Cannot change the screen resolution

I recently had some problems with my computer that got me to do a full system restore and now my screen resolution is blocked as long as 640 X 480. I need to get it at 1280 X 768, but the box is grayed out and it wont let me change it. In addition, the monitor will identify only as 'Generic Non - PnP monitor'.

As far as I can tell, I've updated everything, after the restore, but the problem still persists.

I have a desktop HP and screen with Windows 7 Home Premium. Any other information that you need, let me know.

  • Cannot change the screen resolution. Help, please

    I recently reinstalled Windows XP (service Pack2) on my computer and restored the office to the factory settings. Now, the screen resolution is stuck at 640 x 480 and 16-bit color quality as this was not a problem before. The screen that appears under 'type of screen' in the advanced settings menu says "default monitor" and the properties button is not clickable. I tried to connect another monitor to the PC, but it doesn't help. Can someone help please I really need to change the resolution of the screen to a higher quality? Also, the PC has an internet connection if that makes a difference. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    ... What other drivers in addition to the graphics card and network card should I try to install?

    In fact, those who are newer than your current drivers.

    I understand your reasoning for installing the monitor driver, however, I'd personally chipset (motherboard), video, audio and network (LAN) first. After updating the video driver, there is a chance that it recognises so the screen correctly.

    I don't know if you have reinstalled Windows XP from floppy disks to install Windows or Dell installation/recovery disks or partition restore hidden, but nevertheless, the drivers that were installed during installation is as new as the installation media. Given that the media are at least 5 years and more (maybe 8 years and more), there is an excellent chance that all the material and device drivers have been updated.

    I think that this problem is resolved. The version of the agent is ok, but the combination of resolution, depth and refresh was bad for our display. With the right value, it works.

    Restore point:

    http://www.howtogeek.com/HOWTO/Windows-Vista/using-Windows-Vista-system-restore/

    Do Safe Mode system restore, if it is impossible to do in Normal Mode.

    Try typing F8 at startup and in the list of Boot selections, select Mode safe using ARROW top to go there > and then press ENTER.

    Try a restore of the system once, to choose a Restore Point prior to your problem...

    Click Start > programs > Accessories > system tools > system restore > choose another time > next > etc.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    If the above does not fix it:
    Go to the Web site of the manufacturer of your card for laptop / computer graphics / > drivers and downloads Section > key in your model number > looking for the latest graphics drivers for Vista > download/install them.
    Then:
    Change the screen resolution
    Screen resolution refers to the clarity of the text and images on your screen. At higher resolutions, items appear sharper. They appear also smaller, so more items adapted to the screen. At lower resolutions, fewer items adapted to the screen, but they are larger and easier to see. At very low resolutions, however, images may have serrated edges.
    See you soon.
  • Satellite A200 - 14 d: how many times can I change the screen resolution
    I would like to ask if often resolution change may damage the screen of my Satellite A200 - 14 d?
    Because now I'm programming in Assembly in resolution 640 x 480, and whenever I run a program, the screen should change its 1280 x 800 to 640 x 480 resolution, and it takes 1-2 seconds: it is empty, the backlight turns off, then the new resolution appears. I would like to ask if it permanently (often) could damage my LCD?
    Thank you.
    Don't worry man, it will not damage the screen ;)
    I know this is an old thread, but I came across it looking for a solution to the same problem. It turns out that my problem has a cause simple and simple solution. I had accidentally pressed the "multiple displays" function key on my keyboard (F4 on my HP Envy) and therefore affect my screen out of two monitors without realizing it. I started getting the error "the screen resolution is too low for this application to run", came here, tried to change my resolution screen and then realized what I had done. Once I changed the key function to the PC only, the problem has been resolved.
