For a single photo that you import pictures will store the original image file in a subfolder 'Masters' (~/Pictures/Photos Library.photoslibrary/Masters/) or in iCloud, according to your settings.  It will create an additional stamp file, files with faces found thumbnails and previews in the folder found, to share with other applications in the media browser.  Always use Photos interface to remove the photos or the library will become inconsistent.

  You can look inside the set of files grouped by ctrl-clicking on the library and using the command 'Show Package Contents': but make sure you do not move the files.
