  You cannot drag to add photos to a smart collection. To add photos to a smart collection, they must have appropriate metadata such as specified in the creation of the smart collection; or you change the smart collection.

  What version of iMovie do you have? iMovie 10 shows your photo library in the media pane of the project. You can directly add pictures and videos to your film project of this component.

  Pictures interface is a little interesting... up in the title bar, there is a set of arrows that comes of years the collection and finally moments. You cannot select an image until you are at times. Once you are at times, you can select an image and it can drag on the desktop.
