However, when I click on the star, nothing happens.

I tried refreshing and it does not yet mark the answer as helpful.

As the original poster, you can mark one or two answers as useful and the other as solved. According to the page refreshes, you can still see the buttons when they are no longer active.

    is already marked as a question, and I see that already two answers are marked as useful. There is a limitation in the forums up to two answers can be marked as helpful by discussion.

    So I think, you won't be able to mark the third reply as useful.

    However, you can mark it as correct, but it is up to you.

    Is there a way to disable this option?  It never made sense to me that you could do that.  If I ask where can I find the place to change my screensaver and someone posts a response telling me how and where to and I say thank you and this answer as "solved", whatever that will help the next person coming who does not know where to change their screen saver either?

    I asked this question of guests for years. Invariably, the answer is "sometimes the OP will provide the solution to a problem expected to so be able to mark their reply as having solved the problem". Like you, I find the number of times that an OP find their own tiny number of times solution wherever they celebrate their 'Thank You' as having solved the problem.

    Guests do not seem in any hurry to change that.

    The operating system is Windows XP Home Edition.  I use browsers IE 8, Safari and Mozilla Firefox.
    I'd never see this error until I installed HDDScan (http://hddscan.com/), a diagnostic utility, to check my hard drive.   The test is a S.M.A.R.T. analysis and produces this error message when you use this software.
    A web site indicates that installing Microsoft. NET Framework can solve this problem.  I already have this class in Add Remove Programs: Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1, Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2, Microsoft. NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, Microsoft. NET Framework 4 Client Profile.
    Is the problem, a missing software program or a corrupted file?  What is Microsoft. NET Framework?  I use selective with most of the disabled items in the services (except hide all Microsoft) and start more disabled under Startup.  Is there something that needs to be checked to activate a service or start to correct this error message?

    Check the settings of firewall for the HTTP port (80), HTTPS port (443) and FTP port (21).

    It is not recommended to keep Windows Firewall disabled on the computer.

    This would happen if the ports are not open in the Windows Firewall.

    I suggest that you open ports in Windows Firewall and check if it works.

    Windows mail was working fine until about 2: 30 EST 2011-12-14 and tried to send an email and got the above error msg.

    Check with your mail service provider to make sure that there is not an intermittent interruption of service.  If you have webmail capabilities, you can also check.  Otherwise, compact and repair the database (www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/) and if that doesn't help, remove your e-mail account, close and reopen WinMail and then add it back back.  Also check 3rd party program interference such as antivirus software (see www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3).

    This is actually not JavaScript, it's Java.  Despite the name, they are really very very different.

    Java itself can be dangerous, especially if it is not a trusted application.  It is my sincere recommendation that you do not continue.

    If you want anyway, you can go into your control panel, open the Java settings and set it to allow untrusted applications.

    You have the fonts installed in the system. This has not changed. (Having the police is not always enough, but it is certainly necessary).

  • I cannot download a .pdf file using Adobe Acrobat module 11.0.6.70. Disabling the add-on allows me to download the .pdf.

    I tried to download a .pdf file and open it with Adobe 11.0.6.70 module in FF 25.0.1 and received a message that the file has been damaged and cannot be repaired. I called the Technical Support of the site, and they asked that I have try with another browser download (ugh!) and the download worked. I returned and disabled the add-on Adobe in FF and the download worked in FF also. Don't know who developed the add-on, but one who did, left a bug in the process.

    Please upgrade to the latest version of Firefox by going on the subject of Firefox from the Firefox menu. If download hangs at the last minute (just before reaching 100%), the cause may be an antivirus software that tries to parse the file and during this process the instance of Firefox crashes. It can also occur when the download is corrupted. What I want to know is in the system requirements, which means "Firefox Extended Support Release".

    To resolve the issue, try disabling the analysis as follows:

    1. In the address bar, type Subject: config and press enter. The subject: config "this might void your warranty!" warning page may appear.
    2. Click on I'll be careful, I promise!, to continue on the subject: config page. A list of parameters must appear
    3. Filter the list by typing in the search bar at top. Enter scanWhenDone. Now you should find the browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone preference.
    4. Double-click this preference to set the value to false.
    5. Then, try to download something and see if it still crashes.
