Cannot format external hard drive

Formatting an external hard drive
I can't get my external hard drive to format, the window says it is not formatted, so can someone please help me get this format?

It is a 20 GB 2.5samsung, or is this even compatible with a Telechareger?

Hello

1. What is the brand and model of your external hard drive?
2. you have any data on the disk?

Try to format the drive on another computer and check if it helps.

In addition, run the command chkdsk (check disk) on the disk.

Follow these steps:
1. click on start and then right click on computer.
2. click on properties.
3. now click on theTools menu, and then click check now.
4. Select the external hard drive.
5. check the "automatically fix file system errors" and "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors".
6. click on check now.

Kind regards

The drive letter for my external hard drive has changed itself, I have tried to change the letter back to what it was, but still cannot access the drive.  Diving is in my computer, but when I try to open it it tell me I need to format.

    Hello

I suggest you to contact the manufacturer of external hard drive for better assistance.

  • Format external hard drive for "Photos"?

Go to my library of Photos together a new external hard drive which will be connected to my iMac. Suggestions on the layout of form or something else I might want to think? I would like to change is moving with it, too.

10.11.3 running; connects to the "OWC Mercury on the Go Pro"

Plan to just drag my photo library on (it is huge - over 400 GB). Maybe create a new library of pictures, too, but store them all on the EXT HD.

It must be partitioned and formatted for use on your Mac:

    1. Open utility disk from the Applications\utilitaires folder.
    2. After loading disk utility, select the external hard drive (entrance Out-bumpy with of the mfgr.) ID and size) in the list to one side. Click the utility tab Partition or delete in the toolbar of disc. Adjustable circular diagram to set the number of partitions if you want more than one.
    3. In the Group dropdown set the GUID partition scheme. Define the type of Format Mac OS extended (journaled).
    4. Click on the apply button and wait for button done to activate it.
  • Disk utility finds several files and folders after formatting external hard drive

It is somewhat an Enigma to me. I bought an external hard drive that I wanted to use to store my Time Machine backups. I formatted in Mac OS extended (journaled case-sensitive) without any problems, however, I noticed that disk utility indicated that I had 18 and 59 files (space used = 448,1 Mb)!  I ejected the disc, it reconnected and utility found 64-19 records to disc now! How is that possible? What is going on?  I used the 'diskutil list' command on the Terminal, and I found the following:

    / dev/disk2

    #: NAME SIZE TYPE IDENTIFIER

    0: GUID_partition_scheme * GB 500,1 disk2

    1: disk2s1 EFI EFI 209.7 MB

    2: Apple_HFS disk2s2 backup 499,8 Gb

I see there are 2 partitions, even if I made a partition during formatting of the drive.  I don't know if this 'normal' or if I'm doing something wrong. I would be very happy any help you can give! Thank you very much!

It's normal. new disc format have information. When you start the firmware queries drives to see what is on them to find if they ae bootable

  • Cannot load external hard drive .itl file

I'm trying to migrate my itunes to an external HD to new computer, Windows 10.

The old computer had reached a miserable end of life due to obsolescence and lack of resources.

For example, shortly before he died, I thought how to move all files including the media and the. ITL and the. XML for the EHD files.

It seems that this may have complicated problems for the current process.

The former. ITL file is there and intact. I try to IMPORT PLAYLIST, which is the closest thing to what I think I need, and it says that the file cannot be imported because it doesn't seem to be a valid exported file.

I try to import the .xml and it is said that some of the songs in the Itunes music library file were imported not because they are not found. It means everything.

I tried to hold the ALT key and open Itunes, as seen somewhere, but it's apparently a MAC function only. Windows opens a properties box, will not open the program and allow selection of the library as described.

I also just tried dragging the .itl file itunes such as discussed in migrating to a new computer, but appears not to work either.

If the old computer worked in anyway I will try to export the file. But alas, this is not an option.

I currently complete my collection, but any piece of data has disappeared. I would really like to return?

    Thanks for nothing.

    Frank

Hold down the SHIFT key while you start iTunes.  When you arrive it is fast:

Click choose a library... then navigate to and select the iTunes Library (.itl file) hard disk external.  This is the only way to get iTunes to use a specific library - import, a double click, etc. have no effect.  Once you've done this iTunes will continue to use the library selected (without having to use the SHIFT-Start option) so that the external hard drive is connected and its drive letter does not change.

You may need to check the layout of your iTunes library on the external HARD disk is correct - it should be like this:

More specifically, the iTunes Library.itl file should be in the folder that contains the iTunes Media folder.  See tips to the user of turingtest2 on do a split cell library for more information.

    Hi Joshua6495,

What is the full error message that you receive?

See the article below, which deals with a similar question

During installation, you are unable to format a Partition with a file Allocation Table Format

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/301340/

You can use the Windows XP installation disc as many times as you want on the same computer

Note: All programs on the computer and the data will be lost if you format the hard drive. It is recommended to make a backup of your data before performing any Installation of Windows.

