What about Clyde UK

Hi Clyde,

1. do you get an error message/code?

2. What is the model number of the external drive?

3. What is the brand and model of the computer?

In order to diagnose the problem, you can check if Device Manager disk external drive is listed:

a. type devmgmt.msc in the start menu, run the box, then press enter on the keyboard.

b. in Device Manager, check if the hard drive is listed in the list of devices.

Method 1:

I suggest you to connect the hard drive to a different USB port or connect the external hard drive to another computer and check if the problem persists.

Method 2:

Check out the link and follow the steps in the article:

What to do when a device is not installed correctly

http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-in/Windows7/what-to-do-when-a-device-isn ' t-installed-correctly

Hope this solves the problem. If the problem persists, you can write to us and we will be happy to help you further.

    Hi Peter,

Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft Community.

From your problem description, I understand that you are unable to transfer files from an external drive on another drive. Please let me know if this isn't the problem that you are experiencing.

Before troubleshooting, I have little information on the issue.

    1. Do you receive any error or display message?
    2. Did you recent hardware or modifications to the software on the computer before this problem?

Try the methods and then check after each method:

Method 1: Transfer files from a drive to the location on the desktop or a temporary folder and then try to transfer them to the destination disk.

Note: make sure the free space on the disk in the destination drive.

    Method 2: Run the Fixit:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/mats/windows_file_and_folder_diag/

Method 3: Disconnect your player safely, and restart the computer. And then try to transfer the files.

If the problem persists, post your reply with results and questions above. We are happy to help you further in the advanced troubleshooting steps!

  • I can't find my external hard drive under 'Computer' but it appears in "Devices and printers" How can I access files on my external hard drive?

I can't find my external hard drive in "computer".

I just bougth a new HP computer running Windows 7.  I just copied a bunch of movie files, music and photo of my old Mac (OSX Leopard) on a Western Digital external hard drive.

I plugged the external drive in my HP via USB 2.0 on the front of the computer.  Windows recognizes the drive.  She appears in the Panel of external control/hardware and Sound/devices and printers as "HARD disk".

It does not appear in 'Computer' under 'devices with removable storage ".

I just want to get to my files so I can copy them to my new computer.  How to access my files on the external hard drive?  Why isn't he appear in 'computer '?

    Hello ShamedMonkey,

Thank you for your message.  The problem you are having is because of differences in formatting between PC and Mac.  You can, however, transfer your files between the two.  I will set out what must be done under and limitations of each.
First, you will need to format the drive on your PC.  When you format the PC, you can format it in FAT32 or NTFS.
(You mentioned that you do not see the drive in the computer) To format drive:
Click 'Start' > right click on 'Computer' > select 'manage '.
    Click on "disk management".
In the right pane, you should see your drive > you can then do a right click and 'format '.
    FAT32:
This format will allow you to easily transfer files between the two.  This format becomes problematic when you transfer files more than 4 G.  There is a limit of 4 GB in FAT32, etc. of many movies are bigger than that and cannot be transferred using this format.
    NTFS
This format has no size limitation, however, in its normal state it will be 'Read only' on Mac.  If you will not be able to transfer all the data itself.  While doing some research on the web, it seems that you can use a program called MacFuse on your Mac to change to NTFS files.  I have not confirmed this, but you can give it a try.  If this program works as planned, it would be the way to go.
Please let us know if it did or did not solve your problem.

  • Cannot delete files on the external hard drive USB

There are records that I can not delete on my external USB hard drive that I'm starting to suspect are connected to Windows updates related to Visual Studio who fail everytime I try to apply (this is another question I've waited in vain an answer for on Microsoft Connect).  These files have names like f95b13d78bd4c3a41d86.

    b. click the Security tab

    c. click on Advanced, then the owner tab

    d. click on Edit, then your user name (make sure to check replace the owner of containers under..)

    e. click apply, then OK

    f. now, under permissions, click change permissions

    g. click Add, and then type your user name and click OK

    h. check the box allow under total control, and then click OK

    j. click OK, then apply, then on Close.

  • Computer unable to detect the external hard drive after installed update

original title: update for the usb drive problem

    2 things really:

Should I really all these updates unhappy? My computer spends much more of his time fiddling with updated it and update that never it does nothing I want to do. (Where do you want to go today? I want to lose my afternoon watching this stupid update new thing!) I'm sick of forever updated. And...

I keep losing my 1 TB ext HDD. My computer won't find it. I do a restore to when it was visible, and I can use it. Then miserable update starts messing around again and I lose it. It seems to me that the update is hiding my ext drive.

    Any help much appreciated

    see you soon

    Hello SidBloggs,

Did you first disabled automatic updates by following these steps: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Turn-automatic-updating-on-or-off

Once they are off have you tried every day updates individually and you determine who updates is causing the problem with your hard drive?

Maybe it's just that the update interferes with the driver that you have for your hard drive and it may need an updated driver.

  • NECESSARY COMPUTER ENGINEERING? LOL__ "Access denied" when I try to access my files on my external hard drive (NTFS).

NOT COOL AT ALL! lol - if I use an external USB DISK (NTFS FORMAT).

Windows XP Home Edition recognizes the letter of the root as E:

I have a folder called "MY STUFF" - on the inside, there are a few individually labeled folders my videos, music, files, text, programs, etc.

ALL I DID try me moving all these folders with files in them at the root of E: to save my self a click

HAVE EXCHANGE of OPINION, and you press CTRL + Z to undo the move and since impossible to access ONE of my files then, im!

OH NO.! My entire music collection, collection of movies, etc.

I ve tried ALL, DISK CHECK, the SYSTEM RESTORE, even reinstalled windows... NOTHING WORKS.

This is ONLY a problem with files I tried to move... all the other files on my external hard drive work fine as always.

WHAT WAS WRONG? PLEASE HELP :(

AGO, I tried, unfortunately it seems that this only applies to XP PROFESSIONAL edition... im running home edition again... he could not know, but someone suggested I try to use this small and useful software: UNLOCKER

    Here is the link

    http://download.CNET.com/Unlocker/3000-2248_4-10493998.HTML?tag=mncol

I still don't know what the problem was, but it worked PERFECTLY.

THINK ID recommend it to anyone with similar problems.

This thing is a godsend. the files that I have problems with has no lock on it handles but I used UNLOCKER to MOVE to my desktop drive Local hard drive c and they works perfectly.

After that I just moved my external hard drive em (they continue to work) and now all my problems are solved.
