losing the data you can take a backup before starting the checkdisk.

     Hope this information is useful.

  • Win7 (Home Premium) cannot start after "important update"

I just bought a new PC with Windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed. After an update that Win7 launch is no longer, instead the PC reboots from the BIOS. Now, as I write to you from my old XP system, I do that I can't do this post shouldn't indicate that I found a solution. Using the utilities available / suggested at this stage, I can't understand what the 'important' update was so am not able to retrace the steps that may have caused problems. Currently, I run the system recovery, so maybe in a few minutes, I might be able to use the WIN7 PC again. However, I would like to know if anyone else is / has been faced with this problem.

    Hi isamart,

First of all, I suggest to start the computer in safe mode and see if you can boot to the desktop.

To boot to the desktop in safe mode keep tapping key F8 during restart. Once you see the option to start in safe mode select and press to enter.

Access the link to learn more about how to start the computer in safe mode: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

If you are able to access safe mode, you can try to check the update installed on your computer and remove it and check if that helps.

To view and remove the updates installed, follow the steps below.

    1. click on start

    2. in the start search box type appwiz.cpl, and then on enter.

    1. click on view the updates installed in the left pane.

    2. take note of the recently installed update in the list and remove the update.

    3. restart the computer and check if you can start.

If the steps above fail, you try to perform a system restore on your computer to an earlier date and check if you can boot to the desktop.

To restore the operating system to an earlier point in time, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, type system restore in the search box, and then click System Restore in the list programs.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type your password or click on continue.

    2. in the System Restore dialog box, click on choose a different restore point and then click Next.

    3. in the list of restore points, click a restore point created before you started having the problem, and then click Next.

    4. click on finish.

The computer restarts and system files and settings are back to the State they were in when the restore point was created.

Access the link below to find more information about the system restore.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/what-is-system-restore

I hope this helps. Let us know the result.

    Hello

    Have updates you installed?

You can check the KB number for the update in the update history:

    1. Click Start, click all programs, and then click Windows Update or Microsoft Update.
    2. on the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site, click on view update history.

Step 1: Unplug the power cable, the keyboard and mouse and then reconnect it back. Now, check if you're able to boot in safe mode (by using the arrow keys) or normal mode. Send back the same.

Step 2: Alternatively, you can restore the system from the recovery console.

    Hello

NATting is done before the encryption.

So if you want to access the server via its private IP address you must make sure you exclude the traffic to and from users VPN to be translated (route-map on the instruction of NAT is a typical way).

Otherwise move to DVTI database solution that should not be affected by this problem.

  • Installed Acrobat Pro, but cannot progress after the software license agreement screen

    Hi all

I just installed Acrobat Pro, but when I run it, I get the Adobe Software License Agreement screen with no text inside and with the buttons of towing, Quit and Accept. I click on accept, but nothing seeems to arrive and I can launch Adobe Acrobat! It's really frustrating! I use MAc OS X 10.8.2

    Please can someone help.

    See you soon

    Hi Saviomfx,

It is a known issue with Acrobat XI

Issue: Mac OS only. The launch, a blank screen of the EULA is displayed, that cannot be accepted and Acrobat does not run. This problem can appear if you have any of the installed products of CCM or Creative Suite and you tried to install Acrobat XI from a different source.

Solution: Launch any other product which is part of the CCM or Creative suite. Then, turn it off by choosing Help > deactivate. Quit the application. Then start Acrobat and accept the EULA. Then, for CCM subscription product, launch it and choose the license of this software to reactivate the product of the CCM. If a CS app, launch it and turn it back on.

    Please visit: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/known-issues-acrobat-xi-reader.html

    Or you can try this:

Go to Applications-> Utilities-> Adobe Installers-> Adobe Acrobat X-> remove Acrobat X using the application uninstaller.

Relaunch Acrobat XI and try to accept the EULA.
