  You can get in trouble with your device drivers.  Go to Device Manager by going to start / find and type Device Manager and enter and then double-click on the program icon that appears.  Check each device to a red x, yellow! or white?  These identify devices with problems probably (drivers, but also of conflict or something else).  Click on each for more details and troubleshooting tips.  If you need to get drivers (and you shouldbring at least for an external hard drive and all you have time to do - they can help way beyond simply solve this problem), let the computer dealer or the manufacturer of the device (NOT of Microsoft Updates).  In fact, you must disable automatic updates in Windows Update driver as follows: http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/how-to-disable-automatic-driver-installation-in-windows-vista/.   Check the behavior in a clean boot, or insafe mode.  If it persists, you will have a problem with the external hard drive.

  I suggest you to follow the steps and check if it helps.

  Step 1: Give Permission to everyone and check if it helps.

  (a) right click on the folder you want to take control and then click Properties.

  (b) click on the Security tab, click Advanced, and in the permissions tab, click Add.

  (c) If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  (d) type like everyone else, the in called Windows Enter the name of the object to select it, and then click OK.

  (e) in the new window, give select full control and click OK.

  (f) click OK.

  Step 2: in the permission tab (follow step a and b in step 1 to open the authorization tab), if you have any user refused to try to remove it and make sure that include the permissions that can be inherited from the parent of the object is checked.

  1. do you get an error message/code?

  2. What is the model number of the external drive?

  3. What is the brand and model of the computer?

  In order to diagnose the problem, you can check if Device Manager disk external drive is listed:

  a. type devmgmt.msc in the start menu, run the box, then press enter on the keyboard.

  b. in Device Manager, check if the hard drive is listed in the list of devices.

  Method 1:

  I suggest you to connect the hard drive to a different USB port or connect the external hard drive to another computer and check if the problem persists.

  Thank you for your message.  The problem you are having is because of differences in formatting between PC and Mac.  You can, however, transfer your files between the two.  I will set out what must be done under and limitations of each.
  First, you will need to format the drive on your PC.  When you format the PC, you can format it in FAT32 or NTFS.
  (You mentioned that you do not see the drive in the computer) To format drive:
  Click 'Start' > right click on 'Computer' > select 'manage '.
  Click on "disk management".
  In the right pane, you should see your drive > you can then do a right click and 'format '.
  FAT32:
  This format will allow you to easily transfer files between the two.  This format becomes problematic when you transfer files more than 4 G.  There is a limit of 4 GB in FAT32, etc. of many movies are bigger than that and cannot be transferred using this format.
  NTFS
  This format has no size limitation, however, in its normal state it will be 'Read only' on Mac.  If you will not be able to transfer all the data itself.  While doing some research on the web, it seems that you can use a program called MacFuse on your Mac to change to NTFS files.  I have not confirmed this, but you can give it a try.  If this program works as planned, it would be the way to go.

  How old is the drive?

  I know that I had a problem once with a WD drive that had this type of behavior, and I could not use any utility software disc 3rd party on it to retrieve files or disk to repartition/format utility there. The drive is running but not visible anywhere on any Mac. My situation is that the drive had nothing of value to this topic, I used a top hammer so that nobody else could get something on it when I threw it in the trash.
