Cannot display anything in vista
I'm currently running vista Home premium 32-bit operating system. This morning I found that I have all my icons, but no icon names, cant access any programs at all because everything is just these small square boxes. I am unable to do anything as nothing is readable. Anyone has a solution for this or do we not have a virus? If you need more information, please let me know.
Hello
AA as well as the problem of "small square boxes" which is the part "nothing is readable." as in what cannot read you, and what now looks unreadable words.
Download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware in Mode safe mode with networking:
http://www.Malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
And here's how to go in Safe Mode options; Select safe mode with networking from the list of options:
http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/start-your-computer-in-safe-mode
If you have not installed malicious software, try a system restore in Mode safe mode with networking (you) until the problem started:

Cannot download anything in vista Home premium
I'm not able to download anything with my vista home premium. I have windows defender and windows firewall. How can I fix this so that I can download the drivers I need.
Hi Stanley,
(1) download the files\drivers which web browser do you use?
(2) you get an error message?
(3) remember you to make changes prior to this problem?
Disable the security software and then check if the problem persists. Follow the steps mentioned in the link below
Disable the antivirus software
If you use a non-Microsoft security software, you can check the documentation provided with the program to achieve this.
Important: Re activate security software once everything is done.
You can activate the port in the Windows Firewall, see the link below
Open a port in Windows Firewall

I've recently updated Shockwave Flash to the latest version v11.3.300.257 and the last version of Firefox v13.0 and Flash seems to work more. When I check the Add-ons, Shockwave Flash is listed as 'enabled' and 'to date '. It doesn't seem to be any blockage of the plugin either. Flash works fine on Internet Explorer(also same Flash version). I tried full uninstall and reinstall the latest version of Flash, always Flash videos and nothing will not play Flash, kept asking me to install flash on some flash based websites. In addition general reinstall, then reinstall fresh, I also tried to install 32-bit and 64-bit FlashPlayer (listed for IE and Firefox ("' other browsers")). Firefox is restarted each time after installing, I couldn't understand what the problem is please help...
I found the solution!
The Solution proposed by Firefox on this issue, according to the list of 'cor - el' is only partially correct.
This solution provided by Mozilla, you must disable Realplayer browser recorder for the Firefox Add-ons Manager. That may not work for everyone (like me) because it only disabled the plugin on the Firefox side (it should be disabled by default anyway).
You must also turn off the browser side of Realplayer, download media by:- Open RealPlayer
- Click on the menus of "RealPlayer" logo on the upper left of the window
- Go to "Preference", then select "Download and save" and uncheck "enable Web download & recording for these browsers installed.
- Click 'Ok' and exit Realplayer, restart Firefox, if you had opened it.
- You are ready, Flash on YouTube and Flash related questions errors should be resolved.
Goodjob, thanks for all the support guys!

I don't have access to all programs do. Even the answers on this site so far await you to be able to run other programs of some sort. I'll have to write this on PC of the wife. Any help / suggestions gratefully received.

You can use Windows Defender in offline mode, use a PC secure and download and use:
http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/what-is-Windows-Defender-offline
And then use removable media or a CD/DVD and create the startup and startup disk in your infected PC and then run a full system scan. You have no need to start your system in this way.

Windows Update: problem webite cannot display the page
Just install a new hard drive and reinstalled the original XP Media Center operating system. I get this error when you try to get the windows updates: the site has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below may help you solve the problem. Help, please.
@Whitebearmike
Question for you: what is the level of service pack of the operating system XP?
If no or anything under service pack 3, you need to get to service pack 3.
Run WINVER to check the service pack level.
If your XP is the gold (no service pack) version or even the sp1 or sp2 windows (iirc) then automatic updates will not work.
You must have service pack 3, but so that you have either installed SP1a or SP2.
Please review carefully. Make a backup of your system offline media (before & after each service pack).
To download service pack 2 - see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=186637
To download service pack 3 - see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=183302
I invite you to do a mirror image of system backup once SP3 is correctly in place. Mirror-image backups are on the only good way to come back to a clean image, if and when disaster strikes.
You can use the following to install the service Pack XP
http://aumha.NET/viewforum.php?f=73
http://aumha.NET/viewforum.php?f=83
Note: MS is supported for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) ended on July 13, 2010.

HI Maria/Winston.Not, trying to be coy but. I've never had close the firewall to load anything. It will be, or at least should invite you to make a choice to leave the program to run or not? Nevertheless. If you have windows activation hurt you firewall can reactivate manually without going through the bugs that you can not. If you click Start and choose the runtime application. Type cmd, and then press ENTER. When the command prompt box appears type "netsh winsock reset" without the quotes. He'll say firewall reactivated and ask for a reboot. Restart the computer and it will be active again. Just trying to help.
Hi Winston/Hewlit,
Thank you both for your advice. While waiting for your answers, I pushed all sorts of buttons and downloaded all kinds of programs in the hope that I could break the firewall (Hewlit the printer I tried to install says to disable the firewall to install the printer, and then turn it back on?).After a reboot, the message 'corrupt windows\system32 etc' file came and asked me to put in the original disc of Windows XP, I did not.Cut a long story short, I have now booked for a technician to come out as I'm totally lost. Thanks again for your help,M -

kimlife,
Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Answers community forum. There are a few things that can cause this. One is a damaged normal.dot template, one is a damaged printer driver, and the other would be a sort of third part add in. Start with the simplest to try so that replaces the normal.dot template.
Click Start, click search, and in the search for box, type normal.dot. There should be a search option you can check "Search hidden files", which is checked. If it does not, try searching * .dot. It can be difficult to find because it is a hidden file. You may have to go into options files and make sure that 'show hidden files' are ticked. Whenever you find the normal.dot file, rename the old.dot and restart your computer. Open Word and it will create a new normal.dot template, which is what Word uses as a document is empty by default.
If this does not work, read this article about a third-party add-in that can cause this problem:
