Files BKF (backup utility) comes from the previous windows xp computer

Hi David Lado.

Welcome to the Microsoft answers community site.

You can restore a backup created on a previous version of Windows (the backup file will have a .bkf file name extension) by using Windows NT Backup Restore Utility. For more information on system requirements and how to download and run this program, go to the Microsoft Windows NT Backup Restore Utility website.

To run Windows NT Backup Restore utility, you need to turn on removable storage management.

To turn on removable storage management

1. open programs and features by clicking on the Start button , by clicking on the Control Panel, click programs, and then click programs and features.
2. in the left pane, click Windows turn features on or off. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. Select the check box next to removable storage management to enable the feature, and then click OK.

Let me know if it works. Good luck!

Hope this information is useful.

Thank you and best regards,

  • Windows cannot find any networks, but Ubuntu can! (X 32 Vista Home Premium)

I recently replaced a faulty laptop computer mother board with an identical model (only difference is a newer version of the BIOS). After restarting Windows (Vista Home Premium 32 bit) I can't find the networks wireless where I can see usually eight networks at least an unsecured connection, but now I get nothing.

I replaced the wireless card Atheros with an Intel Pro 3945ABG driver and installed the latest version and that I still get the same error "Windows cannot find any networks", I can get access to the internet via an Ethernet cable but I am unable to connect wirelessly. If I try to manually configure the wireless connection, I get "unexpected error occurred".

I started the system from a CD of Ubuntu to check that it was not a hardware problem. Wireless card perfectly, sees all the networks, connects and works very well.

  • The disk (with no key) installed Vista Home Premium, and the license key OEM is for... Home Basic!

    I recently did a clean install with the disc that came with my Dell XPS6400 (bought in the auction) local computer, which had only "Vista 32bits" written on it and no product key.  I thought I could use the key on the sticker on the underside of the computer OEM license, even if the 2 characters in the 3rd section were partially missing - they had to be one of the other four.  When OEM license was initially considered valid, I realized that I had not yet downloaded a service pack, but after that, he was still to come as being invalid!  Then, I found that the version of Vista that was on the disc was "Home Premium" and the OEM for "Home Basic" license key  Do I have to reinstall the whole system, drivers, etc., in order to establish the upgrade?  (Please say "NO", there is an easier way to do this!    Here's the MGADiag. -I hope it helps.  :-}

The product key on the bottom will work for what he says he is, Windows Home Basic Edition.

Reinstall the correct Systyem, Windows Home Edition basic operation to use this product key.

And Microsoft sells more than Vista.

To reinstall Vista Home Basic read this information.

You can contact your computer manufacturer and ask them to send you a set of recovery disks.

They should do this for a small fee.

And if you have never received a recovery disk when you bought, not that one 32-bit, vista, your computer must be on the hard drive to reinstall recovery Partition Vista to how you bought your computer, which may or may not work after the installation of the wrong edition.

The recovery process can be started by pressing a particular combination of the key or keys at startup. (Power on / start)

    Maybe it's F10, F11, Alt + F10, etc., depending on the manufacturer.

Ask them to the proper key sequence.

Some manufacturers have more available Vista recovery disks.

If this happens, you may need to try this instead:

You can also borrow and use a Microsoft Vista DVD, which contains the files for the different editions of Vista (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) must be installed. The product key on your computer / Laptop box determines what Edition is installed.

Other manufacturers recovery DVDs are should not be used for this purpose.

And you need to know the version of 'bit' for Vista, as 32-bit and 64-bit editions come on different DVDs

Here's how to do a clean install of Vista using a DVD of Vista from Microsoft:

"How to do a clean install and configure with a full Version of Vista '

    http://www.Vistax64.com/tutorials/117366-clean-install-full-version-Vista.html

And once the operating system is installed, go to your computer manufacturer's website and get the latest drivers for your particular model or laptop computer.

And phone Activation may be necessary when you use the above installation method.

  • Moving files from office with W98SE laptop with Vista Home Premium

    Hello
I am struggling to move files from my PC of antique desk whose memory tracks 512meg W98SE via a generic (freebie) stick to my laptop XPS from Dell. The memory stick works.
I installed a generic USB driver on the old PC, but not deleted my existing usb drivers. Still, the old pc isn't recognizing the memory stick.
I received a suggestion that i've got FAT16 on old pc so not recognize FAT32 usb key. If I run the utility to change the hard disk from fat16 to fat32 how to avoid the risk of losing valuable pictures of family etc?
The old PC has only a single read CD rom for backup on cd is not an option.
Assuming that this forum can provide a solution to save files to the drive c on the memory stick, my Vista laptop will be able to pick up the FAT32 files?
    Here's hoping. Thank you.

Best solution - pull the hard drive out of the old machine and put it in a USB external hard drive enclosure/adapter. Who join the new Vista machine and simply copy your files on. MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!

  • Erase any of my files if I switch from XP to Vista Home Premium?

