Cannot copy files from C drive to external hard drive

Original title: backup on external hard drive

Can someone tell me how you back up C: drive of your computer on a hard drive external?  Unable to find mention of this anywhere.  Tried a right 'copy' but that doesn't seem to work.  Thank you.

Hello

1. what exactly is the error message you get?

2. in which the reader is the installed operating system?

Operating system files can be copied to another drive. If it is installed in the c drive, and if you try to copy as well, then try to copy only your personal files such as photos, emails.

  • Error message "unable to copy the file"hiberfil", it is used by another person or program." Problem copying content from your PC to external hard drive.

Original title: problem to copy content from your PC to external hard drive.

I use Windows XP 2000 and am trying to restore my pc to factory settings as it is continuously 'stick '. When you try to copy my drive "c" on an external drive I get a message saying "unable to copy the file"hiberfil", it is used by another person or program." Close any program that might be using the file and try again "." What is 'hiberfil' and how do I close it down as I am not aware that I use?

    Concerning

    Pete

The hiberfil.sys will be created every time that you start... If you put in hibernation enabled in your control panel, Power Options and the file is 'open' to think that you can actually choose to Hibernate at any given time.  When you Hibernate XP gives a note of it and will write a hiberfil.sys sometimes important in the c:\ folder so that when XP fires again upwards and returns from hibernation, XP will read the hiberfil.sys file and return to the situation that you were in when you put into hibernation.

I use to be a chronic hibernant because it takes less time to return after hibernation as a cold start.  Sometimes, it can actually be slower that a cold so start your system based on the amount of RAM has.  The more RAM you have, the more your hiberfil.sys will, if sometimes it's faster to move with just a cold start if you Hibernate (26,03 seconds for me).

If hiberfil.sys is giving you a hard time (you would not in any way copy it) disable hibernation in your Power Options and the file will be deleted immediately since it would be is no longer necessary.  That would solve this, but if you are trying to copy the entire C drive, you will have other files to complain after that.

It is certainly possible to make a complete copy of the C drive, if you want, but you will have to initialize on something next to your drive hard if you want to do this so the XP files are not used - then you can copy anything and everything.  You can get some imaging software of disc that will also help you.

It depends on what the problem is you want to solve and what you wand to end up with when you're done (so far, unspecified).

I would work on figure our why your XP is paste and fix it in place.  XP should not be sticky.

Cannot copy files from HD to CD by using wizard. Have been able to do for a long time. Without warning is no longer possible.

    Hello

The format of the files you want to copy basically described what kind of files they are. Word documents, of .mpg, jpeg, etc.
However, it seems that the problem is with the drive itself, not individual files.

You happen to have any installed Roxio program? Specifically, Roxio Easy CD Creator?
If so, you should remove this program, restart the computer and try again.

  • Cannot copy files from a USB USB Kingston on WD external hard drive

When I try to copy large groups of a Kingston DT101 (32 GB Tumbdrive) files on an external hard drive WD (WD3200MLSP: 32 GB) the computer does nothing and there is no "Copy" dialog box I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers but it does not work. However, when I copy only the sections of the USB hard disk, then copy works. I use the Ctrl + C to copy the files and the light on the USB flashes on then off. Then, when I navigate to the folder on the hard drive and I press Ctrl + V to paste the files, the light on the USB key turns on and remains lit. However, the lights on the hard drive WD do nothing.

It depends on the size of the file.

It files are 4GBs or more and the player is formatterd to FAT32, it will not transfer due to limitations of size of FAT32 file transfer...

    See you soon.

  • Really slow copying files to iMac to Seagate external HARD drive

I have an iMac mid-2011 running El Capitan, and I'm having a problem copying through large files to my TB 5 Seagate external hard drives.  The copy process is so slow that it is useless to try to back up files more.  Does anyone know what I can do to fix this problem?  I found a thread from 2013, mentioned that Spotlight indexing is the problem, but no luck so far.  Anyone got any ideas?  Thank you!!!

What size is the drive? How are you connected to it? How big are the files?

  • Windows XP - a problem to transfer big file from laptop on an external hard drive

I have a problem to transfer large files (mail.pst - zipped file - 5Gbyte) of the laptop (Dell Latitude D630) on an external hard drive (WD 320 G - FAT 32) where each time, I got the message "there is not enough free space on the disk" although I did successfully drive clean on both sides and there is enough space on both sides (not less than 25 GB).

Also, I did a checkdisk command and he succeeded, and I use Windows XP

I did several tests to resolve and in the end, I found that I convert the format of external hard drive FAT 32 to NTFS, and then I could successfully transfer the file.

    I used the following commands:

    (1) command line then chkdsk to repair bad sectors

    (2) convert the command line to change the format to FAt 32 to NTFS

Note: For Windows xp, "convert" command will not delete the files from the hard drive

Original title: crash and recovery of hard drive problem

My hard drive crashed it wouldn't boot saying config.sys is damaged or corrupted, I tried to fix it but the sector is damaged. I was using XP, I had a password on my settings. I installed a new hard drive and reinstalled windows XP, but even if I can 'see' the old hard drive (always installed) I can't access my documents, how can I get to them? I know the password but since its an account on another drive it won't give me the chance to log on to the account.

  • Transferring files from MacBook Air on external hard drive

Regularly, I backup to an external drive.  But my MacBook air becomes full and cannot update its software. So I want to permanently delete folders from my MacBook on the external drive and then if I need these files I just access it from the external drive.   How to do this?  Help, please.

    Thank you.

In general, files that take up the most space are music, photos and videos. Those who could be moved to an external drive. But if your external drive is not saved, and it fails, then you lose these files.

One of the great benefits of owning a MacBook Air is not having it connected to external devices. Perhaps you should consider the upgrade of its internal drive for a larger model.

  • The VM cannot copy files from a network share on the host

I get the error "unable to copy xyz123: cannot read from the source file or disk.» When you try to copy a file to a shared folder.

    • The shared folder is located on the machine called VM-SERVER, which runs in Workstation 6.0.4. The folder is shared with everyone having full control. Security settings say that DOMAIN\Domain users also have complete control.

    • Any user who connects to any guest VM on VM-SERVER, which is the host of all the VMS in the Organization, can not access the file for copying, although registration to the directory is there (although slow to come). If the same user connects to any other computer on the network, any computer of VM-no-prompt, then he can access the files on the share on VM-SERVER with no problems.

    • VM' are the guest all configured with Bridged networking like they serve other users on the network. I disable the VMWare adapters. I insert the DisableDos key with a value of 1 as indicated by the FAQ, I restart the VM host operating system and the virtual computer guests.

    • VM-SERVER running Windows Server 2003 R2 x 64. It has 2 1 TB SATA drives, and the action in question is physically located on the D: drive.

    • The VM guest OS are XP Sp3, Vista Sp1, Windows Server 2003 R2 x 32 Business.

    • None of these comments VM are able to access the contents of the files on the share on VM-SERVER.

    • All computer virtual guests are able to access shares located on another server, the primary domain controller of the network that is running Windows Server 2003 R2 x 32.

Accordingly, I'm worried because the concept of the virtual computer for critical business was my decision and up to the exception of this scenario (and a recently resolved USB printing problem) it went well. Unfortunately even a mess can stop production.

Note that I have read the FAQ and tried the suggestions that seemed to apply.  I also looked in the forums and haven't seen a specific question/answer.  If there is an answer out there and you read this point please make me, orperhaps you have another suggestion?  I am open to all theories and possible solutions.

  • Cannot copy files from Windows XP during installation.

While Windows reset through the repair track (not the console repair) using the original disk of XP, 44 files could not be copied. I turned off the antivirus Avast. Then again 29 files (including the migregdb.ex_) could not be copied. Once the process is completed the win XP works, I can connect to the internet and exploit all the programs, BUT research, help and Support, and then Windows Update stopped working. No idea how to overcome the problem of file copy will be appreciated.

    Hello

Disconnect all external devices to your computer and see if it works.

You can also use a different Windows XP installation disk and check if the problem exists.

  • Cannot copy files from a corrupted on a new user acct

For some reason my user account was in sashes. I wasn't able to access the system restore. I did a restore and it allowed me to create new user accounts that my old files were still on the drive under the old user acct, I am not able to copy on. I tried to use the procedure described in article 811151 but the old user account folder is not accessible (access denied). I tried to change the permissions under safe mode, but that makes no difference. Any ideas?

Article Microsoft KB811151 will not work as described if you reinstall as you.  The problem you have now is one of the owner.  The following article should allow you to adapt your old files and a directory and to regain access:

  • Cannot copy files from USB key!

I have a picture of game size 4.17 GB. When I was trying to transfer it to my USB drive (16 GB), it displays message that the drive is full, so that only 8 KB was filled. I tried to copy another image of the game, but the same thing happened. Other files and songs, movies can be easily transferred but not game footage. Help, please!

Pendrives are usually formatted in FAT32. FAT32 is limited to files under 4 GB. This is probably your problem.