  • Cannot find external hard drives - Windows XP Media Center

I just got a new external HDD two days ago in the case where my old drive never fails. I have connected both to my laptop and copy all my old files from the old drive to the new. Yesterday, I clicked on 'Stop' under 'Remove hardware safely', and both readers suddenly stopped being recognized by my computer. When I plug in, they light up and run, but their records are not displayed in my computer. I don't get any error message (or any kind of message), but they always show upward under Device Manager. I tried to move the USB cables, restarted my computer, update device drivers, do a system restore and run a virus scan (some files on my drive C: disappeared recently, however, the scanner found nothing). I also tried to attach external hard drives to other computers, but they are still not recognized. Please help - I have files that cannot be replaced and the new cost of drive hard $100, and I don't want to go through the hassle of trying to get a replacement without warranty or invoice.

Hard drives not recognized in all other computers as well? There lies the problem.

Try to connect to some other computers (XP, Vista or 7) and see if the problem repeats.

If so, your disks are dead (because no computers detect them).

Download and run the utility to diagnoses of the Web site of the manufacturer of the hard disk to check for disk errors.

  • Formatting external hard drive

When I plug in my external hard drive, it asks me to format the drive.  But when he tries to format it, it says that windows could not complete the format.  He said so make sure that the disc is not dead? I tried to format it through cmd, but this also does not work.  It's to do with the fact that the partition is RAW?

You have all the data in the drive?

If so, back up the data on another computer and then put it on another computer.

  • Format external hard drive

    Hey guys
I used an old hard drive from the laptop to create a usb key recovery for a netbook without a disk drive.
How do I now the format of the hard drive for use again as it is no longer present on my pc, if I set to boot from it, it get up she just try to run recovery which was copied on it used.

    shig1,
If the only thing on the external drive is recovering files to the netbook, then chances are that your PC is not going to see this player.  The two computers to the same operating system or are they different?  If you don't need the files on the external hard drive recovery and see it the netbook, you may need to format it on the netbook so then the PC should see it.  But if you need to copy the files of recovery out there, I don't know what to tell you.  I would recommend to put these files on the hard drive of the netbook and get an external optical drive that you can make a CD or a DVD backup recovery files.  The two computers are linked by chance?  You can connect and use the transfer tool to copy the files from recovery on your PC, so you can burn it to a CD and then you could be formatted externally.

Transfer files and settings from another computer

  • cannot use external hard drive 1 TB for readyboost

can I use my 1 TB WD external hard drive (fat32) for readyboost... I have win 7 home premium (64-bit) & 2 GB of RAM right now I get a message saying that this device (1 TB drive) cannot be used for readyboost... but I can easily use readyboost when I insert my 4GB kingston USB...

To see the true performance increases you'd be better by upgrading the amount of RAM you have. I am surprised that you have Windows 64 bit with only 2 GB of RAM...

  • Windows could not complete the format (external hard drive)

I use windows 7 64 bit and my external hard drive crashed and has converted his car to RAW format rather than NTFS

I tried to solve the problem by changing the name of 'L' discs to other letters and retry the format without success

I also tried to use the disk management format and changed to an optimal device

And also I tried using diskpart.exe

This has not just to reformat the drive, so I can use it I do not have the information about this because it's still all on my computer any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

    Hello

could a. you give us the exact error message and the error code, if any?
    b. what commands did you tried the diskpart utility?
    c. I recommend to do the full format rather than the quick and check.
    d. also try to format the drive on another computer and check.

I recommend you to use the clean command to remove and format all partitions on the external hard drive and check. See the article below for more information.

    Hi Itay,

Thanks for posting on Microsoft Community.

I understand that you get this error "the application \Device\HarddiskVolume4\Windows\System32\svchost.exe prevents this device to be stopped. Close the application and then try to stop the device again. "Whenever you try to eject the external hard drive.

You may get this message if Windows was started with the inserted disc. Try to wait until Windows is completely loaded before inserting it, then if you try to eject it doesn't work.

You can try the suggestions below and check if it helps.

    1. Download Process Explorer from the link below http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653
    2. Click search, find handle or DLL (Dynamic Link Library) in the tool menu.
    3. Type the drive letter of the USB device in the handle or DLL substring text box and press the search button.
    4. Find the process and its PID (process identifier) in the following box.
    5. In the tree of the system process, find the process according to find it handle or DLL dialog box.
    6. Press Ctrl + H to display the handles in the view in the lower pane.
    7. Search for the file by the drive letter and right click, choose Manage close.

  • Satellite L305D S5895: Win 7 cannot find the HARD drive or cannot format the HARD drive on a clean install

I have laptop Satellite L305D S5895 of the customer. It was delivered to me by the customer who tried to install Windows XP Pro, Vista and none would install.
He said he tried all the CD that he had finally dropped on it and delivered it to me installation.

When I got the score have been removed, so I tried to install Win 7 and when I do a custom install, I get an error indicating that the hard drive can not be formatted on disk 0 or it will give an error that no hard drives have been found.

I have reset the bios default and no matter what I do, it won't format or find the hard drive. I was going to upgrade the bios, but the only way I found to upgrade the bios is once windows is installed.

Everyone has ideas about this laptop so I can get a system installed. I checked the bios and there is no parameters for a sata, raid or IDE disk drive, so it seems that this version cannot be changed.

Thanks for anyone who can help you.

    Hello

First of all it is an American notebook series.

The laptop supports a processor AMD and ATI chipset.
This means that the drivers SATA is part of the ATI graphics card driver.

You must include the first SATA driver in order to install the Windows operating system.
You could add the SATA driver for the Windows disk using software like nLite / vLite
