Can time machine back up to an internal storage drive?

I have a 1 TB storage drive on my mac mini and have been back up my boot to that drive, but it doesn't seem to work. Should you use an external hard drive?

Thank you

Why do you say that it does not work?

  • Time Machine backs up too much upward

    Hello

I recently bought a Capsule 2 TB and my MacBook Pro using Time Machine backup. When first installed, I've caused a problem with the process and after that TM works perfectly, save every hour, I changed the name of the time Capsule and things this is ugly even if I tried to change the name back. I put the time Capsule at its factory, deleted all the previous data backup settings, it relinked on my Mac and restarted the initial upward.

Everything looks fine but now Time Machine back up to several times per hour, and at random intervals, sometimes without be planned. It doesn't seem to be taking additional storage on the Time Capsule, so it's more an annoyance that there are has multiple windows when I enter Time Machine or duplication of files. There are also 2 or 3 for each day more than 24 hours ago. I started back up only when it is plugged. I don't think that there is a problem with my power adapter/cable.

Any advice? Thank you very much.

Time Machine is designed to backup to local drive, if the normal backup target is disconnected.

I recommend you do a reset of time Machine.

Here see A4. He is old, but the method is still valid.

    http://pondini.org/TM/troubleshooting.html

Then reconfigure for backup of your TC.

Disable backups when the target is disconnected.

    See http://pondini.org/TM/30.html

IMHO, it may be useful to consider buying Carbon Copy Cloner or other backup software. Stop time Machine and use something that is more reliable and more controllable. It can back up to CT as does TM.

  • Old Time Machine back up is not recognized as such on my newly formatted mac

Hello I have a mac pro 2009 edition, running on OS Yosemite

I had an external HD to format Time Machine (TM), where I saved all my mac on. However I had to change my mac HD because it crashed and I installed a new SDS. I didn't recover all of my data on the new SSD, but I want to be able to access time machine to restore the items selected as iPhoto and iTunes. But when I plug my external, the computer reads as a regular external and I can't access it through TM and TM TM wonder to redefine a new external for backup of the TM.

If I select my old external as the new external TM will erase all old backup?

Is it possible that TM recognizes older externally as Time Machine back up? or is that, with each new HD, TM is new?

    Thank you

If you now select this drive for Mac with the new HD files o the drive will be not changed/deleted.

When you reinstall OSX and then try to use a TM backup you must first select this drive. What happens when you select this drive in the configuration of the TM and then try to restore the files through TM interface.

  • Is - this time machine back up the record of the iCloud drive in the Finder?

Background: I recently started using iCloud drive on my iMac with OS X El Capitan 10.11.5. I also continue to use a 3 GB CAP to automatically back up my computer using time machine.

Discussion: I copied some files more in player iCloud (under Favorites in the Finder) folder to appear on my drive to iCloud. Obviously the synchronization service iCloud provides is great, but I want to that I am also able to backup these files on my time capsule as well for peace of mind, and it would be a nuisance if I constantly have to move files out of the iCloud drive to another location on my computer to make sure that the files are also backed up regularly on the time capsule.

Question: Time Machine also backs up everything (all types of files - excel, pdf, word, etc.) that I added in iCloud drive folder on my computer?

    Thank you!

Yes. Time Machine back to iCloud by car, but not where you'd expect.

Look for the path below in your Time Machine backup...

    It's YOURdriveNAME > users > YOURaccountNAME > library > mobile Documents > com-apple-CloudDocs

  • How to transfer Time Machine backup to the new external hard drive

I'm upgrading to a 1 hard external to the Western reader to with 5 TB of Seagate.  This is because Time Machine has used the 1 TB drive.  How can I transfer the files from backup Time Machine from the old to the new drive so that backups continue to have access to the old files.

Although the documentation Apple says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it is very slow and sometimes does not.

This technique works only if the volume that you copy to the same size or larger that that you are copying to.

First of all, please open the Time Machine preference pane and click the Select Disk... button. You may be able to unlock the settings first, by clicking on the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window. Log in as administrator.

Remove the volume you want to copy in the list of backup destinations. Then turn off Time Machine.

Launch disk utility, open the built-in Help and search for the term 'Double '. Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be deleted. That shouldn't be a problem, because you do not want to mix non-sauvegarde and backup data on the same drive anyway.

If the volume you are copying has been encrypted by Time Machine, you must first unlock it. Click the release button in the toolbar of the disk utility window.

Turn Time Machine back on and select the new volume as a backup destination. Alternatively, you can continue to use the old volume, if you wish. Both will be alternated when both are available.

ATTENTION: If you copy the volume is corrupted, as shown by the ERD or first aid in disk utility, while corruption is copied to the new drive. Do not copy data from a damaged on a faulty disk volume. Put aside the reader and do not use until you don't know that you no longer need the data. Then securely erase it and bring it to a recycling center. Do the same if the restore operation fails with "disk errors."

  • How can I PREVENT Time Machine back on the wake from sleep?

I leave my machine on the work week and when I finished the night, I SLEEP there.

In the morning, he has no need to backup first thing. But Time Machine insists on execution from the moment I have a mouse and he wakes up from his sleep.

It was fine when it was new and fast, but now he is old and slow (especially - but mostly because I really push to the limit with multiple Safari Windows opens and executes a large number of software design at the same time, I have to do for work).

    My question is simple:
    How to tell Time Machine to does not have a return on the wake from sleep? or;
    Say this do not back up from 06:00 to noon? or;
Is it a third party plug in that allows me to customize the time Machine more?

Another idea on what just said or it to no return for even the first hour or two when it comes in the morning or even in any time to sleep during the day. Automatically.

I also have my drive main external file mirroring AND use Super Duper once per day to fool the internal drive (I total plan control) AND back up all files off site (I total plan control). But, Time Machine is also always at hand to get it done. If only I had a little control over it, so she did not have the necessary step back up the minute I sit down. Significantly slow down my work time productive morning!

Time Machine really shouldn't bog down your machine that badly.

If Time machine running interferes with your ability to use the machine, then something else is wrong. It shouldn't affect performance in this way.

If it's all just "annoying"... Well... Why is this a big deal?

Maybe you should run a report Etrecheck and post the results here. If something is moving your system, which can help us identify what it is.

What I usually do is delete the backup (via the shared disk) for this mini and start again, but after a month, the same message appears.

I Don t know if's got to backups in T.C. are just a single disk image (picture disc sparsebundle) for each account, not folders with dates, as does my macbook using T.M. on an external drive.

    I just can´t a solution to index?

    Thanks for any help

I Don t know if's got to backups in T.C. are just a single disk image (picture disc sparsebundle) for each account, not folders with dates, as does my macbook using T.M. on an external drive.

N ° it is in fact the way that Time Machine is designed to operate. The method is different between those locally fixed and network drives.

  • Time machine backs up only 5 GB?

    Hello

I have an external hard drive that I've implemented a Time Machine drive and I make monthly backups to it.

This is my second time back up my MacBook Pro, but the backup has been only 5GBs and it took 15 minutes while my first backup was 250GBs and it took hours, is that? He is only backing up changed data? My Macbook is always supported up to 100% (the files, settings...)?

It adds only the changed data. So nothing wrong with that: it's still all there.

  • Time Machine backs up with different users

    Hello

I have 4 users put in place on my iMac and regularly run a time machine backup.  Having never had to use the backup, I wanted to check.  The backup TM covers all 4 users, or is it just back up the files for the user who is logged?

    Thank you

The best way for you to get an answer to this question is for use you to try actually TM to restore a deleted file.

I am amazed at the number of people assumed that their backups are working properly, but the first time they check is when they try to get back it after a HARD drive failure...

Anyway, unless you deliberately excluded them for a reason, you should find that all the user files are included in backups of TM. Default TM backup almost everything, apart from a few temporary files and caches.

  • Time Machine could not complete the backup-backup drive is not found

    I get a message...

"Time machine could not complete the backup to Time Capsule

I can't find the backup disk. Make sure that the backup disk is connected, or select a different backup disk. »

I have not had this problem before, it's all connected...

If you have not already made a comprehensive network feeding cycle, it would be a good basic troubleshooting step.

To turn off some appliances, you actually pull the plug on the appliance.

Turn off all devices on your network, computers, routers, modem, printers, mobile devices, etc... in any order you want

    Wait a minute

Turn on the modem and let it run for 2-3 minutes by itself

Switch on the device connected to a modem and let run for a minute

Keep turn on devices one at a time about a minute apart, until the entire network is back

    Try a backup

  • Time machine does not recognize my external hard drive Passport

My 2009 iMac is 10.7.5 Lion BONES, 2.66 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB of memory, 1067 Mhz.  I have 2.62 GB free on a hard drive 320 GB internal.

My Passport external hard drive is formatted for Mac, 500 GB, and fully compatible with OSX 10.7.5.

He worked well with Time Machine for four months and now is not recognized.  It is recognized by my Mac Air 2012.

The Passport will run for about 10 seconds in the back to the top on Time Machine and then stop, with an error message, and then the icon disappeared from my screen.  Disk utility does not recognize.

All that info and you are unable to share the message with us? Too bad...

  • Time Machine does more work with LaCie hard drive

I've been using a LaCie 500 GB external hard drive to backup Time Machine and it works with any problem for almost month. That the player has filled, older backups have been laid as is supposed to be the case.

Now, I get a message saying that the disk is full, and that the backup has failed because there is not enough space. There are only 3.05 GB of available space, and the error message indicates that the backup drive should 4.7 GB for backup. I can't eject the disc, as the process seems to be stuck, and I can't close it. Any ideas how can I either rectify the problem or close the player and replace it with a bigger?

I'm on a desktop iMac, Yosemite running.

Contact LaCie technical support, read the user manual or post in the forums.  Better yet, since you are probably still under warranty with them, call their tech Dept support.

Search your number on the website of Time Machine.