I have Windows XP and Im wondering if I install Windows Vista to Windows XP will be my files deleted because I don't want my files to be clear they are very important especially my Norton. So, I just want to know it will clear or not

    Hello.

Your files are deleted or not actually depend on how you choose to install/upgrade to Windows Vista.

Basically, you have two choices: upgrade or New Installation.

-The upgrade allows you to raise simply for the windows you want without affecting your partitions of current facilities and documents.

-New Installation, on the other hand, your old installation OS completely wipes and puts the new operating system on it. Or allows the original copy on a new disk or partition must be installed.

Since you want to keep your files in the New Installation is out of the question. But to do an upgrade, it depends on what OS your market now and what operating system you want to upgrade to.

What edition of Windows XP you are running (i.e. XP, Professional, Media Center)? And what version of 'little', it's [that is 32 - bit, 64-bit]?

If you want to display a chart that shows you whether it is possible to install any upgrade or clean go here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Upgrading-from-Windows-XP-to-Windows-Vista

MMC cannot open the file c:\WINDOWS\system32\dfrg.msc.
This file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC.

Then what should I do? I looked around and I still have the file on the computer but I can't open it to all.  My computer needs to defragment very badly.  It there a way to get a new file or program? Or can I replace this question?

Make sure that all required files for installation aare available and restart the installation. Error code: 0x8007000D, SHOULD ALL BE ON THE DISCALREADY?

    Hi JRCLNSIN100,

    Welcome to Microsoft Answers Forums.

We would like to get some more information from you to help solve your problem. You better, please answer the following questions.

    ·         What is the disk you use to reinstall?

    ·         Is this a recovery or reinstalling the disc you are using?

    ·         When exactly do you get this error message?

    ·         What is the edition of Windows Vista, you try to install?

    ·         How old is the drive that you are using?

    ·         How are you starting the installation process?

After researching the error 0x8007000D code is essentially due to file corruption and a problem with the drive itself.

First check if you have scratches or dust on the disc and clean the surface and try again.

To check if the disk is wrong, you will need to copy the contents of the DVD to the hard drive and try to install using that.

To perform a flat installation of Windows Vista, follow these steps.

Note The hard disk must have at least 3 GB of free space on the disk for the Windows Vista installation files. The hard disk must have at least 15 GB of additional disk space to install Windows Vista. For more information about system requirements for Windows Vista, see the Microsoft Web site at the following address:

    http://www.Microsoft.com/Windows/products/windowsvista/editions/SystemRequirements.mspx

    1. Insert the Windows Vista installation disc.
    2. Start Windows Explorer.
    3. In Windows Explorer, click to select the drive for the Windows Vista installation disc.
    4. On the Edit menu, click select all.
    5. On the Edit menu, click copy.
    6. Click to select the hard disk you want to contain the flat installation files.
    7. On the file menu, point to new, click the folder, type Windows Vista Setupand then press ENTER.
    8. Double-click the Windows Vista Setup program, and then click Paste on the Edit menu.
    9. Double-click Setup.exe, and then follow the instructions that appear.

See the link below for more information on flat installation.

How to perform a flat installation of Windows Vista

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/928902

This problem can also occur if the firmware of the DVD drive is defective or obsolete.

If the step above does not resolve the question suggests that you install the latest drivers for the DVD player on the computer.

For more information please visit the link below.

I am running Windows XP, MS office Outlook 2007

Is it a link in an e-mail message in Outlook? This problem arises from time to time.

While Firefox can usually set himself as the proper application to open the URL, you click in other programs, settings are sometimes blur or do not take. This article has tips to solve this problem: setting Firefox as the default browser does not work - what to do. Anything there help?

If the problem persists, is there something special about how you start Firefox? For example, you have this launch in a security 'sandbox' or virtual machine? You have all the command-line options set to allow several simultaneous sessions of Firefox, or call the Profile Manager? If none of this sounds familiar to you, the answer is probably not.

  • "Extraction failure: cannot open output file" error message when installing new drivers

Hello, I am trying to install new drivers for my HP Photosmart C4385 printer.  I downloaded the complete drivers of features for Windows XP 32-bit, and when I start to install (extract), I get the error message:

    Extraction failed

    Cannot open output file

And the process ends.  He arrived at about 85% extraction every time.

No idea why?  I called HP, but no longer under warranty they wanted money, which I think as absolutely ridiculous - not even give me basic support?  Poor, poor customer service.

    Hi GIJeff12,

    Temporarily disable any AntiVirus/Antispyware software.

Cut the installer on your desktop then click on the Start Menu, click computer, double-click on the C: drive and paste the installler here.  Now try a right click on the installer for your printer, choose 7-Zip and choose Extract the files, and then click Ok.  If the installation program extracts now correctly, follow these steps.  If it does not extract, let me know.

Disconnect your printer from the PC.  Restart your PC.

Open the newly extracted folder and double-click the setup application to start the installation (the installation application will probably have the same icon as the original installation software that you downloaded).  Connect the printer to your computer when you are asked.

If it was a success, re - enable your security software.

    Best wishes
