Can't update without Windows of self-destruction!

After the update a few weeks ago... Bad software removal tool... My father PC had white exclamation points all on that screen P.O.S.T.... then the screen would go and NOTHING...! Restart, and then go to the Startup Repair tool... Windows Startup Repair tool cannot fix... you want to restore?... long story short... so the only thing that worked was a REINSTALL FACTORY...

NOW... I can't update anything... Update Windows and not even a no driver for the graphics card! If I... I will return to white exclamation on fullscreen P.O.S.T.... then NOTHING... points! I've restored the system several times and tried to update, only to have this accident to happen once I update... There's something like 83 updates and it's too much to try to step up to the problem... Heck I think is not yet get it until the first service pack!

On top of OFF... Microsoft tool for support does not even recognize its product ID... even when I enter it manually... all YES, I'm in the correct information!

As you can imagine, it's really a bad situation and bad support (no I don't want to pay Microsoft an another $50) it made it worse. After buying Windows since Win95, Xbox, 4 Xbox 360 (thanks to free material you knew was broken) and a Zune... I really think to change and do not return!

Someone at - he lived it and managed to isolate the problem... I have the exact system he has, even screen, same graphics card, etc... and I am able to update without ANY problem!

Thanks in advance! And sorry if I'm angry... I worked on it for about the last three weeks!

Dan

You are welcome. Your computer must NOT be connected to the internet or networks without a fully functional antivirus, completely update installed application. But first, let's take care of any Norton "leftovers"...

    1. download the Norton Removal Tool, save it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

    2. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

    3. click right on the file saved in #1 above, and then select run as administrator to run the utility. DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then restart.

Now, you will need to download/install an antivirus application. While I do not recommend professionally AVG, you might find that AVG Free 9.0 more compatible if you choose a CUSTOM this time installation above and don't install NOT of Linkscanner Search-Shield, Active Surf-Shield, security or the email of crawl components toolbar.

Otherwise, I can recommend Microsoft Security Essentials*, Avira AntiVirand Avast (all free) and NOD32 and Kaspersky (not the suites 'internet security'). After you have installed your AV application selected, manually & repeatedly updated until you get one invites 'no more updates'.

[Avoid Norton & McAfee IMHO applications.]

    Hello Linda,.

One of the problems that you have is not knowing the best way to use this forum. If a proposed solution to a question does not work, you must reply to this message and tell the person why he does not. You answer by clicking on the button answer at the bottom of the post.

Creating a new question for this issue, it is not the best way to get your issue is resolved.

That said, if you read the instructions I have given in this thread...

    http://answers.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/Forum/windows_xp-windows_update/i-am-trying-to-update-my-Windows-XP-Home-Edition/ae21928e-62B0-4D2E-92E8-a9f1d35da16a

.. you will see that I said you don't need SP2, you can go directly to SP3. This may or may not solve your problem of download, but I do not think. If my suspicion is confirmed you can try to download on another PC or use another browser like chrome or firefox?

If download you on another PC, you can save the service pack setup programs for, for example, a USB key, which you can then take the PC afflicted and run directly from the key.

If you chose to go with my instructions, answer in this thread or in the thread above but stick with you answer in whichever you choose. Do not start a new question and do not switch between threads when you reply.

Or, if you want to support PA supporter who also answered one of your questions here...

Method 1: Temporary connection error may occur when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/836941

If you do not disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network during the time that your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

  • I can't update to Windows XP (KB2656369) - the site has encountered a problem

I can't update Windows XP.  I scanned the various suggestions and tried several proposed solutions, nothing helps.  For example, I used various Microsoft 'FixIt' 'solutions '.  They fix anything, even if at some point, the computer ran at 50% of CPU all night, until I have made a difficult start in the morning.   I used msconfig to do not use 'start-ups' and load only the Microsoft Services.  I went to %windir%\System32 and renamed the "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" folder in smth else.  All this makes me a bit, but I don't get a resolution.  Here's what's happening.  I go to the "Windows Update" site.  I got now especially the time the problem "the website has encountered a problem..." "and to get to the place where it says"Custom Installation"or"Quick Installation ".  If do "Quick Installation", it starts to download the first file, but then gets stuck at the last 0.10 MB and just hangs there: I left turn overnight, several times, did not go anywhere.  So, I tried "Custom Installation", try just a single one of the elements that are listed there.  I tried the first, it was 0.5 MB or so download-very well, but failed to install.  The site recommends then click on "Update history", but which is empty.  I tried the whole procedure again to other items in the list.  For example, right now, I'm trying the "Security Update for Microsoft .net Framework 2.0 SP2 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x 86 (KB2656369) (update 1 of 1).  I downloaded it, it said to install, it landed in the Middle for about five minutes, now the green bar is full, but nothing happens (it seems to have the difficulty of finishing).  I'll let it stand overnight even once, see if it's going to be himself tidy, but I doubt.  I should mention that I have a "svchost.exe" process, sitting at 1,507500 Mo (which is 1.5 GB) 'Mem use '.  It is not a virus (I checked with Malwarebytes, as well as the auditor of MS, as well as various suggestions on the website - it comes to Microsoft).  Sometimes, this process consumes 50% of CPU or more.  Auto-update seems to have something to do with it: in all cases, auto-day do not what it is promising.

OK, what I'm doing wrong?  And what I don't understand: why I can not download the updates manually and install it manually?  It would be a step forward...  But more importantly: How can I solve this problem?

    Thank you. I'm trying.

aswMBR is really a great tool!

Symantec has always included instructions to turn off System Restore before analysis. No sense to me.
